Download or read book Poems of Góngora written by Gongora and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1966-01-02 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many students of Spanish literature will have encountered some of Góngora's poems. No Spanish poet is grater or more rewarding, but few are as difficult for the beginner. His style is a habit of mind: radically metaphorical, elliptical, witty, highly sensuous, transmuting the world of the sense into a world of the spirit. To read him, one has to learn these characteristic habits and perform athletic mental feats as one goes along. It would be too easy to say that Professor Jones has made Góngora 'easy'; but he has certainly made him more accessible. A long introduction briefly deals with Góngora's life, and then gives solid critical guidance to the poems. It includes passages of sustained and detailed analysis which explain how characteristic poems 'work' and it incorporates original insights and research. The notes are full and are designed to help the reader through the difficulties by offering critical comment.

Book Synopsis The Critical Difference by : Barbara Johnson
Download or read book The Critical Difference written by Barbara Johnson and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1985-03 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barbara Johnson investigates the significant and illuminating ways in which both literature and criticism ate "critically different" from what they purport to be. Her subtle and provocative studies of Balzac, Mallarme, Baudelaire, Apollinaire, Melville, Poe, Bathes, Lacan, Austin, and Derrida take a refreshing new approach to the fundamental questions of meaning, interpretation, and the relationship between literature and criticism. In each of seven essays, a clear, precise, and detailed reading of the rhetoric of one of more literary or critical works reveals the text's fundamental discrepancies, ambuquities, and contradictions. If rhetoric is seen as language's capacity to differ from literal statement, and if "to differ" can also mean "to disagree," then the reading of the rhetoric of literature and theory here is an attempt to capture the logic of a text's own disagreement with itself.
Book Synopsis A Companion to Don Quixote by : Anthony J. Close
Download or read book A Companion to Don Quixote written by Anthony J. Close and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2008 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to help the English-speaking reader, with an interest in Spanish literature but without specialised knowledge of Cervantes, to understand his long and complex masterpiece: its major themes, its structure, and the inter-connections between its component parts. Beginning from a review of Don Quixote's relation to Cervantes's life, literary career, and its social and cultural context, Anthony Close goes on to examine the structure and distinctive nature of Part I (1605) and Part II (1615), the conception of the characters of Don Quixote and Sancho, Cervantes's word-play and narrative manner, and the historical evolution of posterity's interpretation of the novel, with particular attention to its influence on the theory of the genre. One of the principal questions tackled is the paradoxical incongruity between Cervantes's conception of his novel as a light work of entertainment, without any explicitly acknowledged profundity, and posterity's view of it as a universally symbolic masterpiece, revolutionary in the context of its own time, and capable of meaning something new and different to each succeeding age. ANTHONY CLOSE, now retired, was Reader in Spanish at the University of Cambridge.
Book Synopsis The Perilous Hunt by : Edith Randam Rogers
Download or read book The Perilous Hunt written by Edith Randam Rogers and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the symbolic language of ballads, a lady's costly dress tells of the beauty of the body beneath it or of the wearer's happiness; a lost hawk or hound foreshadows the hunter's fate long before the plot reaches a turning point. In her original and far-reaching study of such familiar narrative elements, Edith Randam Rogers adds much to our understanding of poetic expression in the ballad tradition. In focusing on individual motifs as they appear in different ballads, different languages, and different periods, Rogers proves the existence of a reliable lingua franca of symbolism in European balladry. Lines or even whole stanzas that have defied interpretation often come to life when the reader is aware of the meaning of a particular motif in such an international vocabulary of images. Thus this book makes available important new critical tools sure to have significant results for ballad scholarship.
