Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Suffering Servant of the Lord: A Prophecy of Jesus Christ is a major new study of the fifty-third chapter of Isaiah. It is exegetical, expositional, devotional, and Christological: It is exegetical in that it is based on a careful study of the text. It is expositional in that it explains the meaning of chapter to both its original and modern readers. The book will give preachers and teachers help in outlining and illustrating their sermons and lectures. It is devotional in that this marvelous chapter addresses the deepest need of people, the need for forgiveness of sin and peace with God. It is Christological in that it focuses on the person of Jesus Christ. MacLeod writes, I have finished this work more convinced than ever that the passage is a straightforward prophecy of Jesus Christ written by the prophet Isaiah some seven hundred years before the birth of the Savior.

Book excerpt: Chaco Canyon, the great Ancestral Pueblo site of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, remains a central problem of Southwestern archaeology. Chaco, with its monumental “great houses,” was the center of a vast region marked by “outlier” great houses. The canyon itself has been investigated for over a century, but only a few of the more than 200 outlier great houses—key to understanding Chaco and its times—have been excavated. This volume explores the Chaco and post-Chaco eras in the northern San Juan area through extensive excavations at the Bluff Great House, a major Chaco “outlier” in Utah. Bluff’s massive great house, great kiva, and earthen berms are described and compared to other great houses in the northern Chaco region. Those assessments support intriguing new ideas about the Chaco region and the effect of the collapse of Chaco Canyon on “outlying” great houses. New insights from the Bluff Great House clarify the construction and use of great houses during the Chaco era and trace the history of great houses in the generations after Chaco’s decline. An innovative comparative study of the northern and southern portions of the Chaco world (the northern San Juan area around Bluff and the Cibola area around Zuni) leads to new ideas about population aggregation and regional abandonment in the Southwest. Appendixes present details and descriptions of artifacts recovered from Bluff: ceramics, projectile points, pollen analyses, faunal remains, bone tools, ornaments, and more. This book is one of only a handful of reports on Chacoan great houses in the northern San Juan region. It provides an in-depth study of the Chaco era and clarifies the relationship of “outlying” great houses to Chaco Canyon. Research at the Bluff Great House begins to answer key questions about the nature of Chaco and its region, and the history of the northern San Juan in the Chaco and post-Chaco worlds.

Book excerpt: There is a common hope for a richer, deeper life that connects a person to their past, to the people around them, and to a transcendental source—sometimes referred to as God, or the Unconscious. Root Out of Dry Ground provides an exploration into Carl Jung's depth psychology as it is used to understand a person's growth, the development of spirituality and religion in the West, as well as ways to live outside of traditional cultural and religious structures. Root Out of Dry Ground is an autobiographical sketch of Peter Buhler's life in southern Manitoba and Alberta; it covers Mennonite history in Canada and in Europe, and offers a philosophical analysis of historical developments across both Western and Eastern cultures. The book utilizes the ideas of Carl Jung in order to analyze historical developments over thousands of years, with a particular emphasis on world religions and the cultures they gave birth to, and to better understand Christian language and theology. In the autobiographical sketch, there is also careful attention to Peter Buhler's family, with an affirming remembrance of his brothers and sisters, and their mother and father. Root Out of Dry Ground serves as a foundation for bringing people together in a meaningful way, where the ideas of great thinkers and artists can help guide discussions and explorations of reality particularly for those who have lost their religious practice but remain rooted in their religious language and story.

Hallie Foote, the playwright's daughter, has written a foreword. A tribute to Foote, Burkhart's book leads the reader into a body of work that continues to win acclaim and grow in popularity for its transcendent and timeless messages. As Burkhart explains, "All of us are the 'ordinary' people who are at home as they live their 'ordinary' lives in the town Foote built out of his inspired understanding of what life means. One has no need to be from East Texas or to go there, for the town exists fully only in the theater, and it houses all of us. That's why this book is called Horton Foote's America."

It is intended for both professional and lay artists, for the casual crafter and hobbyist, and for those in both sacred and secular settings. It is for those who see things where others do not and for those whose imaginations cannot be confined by religious dogma and tradition. It is for musicians, singers, painters, sculptors, dancers, dramatists, writers, poets, carvers, weavers, film editors, photographers, filmmakers, architects, designers--anyone who finds inspiration in creativity. Focusing on the creative spirit within, it is designed to help you draw your inspiration from a Deeper Source. It is deeply rooted in Scripture--for the creative Christian must enter into the Word of God on a regular basis in order to know the choreographer of her steps, the crafter of her designs, the author and perfecter of her faith, and the sculptor of her creative heart, soul, mind, and body. And to know Him intimately.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s Texas, with its growing urban populations and big-city lifestyles, it is worth remembering that in 1850 only 10 percent of Texans lived in towns with as many as 100 people. The rest—of many ethnic and racial groups—lived off the land, which was blessedly suited to a profitable variety of crops and livestock and also provided an abundance of wildlife free for the taking. In Texas Roots, C. Allan Jones reminds us that the economic wealth of modern Texas arose from its agricultural heritage, a rich mixture of practices and traditions including: · Caddo hunting, gathering, gardening, and farming · Irrigated agriculture at Spanish missions · Hispanic ranching · Slave-based plantations · Small-scale farmers and ranchers Through time, people adapted the agricultural technologies, laws, and customs of New Spain, Mexico, Europe, and the South to their own practical, institutional, and legal needs. The result was a particularly Texan system that would serve as the foundation for the state’s economic strength after the Civil War. Texas Roots shines a bright light on our relationship and connection with the land, bringing alive an aspect of the Texas history that contributed immeasurably to the state’s identity and prosperity.
