Fitting a new technology into existing political institutions and social habits, these two nations became inexorably involved in industrial and commercial rivalry that eventually escalated into the armed conflict of 1914. Based on many years of research in French and German archives, this study examines the adaptation of railroads and steam engines from Britain to the continent of Europe after the Napoleonic age. A fascinating example of how the same technology, borrowed at the same time from the same source, was assimilated differently by the two continental powers, this book offers a groundbreaking analysis of the crossroads of technology and politics during the first Industrial Revolution.

Book excerpt: Corporate scandals and lack of confidence in our largest institutions mean that corporate social responsibility (CSR) now matters more than ever. Encroaching on CSR are concepts such as corporate sustainability and corporate citizenship, and older concerns with business ethics, business in society and the ethical corporation. This significantly revised and updated version of The Planetary Bargain explains the relations among these concepts and reflects the author's new ideas and their new context. Enterprises across the world are waking up to the need for social responsibility towards shareholders and potential investors, managers and other employees, customers, business partners and contractors or suppliers, the natural environment and the communities within which they operate, including national governments and non-governmental organizations. Drawing on case studies of international companies and analysis of research from the past two decades, The Planetary Bargain shows how corporations can preserve their profitability while treating all stakeholders ethically and responsibly. It suggests a cooperative CSR strategy which creates prosperity for corporations and for the people they serve. It presents the case for a worldwide agreement, or 'planetary bargain', between private and public sectors, arguing that it is good for business and essential for future prosperity and stability.

Book excerpt: The book, NOTES FROM THE JUNGLE, was begun by its author, Marcos (an anthropologist), in the 1990's along the banks of the Amazon River. The author presents his work in the form of a correspondence, a long letter, between himself and his reader. Due to the experiences of travel and study in his life he tries to explain the cultural reasons that often keep humans apart and why values are so influenced by other elements of culture. These values often remain incompatible between cultures leading to misunderstandings, hostility and war. His prognosis for mankinds future, perhaps controversial, is poor. But, he does offer a possible way forward.

Book excerpt: Tom Peters--brilliant, original, and perhaps the most inspiring and listened-to business thinker of our time--has a lot on his mind these days. And he wants to share it in The Circle of Innovation. The world of business is in a permanent state of flux, he argues, a state of chaos in which constant innovation is the only survival strategy--for the individual and for the organization. And he presents here a lifesaving handbook--both provocative and practical--designed to turn any organization into a perpetual innovation machine. In 400 seminars in 47 states and 22 countries in the last five years, Peters has reexamined, refined, and reinvented his views on innovation. Now he brings those seminars--and his passion--to the reader in a landmark book. It is meant, he writes, to both "terrify" and "enlighten." These are "times of matchless peril for those who fail to grasp the nettle...and times of matchless opportunity for those who do." To keep us alert, limber, and ready for action, he provokes and cajoles in chapter after chapter. Among his institutions and revelations: We Are All Michelangelos. He shows how to transform every "jobholder" into a full-fledged businessperson. All Value Comes from the Professional Services. How to convert sluggish staff units into Vital Centers of Intellectual Capital Accumulation. The System is the Solution. How to build great systems--which go far beyond nuts and bolts. Create Waves of Lust. Quality is not the automatic advantage it recently was. There is a pressing need to reverse the rising tide of product and service "commoditization." Tommy Hilfiger Knows. In a crowded marketplace, branding is far more important than ever before. It's a Woman's World. How to capitalize on the fact that women purchase/are purchasing agents for well over half of U.S. commercial and consumer goods. Little Things Are the Only Things. As the Blight of Sameness encroaches on market after market, design is often the best tool in services or manufacturing for sustainable differentiation. We're Here to Live Life Out Loud. Why transformational leaders of the future must have laser-like focus, tell the truth, and live on the lunatic fringe. The hallmarks of Tom Peters legend are an insatiable curiosity, an agile intellect, a pragmatic perspective, and an uncanny ability to gauge the global zeitgeist. These qualities are all brought to bear as Peters sets out to engage, enrage, and ultimately empower his readers, amid forces that are reshaping not only business but every aspect of human experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book does propose Policies for a President, and the author hopes that the candidates for that office will take heed, 2008 being the year of an important and highly contested Presidential election. But, as the subtitle A Manifesto for 2008 and Beyond suggests, the message is not confined to this year, but looks ahead to the America of the future. More important than the offer of advice to candidates is the message to the American people - to every voter: Take careful account of the policies and the goals that you really want the President to pursue. What is your vision for America, for yourself, your children and grandchildren? What policies of a President will lead us in that direction? How can they be implemented? And what policies and actions of Presidents in the past have carried us forward in the right direction, and what policies and actions have gone astray and set us back? In seeking to find answers to those questions, the histories of Presidential policies and actions in various fields are reviewed and analyzed. At many times and in many cases those policies and actions achieved or contributed to advances in our democracy and in our lives and happiness. Through most of our history America has achieved great success. It began with the courage and wisdom of our forefathers who rejected monarchial dominance and created a republic of the people, represented by a Congress of their own chioce. The Constitution established by our forefathers has withstood the tests of time and conflict, including the Civil War which resulted in amendments to the Constitution introducing new levels of freedom and democracy. The struggle to bring those new freedoms to fruition for everyone is not yet fully accomplished; it survived a great economic depression and a devastating World War, and still goes on. That struggle for the further perfection of our democracy now faces new challenges from war, terrorism, the spread of nuclear and rocket technology, the rising economies around the world rivaling our own, and possibly from climate changes induced by human activites. Those are all subjects explored in this book. They have all been the subject of Presidential policies for many decades. The policies of the present administration, coming to an end in 2008, are a particular target of this book, and are herein disapproved in many respects. That is not to say that previous administrations are given unfettered applause; on the contrary there is plenty of blame to go around. As the author says in his preface, you may disagree with his ideas or his conclusions, and his hope and expectation is only that you will give serious thought to these important matters. The elements of Presidential policy earning the greatest disapprobation by this author lie in the area of the expression and use of military power by the United States. In particular, as set forth in Chapters 1 and 2, the author decries: the assertion that the executive power of the President supercedes the legislative power of the Congress; the concept that the designation of the President as Commander in Chief in any way confers upon him a power to commit armed forces of the United States into combat; the militarization of our foreign policy; the denigration of the United Nations and the disregard of our solemn commitments under the Charter; the very concept of preventative war; the growing dominance of a military-industrial complex; and the belief that military action is an appropriate or effective response to terrorism in the world. In Chapter 3 the book turns to economic and social policies, considering various aspects of governmental involvement in social welfare, the regulation of business activities, and taxation. Foreign trade and foreign aid are also considered. And the author offers comments on aspects of cultural and religious biases affecting those subjects. Chapter 4 is concerned with scientific and environme
