Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Tutto sugli Imperatori romani, dal primo all’ultimo . Tutto sulla CULTURA di Roma e mille cose su: legioni, generali, esercito, gladiatori, schiavi, eunuchi, pretoriani, cucina, arte, architettura, abbigliamento, tecnologia, arte militare, armi, tattiche di battaglia, tragedia, commedia, teatro, letteratura, religione, istruzione, lavoro, medicina, battaglie navali, sessualità, erotismo, ironia, inciuci, superstizione, turpiloquio, congiure, tradimenti, assassini, guerre civili, persecuzioni, torture, miti, leggende, dinastie, popoli italici, barbari, invasioni, tiranni, dittatori, follie, soldati, centurioni, civiltà nemiche, etruschi, greci, persiani, unni, goti, vandali, germani, galli, franchi, britanni, egizi, ebrei, celti, cimbri, teutoni, Annibale, Asdrubale, Pirro, Vercingetorige, Spartaco, Alarico, Enea, Virgilio, Cartagine, Costantinopoli, ecc. .

Book Synopsis Athenian Ostracism and its Original Purpose by : Marek Węcowski
Download or read book Athenian Ostracism and its Original Purpose written by Marek Węcowski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ostracism is by far the most emblematic institution of ancient Athenian democracy. This volume offers a reassessment of recently found ostraka (or potsherds, on which the names of the 'candidates' for exile were inscribed by citizens) from several Greek cities outside Athens, a thorough reconstruction of the history and of the procedure of ostracism in Athens, and a comprehensive account of the political circumstances of the introduction of the law on ostracism by Cleisthenes in 508/507 BCE. Marek Węcowski's original study focuses not only on the final stage, the day of the vote, but on the entire operation and procedure of ostracisation. Tracing the logic of the political play in Athens between the opening and final stages of ostracism, Węcowski argues that Athenian ostracism was a mechanism devised to impose compromise on the main players in Athenian political life, thereby avoiding the punishment of political elites by exile of leading politicians resulting from unpredictable votes by the citizenry. To support this hypothesis, Węcowski turns to the theory of the 'evolution of cooperation' as formulated by the American mathematician and political scientist Robert Axelrod based on the iterated prisoner's dilemma in game theory, applied as a probabilistic analogy to the dynamics of Athenian political life under democracy.

Book Synopsis The Porta Stabia Neighborhood at Pompeii Vol 1 by : Steven J. R. Ellis
Download or read book The Porta Stabia Neighborhood at Pompeii Vol 1 written by Steven J. R. Ellis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-03 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of four volumes that present the results from the University of Cincinnati's archaeological excavations of the Porta Stabia neighborhood at Pompeii. These excavations targeted two town blocks on either side of the via Stabiana (insulae VIII.7 and I.1), which comprised modest houses, shops, workshops, food and drink outlets, and hospitality buildings. The present volume describes and documents the phased, structural development of this neighborhood over several centuries. The earliest discernible activity here dates to the 6th century BCE, with the insulae taking their definitive shape only in the 2nd century BCE. It is from this time that production activities dominate the neighborhood, only to be wholly replaced by retail-oriented street-fronts from the early 1st century CE. Underpinning this narrative of urban development is a focus on the social and structural making of the Porta Stabia neighborhood, along with an interest in both the micro- (urban site formation processes) and macro-contextualization of the site (setting the results within a larger historic and urban framework).
