Book excerpt: The objective of this report is to identify known relationships between commercial vehicle safety and crash causation factors and to prepare a synthesis of safety implications of oversize/overweight (OS/OW) commercial vehicles. This information can be used to support commercial vehicle enforcement and permitting practices and justify expenditures and investments on size and weight enforcement to enhance safety. In producing this report, insight was gained into the impacts of truck size and weight (TSW) regulations through three case studies. The state of practice in estimating large truck crash rates is complicated because of the many configurations and the wide range of possible weights for any particular configuration. This report highlights four primary findings regarding the contributions of OS/OW to commercial vehicle crashes found by its researchers.

Book excerpt: "The effect of changes in the suspension of a cargo tank semitrailer on its roll stability was studied in experiments and modeling. Three configurations were considered: a typical design; a design with a wider track; and a design with wider track and greater separation between the air bags. All configurations used new generation wide base single tires (NGWBST). The experiments consisted of a steady state "ramp" steer, a transient "step" steer, and a more challenging dynamic "double lane change" maneuver. Lumped parameter and flexible body models of the combination vehicle were developed and exercised. Widening the track of the semitrailer's axles raised the threshold for lifting a tire from the pavement, as predicted. Moving the suspension's air bags farther apart changed several characteristics of the behavior, with no consistently measurable changes in wheel liftoff threshold. Limited testing with electronic stability control (ESC) showed that the suspension changes did not affect ESC performance. The damping of the trailer roll oscillation provided by the suspension itself was greater than the damping provided by the shock absorbers. This auxiliary damping was generated, at least in part, by the restricted movement of air between the suspension air bags. This work is the final in a series of studies funded by NTRCI to characterize the roll behavior of heavy vehicles and develop computer simulation models to explain that behavior. Previous studies have explored the behavior of a van semitrailer, a flatbed semitrailer, and a tank semitrailer"--Technical report documentation page.

Book excerpt: Abstract: To prevent rollover accident and reduce the loss on highway traffic, the Center for Automotive Research and Intelligent Transportation of The Ohio State University conducted research programs to study rollover prediction and prevention. This thesis is partial work of this project. In this thesis, on-road and untripped heavy duty vehicle rollover propensity is studied under characterization maneuvers. A heavy duty truck, the combination of a tractor and a semi-trailer, is used as an example for analysis. Both the complex nonlinear model and its simple version are given for a typical heavy duty truck and ION, the off-road navigator from OSU team in Darpa Grand Challenge, and unknown parameters in the linear model are found by system identification using data from TruckSim. Characteristic parameters for the ION model are tuned to match a real situation in which one wheel lift-off happened. An integration of two prevailing anti- rollover control methods, namely active suspension control and differential braking, is applied on the model of ION for rollover prevention. Simulations are given to show the advantage of the integrating control method compared with each separate controller. The influences of the road curvature, or the steering input and the travel speed on rollover propensity are analyzed and compared for these two vehicles. The results show that vehicle roll dynamic can be predicted to match that of a real driving case and the proposed control method effectively improves the roll stability both for ION and the heavy truck.

Book excerpt: The test procedure applies to roll coupled units such as straight trucks, tractor semitrailers, full trailers, B-trains, etc. The test is aimed at evaluating the level of lateral acceleration required to rollover a vehicle or a roll-coupled unit of a vehicle in a steady turning situation. Transient, vibratory, or dynamic rollover situations are not simulated by this test. Furthermore, the accuracy of the test decreases as the tilt angle increases, although this is a small effect at the levels of tilt angle used in testing heavy trucks. The test accuracy is accepted for vehicles that will rollover at lateral acceleration levels below 0.5 g corresponding to a tilt table angle of less than approximately 27 degrees. Even so, the results for heavy trucks with rollover thresholds greater than 0.5 g could be used for comparing their relative static roll stability. The Vehicle Characterization Committee which owned the report has become inactivated and the technical expertise for the subject report within the Truck-Bus Council is not available at this time.

Book excerpt: The Heavy Truck Rollover Characterization Study - Phase-B builds on the results of prior phases of research. Phases 1 and 2 (Funded by Federal Highway Administration) involved heavy truck rollover characterization for a tractor and box-trailer; and Phase-A involved the characterization of a tractor and flatbed-trailer. Phase-B of the Heavy Truck Rollover Characterization Study included on-track testing utilizing New Generation Single Wide-Based Tires (NGSWBTs) and standard dual tires; the use of a Volvo VT830 class-8 tractor (the same tractor that was used in Phase-A); the use of three LBT tanker-trailers (two for characterization and one for test-track testing); and a Bendix Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system on the tractor and tanker-trailer. Characterization was conducted by both Michelin and WMU. The standardized torsional stiffness testing developed by Michelin in Phase-A and the procedure developed by WMU were utilized for characterization of the respective tanker-trailers at Michelin and WMU. The tanker-trailer at Michelin was also characterized on Michelin's Kinematics and Compliance (K & C) test rig. The purpose of the characterization efforts was to generate detailed K & C data about the tanker-trailer that could be utilized in selected vehicle dynamics models. Phase-B also involved the development of a vehicle dynamcs model of the tractor and tanker-trailer in TruckSim[R] or an equivalent vehicle dynamics model. WMU also continued with the development of their solid, finite element, and kinematic models, and will apply them to make initial design recommendations to be considered in Phase-C of this research.

Book excerpt: Vehicle rollover accidents have been a serious safety problem for the last three decades. Although rollovers are a small percentage of all traffic accidents, they do account for a large proportion of severe and fatal injuries. Specifically, some large passenger vehicles, such as large vans, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles, are more prone to rollover accidents with a high center of gravity (CG) and narrow track width. Vehicle rollover accidents may be grouped into two categories: tripped and untripped rollovers. A tripped rollover commonly occurs when a vehicle skids and digs its tires into soft soil or hits a tripping mechanism such as a curb with a sufficiently large lateral velocity. On the other hand, the untripped rollover is induced by extreme maneuvers during critical driving situations, such as excessive speed during cornering, obstacle avoidance, and severe lane change maneuver. In these situations, the forces at the tire-road contact point are large enough to cause the vehicle to roll over. Furthermore, vehicle rollover may occur due to external disturbances such as side-wind and steering excitation. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the dynamic stability and control of tripped and untripped vehicle rollover so as to avoid vehicle rollover accidents. In this book, different dynamic models are used to describe the vehicle rollover under both untripped and special tripped situations. From the vehicle dynamics theory, rollover indices are deduced, and the dynamic stabilities of vehicle rollover are analyzed. In addition, some active control strategies are discussed to improve the anti-rollover performance of the vehicle.
