Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on Anthony Trollope's stylistic innovations in relation to Victorian liberalismIn his biography of William Makepeace Thackeray, Anthony Trollope posits the ideal of a man without style: 'I hold that gentleman to be the best dressed whose dress no one observes. I am not sure but that the same may be said of an author's written language'. Trollope's own appearance, unlike his written language, did not pass without observation, however. A contemporary poet recollects that he was 'hirsute and taurine of aspect'. This study unravels this paradox. It disentangles the many threads in Trollope's ostensibly transparent writing and reassembles the political and intellectual fabric that they weave, thus showing how Trollope's language exceeds and questions the concepts provided by contemporary ideologies.Key Features:Shows how Trollope's stylistic peculiarities perform his inflection of Victorian liberalismReads Victorian literature through the lens of German (post-)Romantic thinkers such as Goethe and Walter BenjaminPresents a panorama of Victorian liberalism in its literary, intellectual, and political contextExamines the writings from the last decade of Trollope's life that have received only scant critical attention, such as his novellas and his biographies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel contrasts two love affairs, each involving an aristocrat and a commoner. Trollope vividly evokes the dull working lives, plain homes, blank streets, and limited horizons of the dwellers.Marion Fay (1882) by Anthony Trollope is a multi-threaded Victorian novel of social mores, romantic entanglements and occasional heartfelt pathos.Marion Fay is a Quaker's daughter courted by the idealistic Lord Hampstead. Meanwhile, his best friend, the impoverished George Roden, is in love with the Lord's noble sister. Differences of class and situation create romantic drama in typical Trollope fashion. Anthony Trollope(24 April 1815 - 6 December 1882) was one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. Among his best-loved works is a series of novels collectively known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire, which revolves around the imaginary county of Barsetshire. He also wrote perceptive novels on political, social, and gender issues, and on other topical matters.Trollope's literary reputation dipped somewhat during the last years of his life, but he regained the esteem of critics by the mid-twentieth century.Thomas Anthony Trollope, Anthony's father, was a barrister. Though a clever and well-educated man and a Fellow of New College, Oxford, he failed at the bar due to his bad temper. In addition, his ventures into farming proved unprofitable, and he lost an expected inheritance when an elderly childless uncle remarried and had children. As a son of landed gentry,he wanted his sons to be raised as gentlemen and to attend Oxford or Cambridge. Anthony Trollope suffered much misery in his boyhood owing to the disparity between the privileged background of his parents and their comparatively small means.Born in London, Anthony attended Harrow School as a free day pupil for three years from the age of seven because his father's farm, acquired for that reason, lay in that neighbourhood. After a spell at a private school at Sunbury, he followed his father and two older brothers to Winchester College, where he remained for three years. He returned to Harrow as a day-boy to reduce the cost of his education. Trollope had some very miserable experiences at these two public schools. They ranked as two of the most lite schools in England, but Trollope had no money and no friends, and was bullied a great deal. At the age of twelve, he fantasized about suicide...

Book Synopsis Trollope On the Net by : Ellen Moody
Download or read book Trollope On the Net written by Ellen Moody and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes up two topics. The first is the British novelist Anthony Trollope (1815-1882), author of 47 novels and five volumes of short stories. The second is the Internet, specifically the creation of virtual communities through email and discussion lists, focusing, naturally enough, on discussion of the works of Trollope. The first chapter tells how the group began and focuses on the conversation that ensued on Trollopes first novel: The Macdermots of Ballycloran. The second chapter widens the discussion to take in all of Trollope's Irish novels. The third records the conversation of the group on Trollope's novel of jealousy: He Knew He Was Right. The fourth chapter discusses Trollope's shorter novels. The fifth returns to the group conversations; this time the discussion of The Claverings. The sixth chapter discusses the illustrations of Trollope's novels. The seventh chapter records the group conversation on Trollope's most class-ridden novel, Lady Anna. The eighth chapter discusses trollope's life, through his An Autobiography. The last chapter sets the group conversation on Can You Forgive Her? into the context of the Palliser (or Parliamentary) novel sequence. The Preface is by John Letts, Chairman of the (British) Trollope Society. The book contains twenty-four illustrations from the original editions of Trollope's novels.

Download or read book The Parson's Daughter of Oxney Colne written by Anthony Trollope and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This enjoyable short story from Anthony Trollope follows the arrogant Captain John Broughton as he seeks to cement his place as heir to his wealthy aunt Miss Le Smyrger. Set in Devonshire, love and romance are also in the air for Captain Broughton, but will his ego ultimately be his downfall? Anthony Trollope (1815 – 1882) was a Victorian writer and author of 47 novels. He also wrote an autobiography, short stories and plays, travel articles, reviews and lectures. A prolific writer, he made no secret of the fact that money was his motivation for writing – an admission which raised eyebrows among his literary contemporaries at the time. The amount of works Trollope authored are testament to his belief in hard work. His first successful novel was The Warden followed by its sequel, Barchester Towers. The Chronicles of Barsetshire are perhaps his most well-known series of novels, though many of his works have been adapted for TV and radio, starring many familiar faces such as Alan Rickman, David Tennant, Bill Nighy and Tom Hollander. Alongside his literary career, Trollope also worked for some time for the Post Office and is credited with the introduction of the iconic post box to Britain. A memorial to Anthony Trollope was unveiled in Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey in 1993.

Book Synopsis Virtual Play and the Victorian Novel by : Timothy Gao
Download or read book Virtual Play and the Victorian Novel written by Timothy Gao and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pondering the town he had invented in his novels, Anthony Trollope had 'so realised the place, and the people, and the facts' of Barset that 'the pavement of the city ways are familiar to my footsteps'. After his novels end, William Thackeray wonders where his characters now live, and misses their conversation. How can we understand the novel as a form of artificial reality? Timothy Gao proposes a history of virtual realities, stemming from the imaginary worlds created by novelists like Trollope, Thackeray, Charlotte Bronte, and Charles Dickens. Departing from established historical or didactic understandings of Victorian fiction, Virtual Play and the Victorian Novel recovers the period's fascination with imagined places, people, and facts. This text provides a short history of virtual experiences in literature, four studies of major novelists, and an innovative approach for scholars and students to interpret realist fictions and fictional realities from before the digital age. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
