Book excerpt: Results of a High-speed 10-stage axial-flow compressor test involving overall compressor and individual stage performance while stalling and operating in quasi-steady rotating stall are described. Test procedures and data acquisition methods used to obtain the dynamic stalling and quasi-steady in-stall data are explained. Unstalled and in-stall data obtained from the compressor operating at five different shaft speeds and one off-schedule variable vane condition are presented. The effects of compressor speed and variable geometry on overall compressor in-stall pressure rise and hysteresis extent are illustrated through the use of quasi-steady stage temperature and pressure rise characteristics. The results indicate that individual stage performance during overall compressor. Time resolved install data acquired at two different shaft speeds are presented in support of the notion that stage operation varies significantly from entrance to exit of the compressor. Both time-averaged and time-resolved individual stage results suggest that stage matching is important, not only for unstalled performance but also for in-stall performance and recoverability from stall. The measured high-speed 10-stage test compressor individual stage pressure and temperature characteristics were input into a stage-by-stage dynamic compressor performance model. The analytical model had been previously validated for the prediction of low-speed compressor stalling and in-stall performance. (SDW).

Book Synopsis Compressor Surge and Stall by : R. C. Pampreen

Book excerpt: High efficiency axial and centrifugal compressors are important in fields as diverse as aircraft engines, superchargers and turbochargers, process and refrigeration compressors. Compressors must achieve high efficiency in blade rows in diffusing flow fields. Of equal and sometimes greater importance is the range os stable operation of the compressor. Blade row stall characteristics determine the limit os stable operation. Blading can stall uniformly with symmetric flow breakdown or asymmetrically in rotating stall, wich propagates around the periphery of the blade row. Depending on aerodynamic conditions, surge may occur instead of, in concert with, or subsequent to blade row stall. The transient breakdown and recovery of aerodynamic loading not only limits compressor performance but also leads to mechanical failures caused by the vibrational loads imposed on the blades. There is no need to know what initiates these performance limits so that surge and stall margins can be optimized and control strategies can be planned. the first step toward understanding is to be knowledgeable about he physical processes occurring during surge and stall. This will permit the designer to anticipate variable geometry needs such as variable inlet guide vanes, variable statuors, and bleed port strategies. Theoritical treatment is far from being well established, however, there are many approaches discussed in the literature. This book is a unique reference to the subject matter. Physical descriptions of the phenomena are given, test results are presented, and analytical studies are discussed. There has been much written about the experimental investigations and theoretical treatments related to surge and stall. To assist those who would pursue advancements in furthering ou knowledge of surge and stall, it seemed appropriate to have a resource that contains a compendium of information on this subject. That is the purpose of this book. [Source : d'après la 4e de couverture].

Of special interest were submissions from the fields of mechanical, chemical, marine, safety, and energy engineering. We welcomed both original research articles as well as review articles. After one year, 28 papers were submitted and 14 were accepted for publication. The average processing time was 37.91 days. The authors had the following geographical distribution: China (9); Korea (3); Spain (1); and India (1). Papers covered a wide range of topics, including analysis of fans, turbines, fires in tunnels, vortex generators, deep sea mining, as well as pumps.
