Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power Without Responsibility is a classic introduction to the history, sociology, theory and politics of the media in Britain. It is an essential guide, both for students and teachers of media and communication studies, and for all those involved in the production and consumption of the media. The new edition has been substantially revised to bring it right up-to-date with developments in the media industry, new media technologies and changes in the political and academic debates surrounding media policy. In this new edition, the authors consider: * whether we are on the threshold of a new communications revolution * the role of global media empires * the rise of video, cable and satellite * the global information society and contradictions in media policy * the BBC and broadcasting at the end of the 1990s * the evolving relationship of the press and the Conservative party. Assessing the press and broadcasting at a time of radical change, the authors suggest a manifesto for media reform.

Book excerpt: British newspapers -- The Times, The Guardian, Daily Telegraph, and Financial Times -- have long been considered among the best in the world, and the BBC has become the world's most venerated television and radio organization. In this book Jeremy Tunstall, author of The Media are American, surveys British media since 1945, including television, radio, films, newspapers, and magazines, with the purpose of studying how they operate and what the future holds for them. In the course of the book he discusses such issues as the relationship of politics to the media, media audiences, media biases, control of the media by conglomerates, and policies for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 Michael Mitterauer-Prize for best monograph The Peasant Production of Opium in Nineteenth-Century India is a pioneering work about the more than one million peasants who produced opium for the colonial state in nineteenth-century India. Based on a profound empirical analysis, Rolf Bauer not only shows that the peasants cultivated poppy against a substantial loss but he also reveals how they were coerced into the production of this drug. By dissecting the economic and social power relations on a local level, this study explains how a triangle of debt, the colonial state’s power and social dependencies in the village formed the coercive mechanisms that transformed the peasants into opium producers. The result is a book that adds to our understanding of peasant economies in a colonial context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A couple of decades after Margaret Thatcher managed to radically transform the rules of industrial relations in Britain, there has been a great deal of debate, comment and analysis by a wide range of commentators with various ideological persuasions. Thatcherism has, therefore, become an infamous concept in the study of modern British politics. This book re-examines one of the most controversial features of that era, the relationship between the media (in particular the press), the Prime Minister and the trades unions in the 1980s. The book is based on the assumption that Thatcher's policies were supported by the most partisan press industry to date. This assumption is empirically substantiated with the aid of a comprehensive research program. This research compares the editorials of the national press in the 1970s to provide a more in-depth understanding of the differential outlook of the press to the miners and their strikes. Through an added qualitative scrutiny of the role of Murdoch's newspapers in three successive general elections involving Thatcher, the book argues that the relationship between Thatcher and Murdoch had a deep impact not only upon the press but on British society as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative book, C. Edwin Baker argues that print advertising seriously distorts the flow of news by creating a powerfully corrupting incentive: the more newspapers depend financially on advertising, the more they favor the interests of advertisers over those of readers. Advertising induces newspapers to compete for a maximum audience with blandly "objective" information, resulting in reduced differentiation among papers and the eventual collapse of competition among dailies. This book was released on 2016-11-04 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the ever-present challenges of patient care at the forefront of medical knowledge. Syphilis and gonorrhoea played upon the public imagination in Victorian and Edwardian England, inspiring fascination and fear. Seemingly inextricable from the other great 'social evil', prostitution, these diseases represented contamination, both physical and moral. They infiltrated respectable homes and brought terrible suffering and stigma to those afflicted. Medicine, Knowledge and Venereal Diseases takes us back to an age before penicillin and the NHS, when developments in pathology, symptomology and aetiology were transforming clinical practice. This is the first book to examine systematically how doctors, nurses and midwives grappled with new ideas and laboratory-based technologies in their fight against venereal diseases in voluntary hospitals, general practice and Poor Law institutions. It opens up new perspectives on what made competent and safe medical professionals; how these standards changed over time; and how changing attitudes and expectations affected the medical authority and autonomy of different professional groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together published papers on key themes which book historians have identified as of particular significance in the history of twentieth-century publishing. It reprints some of the best comparative perspectives and most insightful and innovatively presented scholarship on publishing and book history from such figures as Philip Altbach, Lewis Coser, James Curran, Elizabeth Long, Laura Miller, Angus Phillips, Janice Radway, Jonathan Rose, Shafquat Towheed, Catherine Turner, Jay Satterfield, Clare Squires, Eva Hemmungs Wirtén. It is arranged into six sections which examine the internationalisation of publishing businesses, changing notions of authorship, innovation in the design and marketing of books, the specific effects of globalisation on creative property and the book in a multimedia marketplace. Twentieth-century book history attracts an audience beyond the traditional disciplines of librarianship, bibliography, history and literary studies. It will appeal to publishing educators, editors, publishers, booksellers, as well as academics with an interest in media and popular culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social scientists have proposed several different models for the relationship between social science theory, empirical social research and the actual making of public social policy. This book, first published in 1980, seeks to provide a critical analysis of the impact of research on policy through the detailed examination of the part which research played in the work of Royal Commissions of Inquiry, the bodies set up by government to consider, gather evidence on, report and make recommendations about specific policy areas. This titles varied and stimulating chapters will serve to shed considerable light, not all of it positive, upon the potential contribution of the social sciences to the practice of government. This book will be of interest to students of the social sciences, particularly sociology and politics.
