Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in agriculture is increasingly important. E-Agriculture is an emerging field focusing on the enhancement of agricultural and rural development through improved information and communication processes. More specifically, e-Agriculture involves the conceptualization, design, development, evaluation and application of innovative ways to use information and communication technologies (ICT) in the rural domain, with a primary focus on agriculture.ICT promises a fundamental change in all aspects of our lives, including knowledge dissemination, social interaction, economic and business practices, political engagement, media, education, health, leisure and entertainment. ICTs are most natural allies to facilitate the outreach of Agricultural Extension system in the country. Despite large, well-educated, well-trained and well-organized Agricultural extension manpower, around 60% of farmers in the country still remain un-reached, not served by any extension agency or functionary.Information is vital to tackle climate change effects: for this reason, a shift is needed in the agriculture sector to disseminate appropriate knowledge at the right time to the ones who are at the frontline in the battle: the farmers, in both developed and developing countries. At the same time, information per se is not enough, but appropriate communications systems are needed to ensure that information come to farmers in an effective, accurate and clear way.The present papers tries to capture some of the ICT initiatives in agricultural sector, with reference to Indian agriculture.

However, Indian farmers still suffer from the absence of information access. Farmers require timely information on weather conditions, sowing time, the markets, etc. The role of information and communications technology (ICT) could efficiently address the concerns of farmers stationed even at remote locations around the country. However, low literacy levels, cost of computers, and poor communications infrastructure make it impossible for many farmers to directly adopt ICT. This calls for institutional efforts to provide ICT-based services to farmers. This book contains 11 research papers which provide deep insights into the various dimensions of the application of ICT to India's agriculture.

Book excerpt: Enthusiasm amongst international development agencies about harnessing the potential of information and communications technologies (ICTs) for development has generated questionning of the impact and sustainability of such interventions. By presenting the findings of research specifically designed to measure impact on livelihoods, Strengthening Rural Livelihoods offers new evidence for the development benefits of ICTs. The book asks if ICTs enabled farmers to sell beyond local markets and at better prices, and whether there have been social gains in linking geographically disparate households and social networks. The authors have provided significant new insights into how to overcome the challenges of mainstreaming ICTs into rural livelihoods and more effectively measuring its effects. This book will appeal to academics, civil society organizations, practitioners and students who are interested in what works and what doesn't work when applying ICTs to rural livelihoods.

Ever since people have grown crops, raised livestock, and caught fish, they have sought information from one another. Today, ICT represents a tremendous opportunity for rural populations to improve productivity, to enhance food and nutrition security, to access markets, and to find employment opportunities in a revitalized sector. ICT has unleashed incredible potential to improve agriculture, and it has found a foothold even in poor smallholder farms. ICT in Agriculture, Updated Edition is the revised version of the popular ICT in Agriculture e-Sourcebook, first launched in 2011 and designed to support practitioners, decision makers, and development partners who work at the intersection of ICT and agriculture. Our hope is that this updated Sourcebook will be a practical guide to understanding current trends, implementing appropriate interventions, and evaluating the impact of ICT interventions in agricultural programs.

Book excerpt: The rise of Information and Communication Technology has leveled the field of progress and development. No more development could be confined to a single place, however subtle it may be of. The rural India is lagging no way behind in adopting the usage of ICT tools. Mobile phones, TV sets, radios why even computers and laptops are entering their scaffolds in fervent pace. It could be very well said that agriculture, though loosing its sheen, still occupies predominant position in rural hinterlands. Any amount of growth is not possible in rural lands and populace alike with the links to agriculture getting severed. It could very well be hypothesized that rural India could develop if agriculture could touch some higher notches. This paper was intended to find how ICT tools could be better utilized to deliver farmers and thereby farming better. An attempt has been made to find out how far the farmers use and utilize ICT tools for the agricultural activities. Moreover attempt has also been made to bring out the difficulties of farmers in accessing ICT tools to better their prospects from agriculture. Since marketing has become the major driving force in mapping and sequencing a cropping activity, this paper also tries to bring out the scope of ICT tools in bettering the remuneration of farming community. In short, the paper tries to pinpoint that only when farming becomes a viable proposition rural development would be possible and sustainable.
