Book excerpt: Robert Bickersteth's Romanism in Its Relation to the Second Coming of Christ is a fascinating exploration of the relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and the concept of the second coming of Christ. Bickersteth argues that the Catholic Church's teachings on the subject are incompatible with Protestant beliefs, and that this has important implications for Christians of all denominations. Written from a Protestant perspective, this book sheds light on a key theological debate that remains relevant today. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So what does the Bible actually say about the end times that lead to the return of Jesus Christ? The differing ideas that divide believers into four major points-of-view are examined in the Four Views of the End Times pamphlet. This bestseller tackles Pre- and Post-millennialism, as well as Historic Premillennialism and Amillennialism in 12 panels of objective information. For each view, the glossy full-color pamphlet includes: A definition of the position with supporting Scriptures A time line of the view’s popularity A sampling of Christian leaders supporting that view Size: 8.5”x 5.5” unfolds to 33” long. Fits inside most Bible covers. The events leading up to the return of Jesus Christ are controversial, and many Christians identify with one of four positions: Dispensational Premillennialism, Historic Premillennialism, Amillennialism, or Postmillennialism. The Four Views of the End Times pamphlet makes the viewpoints and their biblical support easy to understand. Packed with information regarding what Jesus and Paul taught about the end times, the pamphlet also includes a list of important terms and their definitions, such as: Church Eschatology Rapture The Great Tribulation Preterism Four Views of the End Times pamphlet addresses end-time eschatology, outlining the four major points of view regarding events leading up to the second coming of Christ. Below is the outline applied to each of the four views with a few examples: What is emphasized by the view Which Scriptures seem to support the position The time period for the view’s main popularity Dispensational Premillennialism: Gained acceptance in the 1800s and is still widespread Historic Premillennialism: The earliest view following the time of the apostles Amillennialism: Emerged in the 5th century; championed by St. Augustine Postmillennialism: Became popular in the 1800s but decreased in 1900s as a result of the Great Depression A graphic timeline showing the order of events held by that view A sampling of Christian leaders sharing the viewpoints: Dispensational Premillennialism Dr. Charles Stanley Rev. Tim Lahaye Hal Lindsay Historic Premillennialism Justin Martyr AD 100-165 John Warwick Montgomery – current Amillennialism Martin Luther John Calvin Postmillennialism Jonathan Edwards C. H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The second coming of Jesus Christ is the core of the biblical worldview, the climax of the biblical message, the cornerstone of biblical theology, and the centrepiece of authentic biblical faith for the twenty-first century.' At the heart of this bold opening statement by Stephen Motyer is the conviction that Jesus Christ is the 'centre' of the Scriptures, even though he only appears at the end. For the New Testament writers, Jesus Christ revolutionized their understanding of the Scriptures and gave them a new centre around which to interpret the work of God in the world - and the climax of that work is the 'second coming' of that same Jesus Christ. Jesus himself used the language of the Scriptures to promise his 'coming again', the 'coming of the Son of Man'. Hence we need the whole of Scripture to understand what the second coming means for us today. The fact that the Bible ends with the prayer 'Come, Lord Jesus!' (Revelation 22:20) is deeply appropriate. The second coming is the 'end' of the biblical message, its 'omega point', its grand finale, the denouement when all the players in the drama of earth history, both human and angelic, are gathered in the drawing room to hear the Master unpack the plot and give the verdict. Motyer's comprehensive, stimulating study is divided into two parts. Part One, 'The biblical frame', examines three Old Testament passages and lays the foundation for Part Two, 'New Testament hopes and visions', which explores a series of key texts. He focuses on the second coming, rather than on millennialism or the 'end times', in order to provide the fundamental biblical theology that must underlie our whole sense of God's future for his world.

It is also crucial to a positive and relevant Christian worldview in a world that otherwise despairs of real hope. "An earthly hope without the prospect of life beyond death is illusory and shortlived," writes the author. "But a real hope of eternal life with God sets us free from anxiety about death, and frees us to work for the transformation of the world." "The courage, clarity and teaching skills of Dr. Travis in this important book are going to help a great many people." -Michael Green "As a guide to a healthy and biblical perspective in thought and life this book would take some beating ... it gloriously lives up to the solid affirmation of its title." --Church of England Newspaper Dr. Stephen H. Travis is Vice-Principal of St. John's College, Nottingham, England. His other books include Getting to Know the New Testament and The Bible in Time.

Book excerpt: Lord, When? looks at the Second Coming from a Scriptural point of view, while examining the questions, objections, and various views of the Tribulation period and the Rapture of the Church. As the world draws closer to the Second Coming of our Lord, it is more important than ever that all Christians understand what the Bible says about this crucial doctrine. Our greatest hope lies not in theories of inferences but in undeniable facts left by our Lord in His holy word about: The Seventh Trumpet The Great Apostasy The Restrainer The Antichrist The Seventy Weeks of Daniel The 144,000 Servants With over twenty years of research and study of the end of times, author John J. Cobb brings a special and unique approach to these areas. He has taught four verse-by-verse expositional classes on the book of Revelation. His passion for scriptural clarity in eschatology has been the driving force behind Lord, When? Whether the information gathered is from him or other authors and experts in this area, Minister Cobb has taken great care to bring it all to bear against the backdrop of Holy Scripture—the final arbiter of all Christian doctrine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching theme of this book is that the Second Coming of Jesus happened in AD 72, and that therefore Jesus is not coming again to rapture the church. The book lays out a thorough exploration in support of this theme. Daniels prophecies are foundational, especially his prophecy of the Seventy Weeks in Daniel 9:2427 and his prophecy of four sequential Fertile-Crescent, Mediterranean empires (see Daniel 7). The Fourth Empire, or the Roman Empire, is the key to understanding my theme, with stress on the meaning of the horns on the head of the Fourth Beast (see Daniel 7:78). As proof of my theme, I use the biblical code of two or three witnesses (see, e.g., Deuteronomy 19:15, Matthew 18:16, John 8:17, and 1 John 5:8). The three witnesses I give are Daniel, Jesus, and the collective apostlesall of whom taught and agreed that Jesuss Second Coming would take place before Jesuss generation passed away (Matthew 24:34). Furthermore, I show how the epistles of the New Testament reflect this theme by citing scores of passages from them for my readers to consider. Finally, in chapter 5 of the book and in five appendixes, I show how the Book of Revelation, aptly interpreted, fully agrees with this theme.
