Book Synopsis EU Enlargement, Region Building and Shifting Borders of Inclusion and Exclusion by : James Wesley Scott
Download or read book EU Enlargement, Region Building and Shifting Borders of Inclusion and Exclusion written by James Wesley Scott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2004 entry of 10 Central and Eastern European countries, along with Malta and Cyprus, into the EU has caused a huge shift in the EU's external boundaries. The socio-economic and political transformations that this shift has caused not only suggest new regional development opportunities, but also many potential problems and tensions. While the EU insists that enlargement will not signify 'new divisions', processes of inclusion and exclusion and the imposition of visa restrictions on non-EU citizens could pose obstacles to co-operation, conjuring fears of an emerging 'fortress Europe' that effectively divides the continent. Illustrated with case studies from Central and Eastern European border areas, this book examines capacities for region building across national borders in within the context of EU enlargement, synthesizing the various insights provided by local information and suggesting ways forward for the future development of the EU's 'Wider Europe' strategy.
Download or read book Europe on the Move written by A. T. Lane and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2005 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by a multinational group of authors examines the political, social and economic consequences of the most recent enlargement of the European Union. It does not confine itself to a discussion of the impact on the new member states but also considers the likely effects of this enlargement on the EU itself. These effects include not only the familiar need for new modes of governance but also involve other changes resulting from a process of what has been called mutual learning. These essays analyse various aspects of this process starting with the Constitutional Convention. Sometimes the focus is on the impact on the new members, sometimes on the changes likely to occur in the EU and its older members as a result of this enlargement. The emphasis on change is encapsulated in the book's title, 'Europe on the Move'.
Book Synopsis European Governance After Nice by : Hiroyi Akiba
Download or read book European Governance After Nice written by Hiroyi Akiba and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the impact of institutional reform implemented by the Nice Treaty on European Governance? What should be done to enhance democratic legitimacy in the EU? This book provides an up-to-date guide to understanding the European Union as an institution. Globalisation has led to enormous changes in the international environment which, in turn, have demanded institutional reform of the European Union in the form of the Nice Treaty. European Governance After Nice scrutinises how, and to what extent, the treaty will contribute to the solution of existing problems, examining both its positive effects and its limitations and examines the reforms within the EU through political science, law and economics, in order to express the full extent of the different effects of the Nice Treaty on non-member as well as member countries. The contributors suggest that the threat of varying exchange rates in the future, when the Treaty has an expansionary effect on economic scale, will lead to a deepening interdependence between the excluded countries.

Book Synopsis Poland, Germany and State Power in Post-Cold War Europe by : Stefan Szwed
Download or read book Poland, Germany and State Power in Post-Cold War Europe written by Stefan Szwed and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-29 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the post-Cold War Polish-German relationship and the puzzling rise of foreign and security policy differences between the two states during the 2000s. Through an investigation of four policy issues – NATO’s out-of-area mandate, European Constitution and the division of voting power in the Council, relations with Russia and the eastern neighbours, as well as EU energy policy – the author identifies the roots of their conflict in a structure of material, spatial and temporal asymmetries. Rather than treat them as currency, however, he explores the less conspicuous ways in which power is exercised and structure matters inside a community governed by shared rules and norms. In pursuing its research question, theoretical work, historical reconstructions and empirical analyses, the book combines security studies, transatlantic relations, European integration, and Polish and German politics with general theorizing and conceptual grounding in international relations and political science.
