Book excerpt: Composer Enrique Granados, along with Isaac Albéniz, brought modern Spanish music into the home of the avid music lover. Most of Granados' works are for piano solo, and through them he created a unique style of writing for the [then] modern school of Spanish keyboard music. Many of his works have been successfully arranged for guitar and are among the all time audience favorites in the instrument's literature. The origin of this beautiful Romanza is unclear and the manuscript does not list a date of creation. However it is probably circa 1909. The piece has many attributes that reflect Granados' love of the music of Robert Schumann. This largely unknown work (originally for violin and piano) is shown in a new and intimate light through the adaptation for cello and guitar by Gregg Nestor, and should prove to be an exciting and welcome addition to duo repertoire and chamber ensemble for this combination. We are grateful to Cecilia Palma and Edwin Guevara of Dúo Villa-Lobos who contributed to refinements of this edition.

Book excerpt: "This collection was written as a progressive link between the collections ""A Little Pop Music"" and ""Pop Music for Violin & Piano,"" also by Manfred Schmitz. The solo parts of these compositions offer an extensive number of individual interpretive possibilities, with difficulty ranging from easy to advanced. The varied pieces demand sophisticated interpretation from the soloist with regard to all articulations and the accentuation of anticipations. Practice of these pieces with an accompanist will teach the student to follow the piano's lead, to match intensities, and to develop good dynamic shading. Instrumental parts for violin, flute, viola, and cello are available separately. These parts can be used separately or together in unison. In English and German."

Book excerpt: This beautiful character piece in D-flat Major was written in 1903 but is still an excellent example of 19th Century romanticism, with rolling right hand chordal accompaniment over a cello-like "expressivo" melody. The piece becomes fairly challenging in its later sections, with octave and cadenza work. Biographical and performance notes are included.
