Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glassy and ductile plastics require toughening to improve their range of usefulness, particularly for engineering applications. Rubber-modified, toughened thermoplastics are already in widespread use. This review sets out to introduce this field and describe the state-of-the-art. The introduction begins with the history of rubber-modified thermoplastics, with particular reference to the development of high impact polystyrene (HIPS). Methods of preparation are discussed including in-situ polymerisation, emulsion polymerisation, melt blending and reactive compatibilisation. The matrix plastic is often incompatible with the rubber modifier, leading to poor interfacial adhesion. This problem has been addressed in different ways. Reactive compatibilisation involves the preparation of compatibilised materials such as maleated elastomers, which can react with the amide end groups of a polyamide matrix, forming miscible copolymers at the interface between the phases. Alternatively a third polymeric component may be added to the blend to form a domain at the interface. The morphology of the dispersed rubber phase can be controlled by a variety of means, and the effect of these changes on the toughening process are reviewed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Thermoplastic Elastomers, Second Edition presents a comprehensive working knowledge of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), providing an essential introduction for those learning the basics, but also detailed engineering data and best practice guidance for those already involved in polymerization, processing, and part manufacture. TPEs use short, cost-effective production cycles, with reduced energy consumption compared to other polymers, and are used in a range of industries including automotive, medical, construction and many more. This handbook provides all the practical information engineers need to successfully utilize this material group in their products, as well as the required knowledge to thoroughly ground themselves in the fundamental chemistry of TPEs. The data tables included in this book assist engineers and scientists in both selecting and processing the materials for a given product or application. In the second edition of this handbook, all chapters have been reviewed and updated. New polymers and applications have been added — particularly in the growing automotive and medical fields — and changes in chemistry and processing technology are covered. - Provides essential knowledge of the chemistry, processing, properties, and applications for both new and established technical professionals in any industry utilizing TPEs - Datasheets provide "at-a-glance" processing and technical information for a wide range of commercial TPEs and compounds, saving readers the need to contact suppliers - Includes data on additional materials and applications, particularly in automotive and medical industries

The Freedonia Group has forecast that demand will expand by 6.4% per year to around 2.15 million tons in 2006. There is potential for these new, exciting materials to expand into the much larger thermoset rubber markets. This review includes comparisons between the two material types. There are three major types of TPE: block copolymers, rubber/plastic blends and dynamically vulcanised rubber/plastic alloys known as thermoplastic vulcanisates. The chemistry of these materials and how.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), commonly known as thermoplastic rubbers, are a category of copolymers having thermoplastic and elastomeric characteristics. A TPE is a rubbery material with properties very close to those of conventional vulcanized rubber at normal conditions. It can be processed in a molten state even at elevated temperatures. TPEs show advantages typical of both rubbery materials and plastic materials. TPEs are a class of polymers bridging between the service properties of elastomers and the processing properties of thermoplastics. Nowadays, the best use of thermoplastics is in the field of biomedical applications, starting from artificial skin to many of the artificial human body parts. Apart from these, thermoplastic elastomers are being used for drug encapsulation purposes, and since they are biocompatible in many cases, their scope of applications has been broadened in the biotechnological field as well. The present book highlights many biological and biomedical applications of TPEs from which the broader area readers will benefit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since publication of the first edition of this Handbook, the usage of thenno plastic elastomers (TPEs) has doubled, with a compounded annual growth rate of approximately 9 percent. This second edition summarizes and documents the technological and commercial progress that has given rise to this phenomenal rate of growth. Over the past decade, numerous suppliers and users of ther moplastic elastomers have entered the field, and some have retired from it, a process that almost certainly will continue. This Handbook is intended to serve the broad spectrum of professionals ac tively engaged in the field of thennoplastic elastomers, which has seen a growth rate four to six times that of the rubber and plastics industries. As TPEs embrace both rubber and plastics technology, this book will be useful to rubber and plastics technologists with a broad variety of specific interests. This edition emphasizes commercial practice and practical application rather than research activity. Technology and innovation are stressed, with polymer science functioning as a basis for understanding and communication. We have focused on those TPEs that we consider to be of significant commercial impor tance-the ones now used in the fabrication of useful articles, or which probably will be so used in the foreseeable future.
