Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky Country is a lively tour of the state's indigenous music, from the days of string bands through hillbilly, western swing, gospel, bluegrass, and honkey-tonk to through the Nashville Sound and beyond. Through personal interviews with many of the living legends of Kentucky music, Charles K. Wolfe illuminates a fascinating and important area of American culture. The list of country music stars who hail from Kentucky is a long and glittering one. Red Foley, Bill Monroe, Loretta Lynn, Tom T. Hall, the Judds, Dwight Yaokum, Billy Ray Cyrus, Ricky Skaggs, John Michael Montgomery, and Keith Whitely—all these and many others have called Kentucky home. Kentucky Country is the story of these stars and dozens more. It is also the story of many Kentucky musicians whose contributions have been little known or appreciated, and of those collectors, promoters, and entrepreneurs who have worked behind the scenes to bring Kentucky music to national attention.

Book excerpt: This the tenth in the series of Kaffe Fassett's highly successful patchwork and quilting books from Rowan, celebrating a decade of books from one of the foremost colourists of his time. It offers 20 new quilt designs that embrace a strong floral theme and use Kaffe's new fabrics. Photographed at Great Dixter, the 15th century English manor house home of Christopher Lloyd, the well known pioneering gardener and writer, is the sumptuous backdrop for the glorious collection of new quilt designs from Kaffe and his chosen designers. Kaffe's new printed fabrics, Brocade Floral and Pinking Flower, which are lush florals and Targets and Jungle Stripe, which are dramatic large scale designs. Spot and Aboriginal Dot are small-scale designs that quilters find particularly useful. Colours range from the rich and sumptuous to delicate pastels. New woven stripes from India come in rich earthy shades and are a welcome addition to the range. Country Garden Quilts is constructed rather like a cookery book with a sumptuous photo of the finished project, an ingredients list and written instructions illustrated with coloured diagrams, plus a 'flat shot' photo and all the templates needed.

Book excerpt: During the quarter of a century before the thirteen colonies became a nation, the northwest quadrant of North Carolina had just begun to attract permanent settlers. This seemingly primitive area may not appear to be a likely source for attractive pottery and ornate silverware and furniture, much less for an audience to appreciate these refinements. Yet such crafts were not confined to urban centers, and artisans, like other colonists, were striving to create better lives for themselves as well as to practice their trades. As Johanna Miller Lewis shows in this pivotal study of colonial history and material culture, the growing population of Rowan County required not only blacksmiths, saddlers, and tanners but also a great variety of skilled craftsmen to help raise the standard of living. Rowan County's rapid expansion was in part the result of the planned settlements of the Moravian Church. Because the Moravians maintained careful records, historians have previously credited church artisans with greater skill and more economic awareness than non-church craftsmen. Through meticulous attention to court and private records, deeds, wills, and other sources, Lewis reveals the Moravian failure to keep up with the pace of development occurring elsewhere in the county. Challenging the traditional belief that southern backcountry life was primitive, Lewis shows that many artisans held public office and wielded power in the public sphere. She also examines women weavers and spinsters as an integral part of the population. All artisans—Moravian and non-Moravian, male and female—helped the local market economy expand to include coastal and trans-Atlantic trade. Lewis's book contributes meaningfully to the debate over self-sufficiency and capitalism in rural America.

Book excerpt: " Among the darkest corners of Kentucky's past are the grisly feuds that tore apart the hills of Eastern Kentucky from the late nineteenth century until well into the twentieth. Now, from the tangled threads of conflicting testimony, John Ed Pearce, Kentucky's best known journalist, weaves engrossing accounts of six of the most notorior accounts to uncover what really happened and why. His story of those days of darkness brings to light new evidence, questions commonly held beliefs about the feuds, and us and long-running feuds -- those in Breathitt, Clay Harlan, Perry, Pike, and Rowan counties. What caused the feuds that left Kentucky with its lingering reputation for violence? Who were the feudists, and what forces -- social, political, financial -- hurled them at each other? Did Big Jim Howard really kill Governor William Goebel? Did Joe Eversole die trying to protect small mountain landowners from ruthless Eastern mineral exploiters? Did the Hatfield-McCoy fight start over a hog? For years, Pearce has interviewed descendants of feuding families and examined skimpy court records and often fictional newspapeputs to rest some of the more popular legends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "America the Great" is the result of five years' research and writing that began in late 2009 in response to the contemporary American "tea party" movement and criticisms that the movement's participants did not know the history and theory of the original 1773 Boston Tea Party from which the modern movement takes its name. The extensive library of original books, newspapers, magazines, etc., now available (primarily via "google books") to anyone over the Internet, means that researchers have available to them the university libraries of the world. The availability of accurate original documents made it possible to expand the original scope of research into other historical events, and into other countries (primarily Great Britain), and enabled the work to develop into a more general examination of theories of human dignity, and of the differing conception of government that arises depending on the conception of human dignity that is characteristic of the people that is creating that government.

The will book abstracts comprise the bulk of both volumes. They are arranged chronologically, according to the date of the court session, and include not only wills but also estate records, inventories, accounts, and so on. In addition to the abstracts of the will books, the compilers have made the following supporting records available to Caswell County researchers: guardian accounts, mortality schedules, powers of attorney, and tax lists.
