Download or read book Chicago Rink Rats written by Tom Russo and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1950, roller skating had emerged as the number-one participatory sport in America. Ironically, the war years launched the Golden Age of Roller Skating. Soldiers serving overseas pleaded for skates along with their usual requests for cigarettes and letters from home. Stateside, skating uplifted morale and kept war factory workers exercising. By the end of the decade, five thousand rinks operated across the country. Its epicenter: Chicago! And no one was left behind! The Blink Bats, a group of Braille Center skaters, held their own at the huge Broadway Armory rink. Meanwhile, the Swank drew South Side crowds to its knee-action floor and stocked jukebox. Eighteen celebrated rinks are now gone, but rinks that remain honor the traditions of the sport's glory years. Author Tom Russo scoured newspaper archives and interviewed skaters of the roller capital's heyday to reveal the enduring legacy of Chicago's rink rats.

Download or read book Path To Gold written by Debbie Dashner and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-02-29 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne Ryerson is a senior honor student who also loves to roller skate. Her skate club is called “Rollerland Skate”. One day, many children and teens are practicing diverse spins and jumps when their instructor, Kathy Schillings, informs them that roller skating should make the 2012 Summer Olympics as an Exhibition Sport. All the skaters are excited at this prospect. Lynn Harrington, Anne’s best friend, encourages her to compete, (something that Anne has never done before). She, like Joyce Eddies, a Senior-level competitor, believes that Anne has a natural gift for skating and that she should carry her abilities to the next level. However, Anne has a serious obstacle to her entering competition: her mother who considers herself to be an exceedingly prim and proper individual, ( as well as someone who knows all the answers about everything), is dead set against Anne’s entering any kind of a skating competition. Anne’s mother, (though not her father), objects strenuously. Her mother’s objection doesn’t disturb Anne very much. Skating Proficiency Tests, school work, and house work keep Anne sufficiently busy.

Download or read book Rolling Thunder written by Scott Stephens and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scott Stephens received his first set of roller skates at age six in 1966 – and soon he was staging Roller Derby games in his backyard. Growing up in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s, it was impossible not to have heard about Roller Derby and the Los Angeles Thunderbirds, whose games were televised. In fact, many of the T-Birds were just as popular as those on traditional sports teams such as the Dodgers, Lakers, and Rams. When Stephens started training at the new T-Bird Rollerdrome in Pico Rivera, it was mainly because he loved roller skating on a banked track. He had no idea that the Roller Games league was low on skaters. From 1978 to 1981, from his seat on the infield of the track and on the track itself, Stephens was part of everything the games had to offer, including its underground scene of shadowy characters and venues, adrenalin seekers, and alternative lifestyles. He loved it! Trace the history of Roller Derby and Los Angeles’ flagship team, the T-Birds, with this brilliant account highlighting the sport’s booms and busts.

Book Synopsis Stephen Shore: Selected Works, 1973-1981 (Signed Edition) by :
Download or read book Stephen Shore: Selected Works, 1973-1981 (Signed Edition) written by and published by Aperture Direct. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen Shore's Uncommon Places is indisputably a canonic body of work--a touchstone for those interested in photography and the American landscape. Remarkably, despite having been the focus of numerous shows and books, including the eponymous 1982 Aperture classic (expanded and reissued several times), this series of photographs has yet to be explored in its entirety. Over the past five years, Shore has scanned hundreds of negatives shot between 1973 and 1981. In this volume, Aperture has invited an international group of fifteen photographers, curators, authors, and cultural figures to select ten images apiece from this rarely seen cache of images. Each portfolio offers an idiosyncratic and revealing commentary on why this body of work continues to astound; how it has impacted the work of new generations of photography and the medium at large; and proposes new insight on Shore's unique vision of America as transmuted in this totemic series. Texts and image selections by Wes Anderson, Quentin Bajac, David Campany, Paul Graham, Guido Guidi, Takashi Homma, An-My Leê, Michael Lesy, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Francine Prose, Ed Ruscha, Britt Salvesen, Taryn Simon, Thomas Struth, and Lynne Tillman
