Book excerpt: A spoof of politics in the context of ancient Rome The ancient Roman Empire was the greatest in the world. Its powerful army controlled most of Europe, England, the Middle East, Mediterranean and Egypt. Its architects and engineers built the most complex and advanced roads and aqueducts, temples and other grand structures that lasted for centuries. Its third emperor, Caligula, reigned for only four years, but left a legacy of unequaled ambition, extravagance, power, perversion and self-aggrandizement. This story tells the power struggle between the executive and legislative branches of government-the Emperor and the Roman Senate-that led to its downfall. It is told through the eyes of two strong Roman senators-Lindi Gramph and Dimit Romger-who spend their leisure time at the Senate baths at the Forum where the doorman Justus and bartender Magmus understand what's really happening. Some things never change, even in 2,000 years. A startling picture of political policymaking taking place in the Senate baths. -The Roman Times-Post An unconventional presentation of Emperor Caligula's power and perversion. -Mediterranean Review
Book Synopsis Sex Lives of the Roman Emperors by : Nigel Cawthorne
Download or read book Sex Lives of the Roman Emperors written by Nigel Cawthorne and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Romans were known to be a particular depraved when it came to sex, in fact, their sex lives are notorious. And is it any wonder? In Italy, they succeeded the Etruscans who enjoyed public nudity and generally preferred sex with boys. In the Mediterranean, the Roman Empire succeeded that of the Greeks who also had a very relaxed attitude to nudity, prostitution, homosexuality, promiscuity and the depiction of sex in the arts and religion. With no power to restrain them, the Roman emperors would indulge themselves in any way they fancied - often in the most degenerate way possible. Sex Lives of the Roman Emperors is a light-hearted yet meticulously researched look at the Ancient leaders and their sexual excesses. It will give a genuine insight into the characters of those people who have shaped our history and culture.
Book Synopsis Sexual Life in Ancient Rome by : Otto Kiefer
Download or read book Sexual Life in Ancient Rome written by Otto Kiefer and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psychological basis of the Roman Empire was a ruthless, frequently sadistic "will to power." This impulse is highly manifest in Ancient Roman attitudes towards sex. After describing women's position in Roman society, Otto Kiefer skilfully surveys the crypto-sexual satisfaction derived by Romans from a range of activities: the sadistic treatment of slaves, savage public executions involving crucifixion and the mauling of naked, unarmed prisoners by wild beasts, and almost incredible mass-gladiatorial combats. The strong sexual element in Roman religion receives attention, as do the varying attitudes towards sex of Rome's major writers. A gallery of Emperors and Empresses complete with their often bizarre tastes, is included and Otto Kiefer takes a critical look at the notion that Rome's sexual excesses contributed to its decline and fall.

Book Synopsis Catholicism, Sexual Deviance, and Victorian Gothic Culture by : Patrick R. O'Malley
Download or read book Catholicism, Sexual Deviance, and Victorian Gothic Culture written by Patrick R. O'Malley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-21 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been recognised that the Gothic genre sensationalised beliefs and practices associated with Catholicism. Often, the rhetorical tropes and narrative structures of the Gothic, with its lurid and supernatural plots, were used to argue that both Catholicism and sexual difference were fundamentally alien and threatening to British Protestant culture. Ultimately, however, the Gothic also provided an imaginative space in which unconventional writers from John Henry Newman to Oscar Wilde could articulate an alternative vision of British culture. Patrick O'Malley charts these developments from the origins of the Gothic novel in the mid-eighteenth century, through the mid-nineteenth-century sensation novel, toward the end of the Victorian Gothic in Bram Stoker's Dracula and Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure. O'Malley foregrounds the continuing importance of Victorian Gothic as a genre through which British authors defined their culture and what was outside it.
Book Synopsis Gardens of the Roman Empire by : Wilhelmina F. Jashemski

Jashemski sets out to examine the role of ancient Roman gardens in daily life throughout the empire. This study, therefore, includes for the first time, archaeological, literary, and artistic evidence about ancient Roman gardens across the entire Roman Empire from Britain to Arabia. Through well-illustrated essays by leading scholars in the field, various types of gardens are examined, from how Romans actually created their gardens to the experience of gardens as revealed in literature and art. Demonstrating the central role and value of gardens in Roman civilization, Jashemski and a distinguished, international team of contributors have created a landmark reference work that will serve as the foundation for future scholarship on this topic. Book Synopsis Invisible Romans by : Robert C. Knapp
Download or read book Invisible Romans written by Robert C. Knapp and published by Profile Books(GB). This book was released on 2013 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Knapp seeks out the ordinary people who formed the fabric of everyday life in ancient Rome and the outlaws and pirates who lay beyond it. They are the housewives, prostitutes, freedmen, slaves, soldiers, and gladiators who lived commonplace lives and left almost no trace in history - until now. But their words are preserved in literature, letters, inscriptions and graffiti and their traces can be found in the histories, treatises, plays and poetry created by the elite. A world lost from view for two millennia is recreated through these, and other, tell-tale bits of evidence cast off by the visible mass of Roman history and culture. Invisible Romans reveals how everyday Romans sought to survive and thrive under the afflictions of disease, war, and violence, and to control their fates under powers that both oppressed and ignored them. Their lives - both familiar and foreign to ours today - are shown against the tumult of a great empire that shaped their worlds as it forged the wider world around them.
Download or read book Antonina written by Wilkie Collins and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A romance of the fifth century, in which many of the scenes described in the 'Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire' are reset to suit the purpose of the author. Only two historical personages are introduced into the story, - the Emperor Honorius, and Alaric the Goth; and these attain only a secondary importance. Among the historical incidents used are the arrival of the Goths at the gates of Rome, the Famine, the last efforts of the besieged, the Treaty of Peace, the introduction of the Dragon of Brass, and the collection of the ransom. Our heroine Antonina, a very young Roman maiden, flees her father and an amorous patrician neighbor, into the arms of a young, handsome, gentle, sympathetic Goth. This book does not show the intricacy of plot and clever construction of the author's modern society stories; but it is full of action, vivid in color, and sufficiently close to history to convey a dramatic sense of the Rome of Honorius and the closing-in of the barbarians

Book excerpt: This volume collects the poetry and prose that served as the model and inspiration for so much of fin-de-siecle English and French writing, providing a vivid picture of sexual excess and debauchery in a cruel and violent society which has never ceased to fascinate the library and scholarly imagination of succeeding generations. "...concentrates on the outrageous behaviour of the ruling class of the Roman Empire, as described in passages selected from the prose, poetry and history of the period. Their murder plots, sexual deviances, orgies, cruelty and incessant intrigue put our politicians and their peccadillos on a play school level." Time Out
