Book excerpt: Micro, Small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) plays a catalytic role in the development of any economy. MSMEs are considered as nurseries for entrepreneurship and innovation around the globe. India is no exception. MSMEs in India are extensively dispersed across the country and produce around more than 6000 diverse range of products and services. There are more than 63 million MSME units operating in different parts of India. These MSME establishments employ around 11 crore people. Given the dynamic and flexible nature of MSMEs, they are considered an essential sector in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by United Nations. MSMEs have a huge role to play in achievement of SDGs, especially the goals of Poverty Alleviation (Goal 1), Decent Work and Economic Growth (Goal 8) and Industry Innovation and Infrastructure (Goal 9). MSMEs contribution is not restricted to these three goals, they also directly or indirectly help in achieving other goals. In this paper, an attempt has been made to study the role of MSMEs in achieving the SDGs. We have categorized the role of MSMEs by different activity attributes in the achievement of different goals. We have also outlined some suggestive measure which is helpful in making MSMEs more sustainable, which in turn, would help achieve SDGs.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia based on various primary and secondary field surveys. In doing so, the book provides a regional comparison of countries in Asia- Pacific, covering issues such as employment generation, formation of gross domestic product (GDP), export development, development constraints, productivity, and investment. To achieve this, the book analyzes the role of partnerships between MSMEs such as large companies, banks and government institutions, and the role of cooperatives. It also includes studies on women’s entrepreneurship in Indonesia, and also explores the crisis mitigating measures (CMMs) widely adopted by MSMEs affected by financial crises in the past. Finally, the book also examines the development of financial technology (FinTech), and in particular peer-to-peer (P2P) lending and how this can serve as an alternative source of funding for MSMEs in Indonesia. Aspects of this book would be useful to students, researchers, practitioners, and also those interested in economic-related sustainable development goals (SDGs), given the importance the United Nations (UN) has assigned to MSMEs for taking a lead in employment creation, and poverty eradication.

To reach such a goal they also need to become more professional in their outlook and approach. In this way they may be able to deal with the instability, complexity, ambiguity and uncertainty of change; and to cope with the ever increasing pressures brought by change. After outlining what is meant by sustainability and professionalism, some strategies for how SME owner/managers might become more professional by focussing on the development of their own, and their employees, so called soft skills' are offered. The author draws from a range of theories to support the argument.

The BRICS nations, i.e., Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, are a group of emerging countries comprising the highest developmental block of the emerging nations. It is imperative to assess the entrepreneurship policies, strategies, promotional programs and their implications on among others, entrepreneurship funding, economic growth, employment trends. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the entrepreneurship environment and equally steered state funding priorities away from entrepreneurship development support worldwide. This research book assesses the effect that COVID-19 has had on government funding priority, policy interventions and resultant implications on the entrepreneurship environment, economic growth and employment with a focus on BRICS. Readers will gain insight into what entrepreneurship looks like in the BRICS context and how it has been affected by COVID-19, indicating how the BRICS nations are likely to move forward to further strengthen entrepreneurship. This edited volume will be of interest to researchers, academics, practitioners, and advanced students in the fields of entrepreneurship, innovation, strategy, international relations, multilateralism, and economic development.

Furthermore, the traditional constraints of small and medium enterprises, such as geographic operations, are now being dissolved by technological developments. This means that there are new opportunities for SMEs, and their fundamental principles are being redefined: the aims, competencies, strategy, management, practice, and scope of these businesses are changing, with wide-ranging implications. This is the first part of a two volume work that incorporates scientific chapters on SME business theory and practice. Authors provide a balanced perspective of the present and future of SMEs across all business disciplines, including management, strategy, marketing, economics, and finance. While Volume II explores external issues such as contextual forces, the effects of the financial crisis, and macro-economic effects, this first volume focuses on the individual SME and internal issues such as innovation, quality, and digitization.

Book excerpt: Following the rapid development of connected technologies, which are now highly sophisticated and spread across the globe, Society 5.0 has emerged and brought with it a dramatic societal shift. In 1998, Kodak, the world leader in photographic film, had 170,000 employees. It thus seemed unthinkable that just 3 years later, the majority of people would stop taking photographs to paper film and that Kodak would have disappeared. These are the stakes of this new society that is taking shape. This book, which does not seek to critique current politics, management or marketing literature, aims to fight against the excesses of this often-misunderstood Society 5.0 and to present the ideas and associated technologies that comprise it, all working towards societal improvement. Among these technologies, artificial intelligence, robotics, digital platforms and 3D printing are undoubtedly the most important, and thus receive the greatest focus.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a qualitative desk research. The research's goal is to enhance the understanding of important influence of Indonesia Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) among G20 member countries. Using ten design principles for industrial policy by Rodrik (2004), this research identified how SMEs could be a big influence for Indonesia's economic sustainable development. A survey by OECD informed that Indonesia is in the fourth position for its Growth Domestic Product (GDP) and economic development among G20 member countries. The SMEs' development contains with Rodrik's model, one of ten designs is to give incentive programs to subsidize SMEs, so they can improve their productivity and opportunities. Government of Indonesia has given incentives since 2007 to help Indonesia's SMEs activities. The contribution SMEs to GDP has increased from 57.84% to 60.34% in the last five years per 2016. Those facts lead to the conclusion that in achieving sustainable economic development, Indonesia should constantly determine to push the growth of SMEs. Some lacks are still happened. But, by giving more innovative programs and implement supportive policies, the role of Indonesia in G20 will be stronger and the long-term effect will strengthen Indonesia's SMEs.

Over time, more and more small business owners emerged and organised their own settings to sustain business activities.Contemporary times challenge emerging economies — like India — to adopt entrepreneurship in order to boost its economy. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the preferred way of addressing these challenges; however, the ecosystem required to promote these MSMEs poses significant challenges and requires change to be sustainable. This book examines original case studies, quantitative studies and qualitative research highlighting the organisation of new business, reflecting a wide range of sectors across India. The book offers new insights to budding entrepreneurs to help organise new and established firms to infuse entrepreneurial intentions among the workforce.
