Book excerpt: St James's Palace was built by Henry VIII in the 1530s on the site of a former leper hospital, and as such is one of London's oldest royal palaces and host to some of the most extraordinary events in British history. It was at St James's Palace that Mary Tudor signed the treaty surrendering Calais; where Elizabeth I held her Councils of War at the time of the Spanish Armada and where Charles I spent his final night before his execution. Today, the Palace remains the official seat of the monarchy - 'the Court of St James' - playing host to many state and ceremonial occasions. This delightful book is filled with quality reproductions to illustrate the witty and informative text, bringing to life the history of the royal palace. Sir Kenneth Scott, an author very familiar with the workings of a royal household, gives an illuminating and fascinating account of the history of St James's Palace, which is the only one of the Royal Palaces not open to the public. AUTHOR: After school and university in Edinburgh, Sir Kenneth Scott joined the Diplomatic Service and served in a variety of posts including Moscow, Bonn, Washington and Brussels before being appointed Ambassador in Yugoslavia in 1982. From 1985 to 1996 he was one of the Private Secretaires to The Queen, and during most of that time he lived in an apartment in St. James' Palace. In 1996, after retirement from the Royal Household, he spent nine months in Sarajevo as Chairman of the Provisional Election Commission which organised the first democratic elections in Bosnia after the war. He now lives in Edinburgh. 150 colour illustrations

Book excerpt: The first modern history of St James's Palace, shedding light on a remarkable building at the heart of the history of the British monarchy that remains by far the least known of the royal residences In this first modern history of St James's Palace, the authors shed new light on a remarkable building that, despite serving as the official residence of the British monarchy from 1698 to 1837, is by far the least known of the royal residences. The book explores the role of the palace as home to the heir to the throne before 1714, its impact on the development of London and the West end during the late Stuart period, and how, following the fire at the palace of Whitehall, St James's became the principal seat of the British monarchy in 1698. The arrangement and display of the paintings and furnishings making up the Royal Collection at St James's is chronicled as the book follows the fortunes of the palace through the Victorian and Edwardian periods up to the present day. Specially commissioned maps, phased plans, and digital reconstructions of the palace at key moments in its development accompany a rich array of historical drawings, watercolors, photographs, and plans. The book includes a foreword by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. Published in association with Royal Collection Trust

Book excerpt: For about a century and a half after they arrived from England, America's first permanent colonists considered themselves to be English. They were proud of their heritage and loyal to their country. England's royal family truly was the royal family of America--until the era of the American Revolution, when the colonies fought for their independence from England and its rulers. Elizabeth I, James I, Charles I, Charles II, James II, William III and Mary II, Anne, George I, George II, and George III--the English royals who were also the royals of early America--are all covered in this work. It begins with Queen Elizabeth I, as it was during her rule that Sir Walter Ralegh established his settlements in America, and ends with King George III, as it was during his rule that the American Revolution began. A biographical sketch is provided for each royal and his or her spouse and legitimate children. Brief mention is made of mistresses and illegitimate children.

He quickly won the affection of the people, and though his informal manners drew criticism from the court, he enjoyed the company of intelligent men and women. A friend of Pope and Dryden, he became the most important royal patron of the arts since Charles I. Many of his acquisitions of paintings and silverware enhance the Royal Collection today.

Book excerpt: Sixteen leading scholars explore the richness of King James's work from a variety of perspectives, and in so doing seek to establish monarchic writing as an important genre in its own right. Best known for his landmark version of the Protestant Bible, James VI (1566-1625) of Scotland, who succeeded Elizabeth I to the English throne, was truly a monarch of the word. From religious prose and verse to political treatises and social works to love poems and witty doggerel, James used writing and the print media to inspire his subjects, govern them, keep his enemies at bay, and even examine his own authority. Until now, the full span of James's work has received little critical attention by political and literary historians. In Royal Subjects, sixteen leading scholars explore the richness of his oeuvre from a variety of perspectives, and in so doing seek to establish monarchic writing as an important genre in its own right. Through its unprecedented look at monarchic writing, Royal Subjects not only enriches our understanding of the reign of James VI and I but also offers fruitful suggestions for approaches to other Renaissance texts and other periods.
