Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Ancient Christian Texts volume, translated and edited by Gerald L. Bray, is the first of two that will offer a first English translation of the anonymous fourth-century commentary on the thirteen letters of Paul. Widely viewed as one of the finest pre-Reformation commentaries on the Pauline Epistles, this commentary, until the time of Erasmus, was attributed to Ambrose. The name Ambrosiaster ("Star of Ambrose") seems to have been given to the anonymous author of the work by its Benedictine editors (1686- 1690).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romans and I and II Corinthians It is a real question as to whether there has ever been a time when so many so-called "gospels" have been proclaimed as divinely ordained ways of salvation as we find extant at the present time. Cults and isms there are by the scores, each with its pretension to be the infallible voice of God speaking to the crying needs of the human soul. The mere fact of the existence of spurious gospels is not in itself peculiar to this time. Even at the time when Luke wrote his gospel many false gospels, so-called, were extant. In the preface to Luke we read: "Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word: it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus." There is, however, a great need to-day that the pure, simple, unalloyed gospel of Jesus Christ be definitely and unmistakably set forth with all the positiveness and high accentuation of apostolic days. The Gospel of Jesus Christ alone is the panacea for the ills of the race - domestic, political, industrial, commercial, social, marital, military. In the Epistle to the Romans, Paul, the writer, claims that the message of the Epistle is the very "Gospel of God" (cf. i. 1 with ii. 16 and xvi. 25). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent commentary on 2 Corinthians by Paul Barnett illumines the historical background of the church at Corinth and clarifies the meaning of Paul's passionate letter both for those first-century Christians and for the church today. Assuming the unity of the letter, for which extensive argument is offered, Barnett takes the view that Paul is, in particular, addressing the issue of triumphalism in Corinth. This triumphalism is expressed by the newly arrived missioners who portray Paul as "inferior" to themselves; it is also endemic among the Corinthians. According to Barnett, the recurring theme of the letter is "power-in-weakness", based on the motif of the Resurrection of the Crucified, which lies at the heart of the gospel of Christ. Also fundamental to the letter is the theme of fulfillment of the "promises of God" by Christ and the Spirit under the New Covenant. Written for scholars, pastors, and lay readers alike, this new commentary on 2 Corinthians will be a lasting reference work for those interested in this important section of Scripture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do others look to you for leadership? Do you face a major task or shoulder heavy responsibilities? Do you want to take your leadership skills to a higher level? When Nehemiah confronted the task of rebuilding Jerusalem's wall, he was heartbroken by the damage he saw and nearly overwhelmed by the task that lay before him. Yet through the application of timeless leadership principles, Nehemiah completed this nearly impossible project, and laid a pattern for success which is just as valid for us today. Charles Swindoll brings his sensible and straightforward style to offer a deeply spiritual approach to the role of leader. Whatever the context, secular or ministerial, he demonstrates how to size up a task, organize and motivate a team, and respond to inevitable obstacles such as these: Unforeseen setbacks Unrelenting deadlines Criticism and outside resistance Personality conflicts Financial pressures and temptations The insights that Swindoll draws from Nehemiah's wise administration will change your approach to leadership forever.
