Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerry White's London in the Twentieth Century, Winner of the Wolfson Prize, is a masterful account of the city’s most tumultuous century by its leading expert. In 1901 no other city matched London in size, wealth and grandeur. Yet it was also a city where poverty and disease were rife. For its inhabitants, such contradictions and diversity were the defining experience of the next century of dazzling change. In the worlds of work and popular culture, politics and crime, through war, immigration and sexual revolution, Jerry White’s richly detailed and captivating history shows how the city shaped their lives and how it in turn was shaped by them.

Book Synopsis Writing the 1926 General Strike by : Charles Ferrall
Download or read book Writing the 1926 General Strike written by Charles Ferrall and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-19 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Ferrall and Dougal McNeill's book analyses the vast literary response to the 1926 General Strike. The Strike not only drew writers into political action but inspired literature that served to shape twentieth-century British views of class, culture and politics. While major figures active at the time wrote on or responded to this crucial moment, this is the first volume to address their respective works. Ferrall and McNeill show how novels then in progress, such as Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse and D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover, were affected by the Strike, as well as the ways in which it has been remembered from the 1930s to the present. Their study sheds new light on the relationship between politics and literature of the modernist era.

Book Synopsis The Collected Works of D.W. Winnicott by : Donald Woods Winnicott
Download or read book The Collected Works of D.W. Winnicott written by Donald Woods Winnicott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Woods Winnicott (1896-1971) was one of Britain's leading psychoanalysts and pediatricians. The author of some of the most enduring theories of the child and of child analysis, he coined terms such as the "good enough mother" and the "transitional object" (known to most as the security blanket). Winnicott's work is still used today by child and family therapists, social workers, teachers, and psychologists, and his papers and clinical observations are routinely studied by trainees in psychiatry and clinical psychology. Beyond the expected audiences of psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists, Winnicott also wrote for parents, teachers, social workers, childcare specialists, pediatricians, psychologists, art and play therapists, and others in the field of child development. Now, for the first time, virtually all of Winnicott's writings are presented chronologically in 12 volumes, edited and annotated by leading Winnicott scholars. The Collected Works of D. W. Winnicott brings together letters, clinical case reports, child consultations, psychoanalytic articles, and papers, including previously unpublished works on topics of continuing interest to contemporary readers (such as delinquency, antisocial behavior, corporal punishment, and child care). The Collected Works begins with an authoritative General Introduction by editors Lesley Caldwell and Helen Taylor Robinson, while each of the volumes features an original introduction examining that volume's major themes and written by an international Winnicott scholar and psychoanalyst. Throughout The Collected Works, editorial annotations provide historical context and background information of scholarly and clinical value. The final volume contains new and illuminating appendices, comprehensive bibliographies of Winnicott's publications and letters, documentation of his lectures and broadcasts, and a selection of his drawings. This extraordinary publication will be an essential resource for Winnicott admirers the world over and those interested in the history and origins of the fields of child development and psychoanalysis.
Download or read book The Glass Wall written by Max Egremont and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max Egremont, author of Some Desperate Glory, tells stories from the "Glass Wall" between Europe and Asia. Few countries have suffered more from the convulsions and bloodshed of twentieth-century Europe than those in the eastern Baltic region. Caught between the giants of Germany and Russia, on a route across which armies surged or retreated, small nations like Latvia and Estonia were for centuries the subjects of conquests and domination as foreign colonizers claimed control of the territory and its inhabitants, along with their religion, government, and culture. The Glass Wall features an extraordinary cast of characters—contemporary and historical, foreign and indigenous—who have lived and fought in the Baltic, western Europe’s easternmost stronghold. Too often the destiny of this region has seemed to be to serve as the front line in other people’s wars. By telling the stories of warriors and victims, of philosophers and barons, of poets and artists, of rebels and emperors, and of others who lived through years of turmoil and violence, Max Egremont sets forth a brilliant account of a long-overlooked region, on a frontier whose limits may still be in doubt.
Book Synopsis Christmas and the British: A Modern History by : Martin Johnes
Download or read book Christmas and the British: A Modern History written by Martin Johnes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern Christmas was made by the Victorians and rooted in their belief in commerce, family and religion. Their rituals and traditions persist to the present day but the festival has also been changed by growing affluence, shifting family structures, greater expectations of happiness and material comfort, technological developments and falling religious belief. Christmas became a battleground for arguments over consumerism, holiday entitlements, social obligations, communal behaviour and the influence of church, state and media. Even in private, it encouraged reflection on social change and the march of time. Amongst those unhappy at the state of the world or their own lives, Christmas could induce much cynicism and even loathing but for a quieter majority it was a happy time, a moment of a joy in a sometimes difficult world that made the festival more than just an integral feature of the calendar: Christmas was one of British culture's emotional high points. Moreover, it was also a testimony to the enduring importance of family, shared values and a common culture in the UK. Martin Johnes shows how Christmas and its traditions have been lived, adapted and thought about in Britain since 1914. Christmas and the British is about the festival's social, cultural and economic functions, and its often forgotten status as both the most unusual and important day of the year
Book Synopsis Sherman's Wife by : Julia Camoys Stonor
Download or read book Sherman's Wife written by Julia Camoys Stonor and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherman's Wife is Julia Camoys Stonor's blackly humorous childhood memoir. Her mother, Jeanne, came from an impecunious Catholic aristocratic family and careened her way through the bedrooms of Mayfair, Madrid and Rhode Island. Her father was Sherman, the half-American 6th Baron Camoys whom Jeanne effectively blackmailed into marriage. Jeanne insisted that she and Sherman spend their honeymoon with one of her lovers, Hitler's foreign minister, Joachim von Ribbentrop. Once installed at the Stonor Park estate, Jeanne set about acquiring money and power through any means possible, including but not limited to theft, sexual blackmail, and murder. In this frank and unflinching portrait of English upper class life in the 1940s, Julia Camoys Stonor manages to evoke Mommie Dearest and Brideshead Revisited in equal measure.

Book Synopsis George Augustus Sala and the Nineteenth-Century Periodical Press by : Peter Blake
Download or read book George Augustus Sala and the Nineteenth-Century Periodical Press written by Peter Blake and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his study of the journalist George Augustus Sala, Peter Blake discusses the way Sala’s personal style, along with his innovations in form, influenced the New Journalism at the end of the nineteenth century. Blake places Sala at the centre of nineteenth-century newspapers and periodicals and examines his prolific contributions to newspapers and periodicals in the context of contemporary debates and issues surrounding his work. Sala’s journalistic style, Blake argues, was a product of the very different mediums in which he worked, whether it was the visual arts, bohemian journalism, novels, pornographic plays, or travel writing. Harkening back to a time when journalism and fiction were closely connected, Blake’s book not only expands our understanding of one of the more prominent and interesting journalists and personalities of the nineteenth century, but also sheds light on prominent nineteenth-century writers and artists such as Charles Dickens, Mathew Arnold, William Powell Frith, Henry Vizetelly, and Mary Elizabeth Braddon.
Book Synopsis Representing the Male by : John Perrott Jenkins
Download or read book Representing the Male written by John Perrott Jenkins and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book subjects male characters in six south Wales novels written between 1936 and 2014 to detailed, gendered reading. It argues that the novels critique the form of masculine hegemony propagated by structural patriarchy serving the material demands of industrial capitalism. Each depicts characters confined to a limited repertoire of culturally endorsed behaviourial norms – such as displays of power, decisiveness and self-control – which prohibit the expression and cultivation of the subjective self. Within the social organisation of industrial capitalism, the working-class characters are, in practice, reduced to dispensable functionaries at work while, in theory, they are accorded the status of patriarchally-sanctioned principals at home. Ideologically subservient and ‘feminised’ in one context, they are ideologically dominant and ‘masculinised’ in another. As they negotiate, resist or strive to reconcile the irreconcilable demands of such gendered practices, recurring patterns of exclusion, inadequacy and mental instability are made evident in their representation.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Research on Educational Leadership for Equity and Diversity by : Linda C. Tillman
Download or read book Handbook of Research on Educational Leadership for Equity and Diversity written by Linda C. Tillman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of diversity within U.S. schooling and the heightened attention to the lack of equity in student achievement, school completion, and postsecondary attendance has made equity and diversity two of the principle issues in education, educational leadership, and educational leadership research. The Handbook of Research on Educational Leadership for Equity and Diversity is the first research-based handbook that comprehensively addresses the broad diversity in U.S. schools by race, ethnicity, culture, language, gender, disability, sexual identity, and class. The Handbook both highly values the critically important strengths and assets that diversity brings to the United States and its schools, yet at the same time candidly critiques the destructive deficit thinking, biases, and prejudices that undermine school success for many groups of students. Well-known chapter authors explore diversity and related inequities in schools and the achievement problems these issues present to school leaders. Each chapter reviews theoretical and empirical evidence of these inequities and provides research-based recommendations for practice and for future research. Celebrating the broad diversity in U.S. schools, the Handbook of Research on Educational Leadership for Equity and Diversity critiques the inequities connected to that diversity, and provides evidence-based practices to promote student success for all children.
