Les inconsistances entre les configurations sonores et leur production orthographique sont nombreuses. Elles concernent notamment les consonnes qui peuvent être présentées en format simple ou double. Selon l'hypothèse de l'auto-apprentissage formulée par Share en 1995, le décodage est la procédure qui permet la formation des représentations orthographiques car elle sollicite l'attention des enfants sur l'identité et l'ordre des lettres. Cela suppose que la structuration du stock orthographique se fait lorsque l'enfant identifie les formes orthographiques non familières rencontrées au cours de la lecture de tous les jours, et indépendamment de l'enseignement explicite de l'orthographe. Ce mémoire a étudié le rôle du décodage phonologique dans la mémorisation des doublements de consonnes.Nous avons observé l'apprentissage orthographique de huit pseudo-mots lus à haute voix par des élèves de CM2. Certains pseudo-mots contenaient des doublements de consonnes fréquents et d'autres contenaient de doublements rares. Les résultats de l'expérience avec un groupe de 60 enfants tout-venant mettent en évidence un auto-apprentissage des pseudo-mots, avec un effet de la fréquence du doublement de consonnes sur la mémorisation de ces items. Les résultats d'un groupe d'enfants dysorthographiques révèlent un auto-apprentissage plus faible et une sensibilité amoindrie à la fréquence du doublement de consonnes.

La présente étude a pour but de montrer quel rôle jouent ces connaissances orthographiques implicites dans la mémorisation de nouvelles formes orthographiques. Cette recherche, menée chez des enfants de CM2, se base sur la théorie de l'auto-apprentissage de l'orthographe par la voie phonologique. La présence de lettres muettes empêchant la correspondance graphème phonème stricte, influence l'apprentissage des formes orthographiques proposées dans l'étude. Les résultats suggèrent qu'un auto-apprentissage orthographique par le décodage phonologique est possible en français. Toutefois, l'apprentissage est modulé par le fait que les enfants s'appuient sur la fréquence d'apparition des bigrammes dans la langue pour orthographier de nouveaux mots, en particulier quand ils contiennent des lettres muettes.

Part II, Literacy Acquisition From a Cross-Linguistic Perspective, makes direct comparisons of literacy acquisition in English and other orthographic systems. The overall conclusion that emerges from these eight chapters is that the depth of an orthographic system does influence literacy acquisition primarily by slowing down the acquisition of reading skills. Even so, studies show that dyslexic readers can be found across all orthographic systems whether shallow or deep, which shows that dyslexia also has internal cognitive and biological components.
