But as a younger son who has never been given any responsibility in his life, he fears he isn’t up to the task. The chance to prove himself when the stakes are as high as they could get is irresistible, though, and he is ready to become the hero he has always wanted to be. Until temptation winks at him. Actress Violetta Roan is the talk of the Roman theater world for her daring and bold stage presence. But Violetta’s persona hides a darker secret. She has more of a connection with Thomas than first meets the eye, and when Violetta and Thomas team up on a covert mission, sparks fly. Is there more to the passion between them or is Violetta just playing another role? When the truth is revealed and Thomas finally has a chance to rescue his brother and prove himself worthy, their newfound love is put to the test. Can they complete the mission, or will the dark forces that have been chasing the McGoverns since Paris finally win? Book excerpt: "It is five years since Quintus fought his last battle. It has been a quiet time, spent breeding horses. An old friend's death gives him an urge to travel and see what's left of the Roman Empire; whose army he served so faithfully. His itchy feet take him through Western Europe during the fifth century. A year on the road will see him go from honoured old soldier to slave and then back to respected general. In his adventures he meets the characters who shaped those years, St. Patrick, Niall of the Nine Hostages, King Arthur's father and the ancestors of the founders of France. Europe is in upheaval. Goths, Franks and Huns are all pushing west while the Irish push east. Meanwhile what's left of the Roman Empire is in rebellion. Can the old general save them from themselves?"--www.amazon.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story begins in A.D. 364 when the author of this memoir, Marcus Cedranus, is born into a middle class landowners family in western Britain. While his material prospects are promising, his deteriorating relationship with his parents causes him to leave home for the continent. In Gaul he becomes a teamster for a freight hauling company, meets an older woman who will eventually play a major role in his life and is drafted into the Roman army in 382. He is assigned to Legion XXII in Mainz and in 383 is temporarily transferred to Belgrade on the Danube. A revolt in the west makes this transfer permanent. He participates in several military campaigns and takes part in a triumph in Constantinople in 386. In 388 his regiment takes part in the eastern offensive against the revolt in the west that has by now spread to Italy. With the revolt suppressed, he is assigned to a new imperial guard regiment for the restored western emperor, Valentinian II. During another transfer to the east Marcus suffers a terrible personal tragedy from which it is impossible to recover. Another civil war breaks out in the west and is suppressed with terrible casualties. Marcus is appointed tribune and made a member of the personal staff of Stilicho, the new generalissimo of the west. Further military adventures take place in Greece, Britain and Italy. A massive barbarian invasion of the west on December 31, 406 triggers political instability leading to revolts in both Britain and Italy. This inevitably leads to the sack of Rome by Alaric and his Visigoths in 410.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman foundation myth has been the subject of classical scholarship for centuries. But much in the story of Romulus and Remus remains unexplained. This is the first English language book-length study of the Lupercalia, a religious festival central to understanding both the Roman foundation myth and the history of Rome. The festival of the Lupercalia was a male initiation ritual and shares a number of traits with similar rituals across the world. The agonistic elements in the story of Romulus and Remus and the Lupercalia can be compared to a number of Vedic rituals and traced back to a common Indo-European prehistory. The Lupercalia celebration remained a central annual event throughout the history of Rome and reflected political and social life in the city. Caesar used it to stage a refusal of kingship and Augustus restored its initiatory aspect, which continued in the period of the Empire. It survived all attempts of Christian prohibition to appear in the form of a carnival that criticized the pope in the late 5th century. In sum, the book offers a new interpretation of the Roman foundation myth and the Lupercalia. It follows the transformation of a unique ritual from its Indo-European roots through Roman history to late antiquity.

Book excerpt: This volume explores the effects of the Roman censorial mark (nota censoria) and the influence of censorial regulations on the development of written law in ancient Rome. The censor was one of the most fascinating legal institutions of Republican Rome. One of the most colourful and anecdotal areas of censorial activities was in the upkeep of public morals (regimen morum) through which censors controlled private, even intimate, aspects of Roman life. Although the office of the censor has been studied by various scholars from prosopographical, historical, and social perspectives, there has been no comprehensive study of its impact on the development of written law. This book aims to full the gap by providing an overview of the applications of the nota censoria to demonstrate its impact on the development of numerous regulations in the field of private and public laws during the Republican and Imperial periods. This book explores the relationship between magistrate law (ius honorarium) and regimen morum, and how the activities of the censors in this area influenced the formation of praetorian edicts and later legislation during the Principate period, most notably the marriage laws of Augustus. By examining the influence of the censor and the censorial nota in these spheres, readers will gain a new understanding of the overall significance of the censor's office in shaping the Roman legal order. The Censors as Guardians of Public and Family Life in the Roman Republic will be of interest to students and scholars of Roman law in both the Republican and Imperial periods, as well as to those interested in Roman moral attitudes and society more broadly.
