Book excerpt: "Culture, Health and Religion at the Millennium : Sweden Unparadised presents interpretations of Swedish culture, health, politics, and religion today, as the image of Sweden is being transformed from the well-functioning but existentially bland economic wonder to a more pluralistic, fragmented and gloomy society. The changing situation of contemporary Sweden means that the time is ripe to make a self-critical appraisal of the state of Sweden today. In six chapters, renowned Swedish scholars from film studies, literary studies, political science, religious studies and theology give their interpretations of sin, culture, health, politics, and religion in contemporary Sweden, with a particular focus upon its cultural representation in popular media. This book will serve as a background of much of the contemporary boom of Swedish fiction, both in popular literature as well as on the silver screen"--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: Several years ago, freshly returned from a year in Stockholm but deeply en meshed in the American Malaise of the late 1960's, I sketched out an image of Swedish policy-making that defined a generalized policy-making role and sought to relate that role to both citizen attitudes and the elite political culture 1 in Sweden. Although that sketch seems to have been taken seriously by other foreigners, I think it is fair to say that the principal reaction of my Swedish friends and colleagues was amusement. When I later (1970-71) returned for another year in Stockholm, I found myself being introduced at parties as the man who had written ''that marvelously out-of-date sketch of how Swedish politics used to work-hah, hah. " Or, I would be referred to as the American who, like Marquis Childs some years earlier, "believed our propaganda. " By 1970-71, of course, the Swedish political environment had become more boisterous than it had been in 1967-68. Indeed, during the course of that year my amused colleagues found themselves enmeshed in a strike action against the government that was part of an emotional series of such actions that some observers thought would bring most public services to a halt. If my earlier portrait had been influenced (too much, they thought) by the American Malaise in which I was implicated, so must their later reaction to my portrait have been influenced (too much, I thought) by the Swedish Turmoil of 1970 and 1971.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sweden, as many other prosperous nations, is presently reassessing its national goals, political culture and collective identity. Newer groups in society are demanding equal treatment, and others whose struggles for recognition are older and unwon, are successfully mobilizing support for political change. Social democratic political hegemony has been eroded and other new political forces are now reinterpreting past political ideas and methods of action and a need for historical perspective. This book analyses the history of Swedish civil society. Social movements and interest organizations have played crucial roles in Sweden. Their history is also Swedish history and concerns struggles for political recognition and welfare state development and cutbacks. Theoretical developments within sociology, social psychology, public choice and political science are combined to enrich the analysis. Some of the theoretical elements used in this book are organizational waves of development, organizational life cycles, political opportunity structure, and topologies of collective action organizations. The book analyzes Swedish civil society history from the Midas to the 1990s. Swedish civil society history is divided into six periods. The role played by collective action organizations in the important developments in politics, society and economy in this one hundred and fifty year period are described, compared and analyzed. The primary focus is the impact of change brought about by these developments on collective action organizations.

Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/nordiskkulturfakta2022-01/ In this research anthology on public subsidy systems for culture in the Nordic region, researchers from each Nordic country contribute with a chapter on the status and challenges of public subsidy systems for culture in their particular country. In addition, a former civil servant with the Nordic Council of Ministers provides descriptions of Nordic co-operation grants for culture, as well as grants in the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland. While the authors have chosen which issues to focus on in their respective chapters, all in one way or another concern themselves with the question of how Nordic welfare policies are reflected in Nordic cultural policies. Book excerpt: This thesis aims to identify and investigate contemporary art organizations in the context of the changing Swedish welfare state. Sweden has been internationally recognized as having one of the most expansive and evolved welfare systems in Europe: however, the past thirty years have evidenced a substantial restructuring and partial dismantling of Sweden's archetypal welfare state. The traditional Swedish model for cultural policy has not only changed significantly in the past few decades, it has also been the subject of heated debate. For some, exclusively public funding for culture is the ideal, but this is only possible in conditions of relative prosperity. At the height of the welfare state, cultural policy was considered to be integral to the public sphere and many national Swedish organizations were built specifically for this system. Cultural policy in Sweden had initially been developed to be a significant part of the nation-state's attempt to define national identity, among both its citizens and international audience; its role today seems more complicated as the legitimacy of the state's role in framing the arts organizations has been challenged. Artists and arts organizations have since had to look in new places for funding; the model of exclusively public funding is now shifting towards a model that also includes private and corporate support. Today, the desire for culture to contribute significantly to Swedish national identity seems to be at odds with the state's growing desire and obligation to engage in international conversations. The current condition marks a noteworthy and complex shift for Swedish cultural policy. The newfound emphasis on the prospect of individual and corporate donors has led to a new crop of art spaces that focus on more commercial endeavors. In examining how contemporary arts organizations in Sweden manifest these political and economic shifts, I study how initiatives that advocate for an expanded economic role for culture both coincide and conflict with the former paradigm found in the welfare state model. It is these efforts that are investigated in this thesis; how can these organizations remain in line with the original welfare state goals, while bolstering their international presence in both the institutional sphere and the art market.
