Book Synopsis For the Love of Horror by : Michael Arruda
Download or read book For the Love of Horror written by Michael Arruda and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FOR THE LOVE OF HORROR is Stoker-nominated author Michael Arruda's first short story collection. It contains fifteen short stories, seven reprints and eight original stories, plus a wraparound story that ties everything together. It's written with the old Amicus anthology horror movies in mind, films like DR. TERRORS HOUSE OF HORRORS (1965) and THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD (1971). It’s a love story, but it’s actually more of an anti-love story. The folks in these stories make more mistakes and handle relationships in such appalling ways—well, let’s put it this way, if you do the opposite of what most of the characters do in these stories, you’ll be in good shape. Then again, you can do everything right, and your relationship can still go down the toilet. It’s the nature of the relationship beast, and it’s one of the themes of FOR THE LOVE OF HORROR. Men and women want to be involved with each other. Men and women need to be involved with each other. But more often than not, it’s not a pretty process. And sometimes it’s downright sinister.

Book excerpt: A novel of suspense, intrigue and technological secrets. The aftermath of Desert Storm left a horrid suspicion of something gone terribly awry with our air combat capability. The success of Desert Storm was blinding and so was the hint of disaster that lay in wait for the next armed conflict. What did the evidence show in the Iraq conflict that so frightened those in the know? How could they prove their suspicions? Even more important, how could they solve the puzzle and find an answer that would allow our air combat power to remain effective? Curt Thomas, one time CIA radar scientist now a little known professor, is tasked to follow the leads and decipher the secrets of the new and awesome radar/missile system that must exist. He was once on the track of something akin but never could make it a working idea. Now he must search intensively for the key that he missed before. Learn why Thomas is led to China and to the keys he must have to protect our aircraft from certain death in the future. Download or read book Tsunami! written by Walter C. Dudley and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1998-11-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 1, 1946, shortly after sunrise, the town of Hilo on the island of Hawai'i was devastated by a series of giant waves. Traveling 2,300 miles from the Aleutian Islands in less than five hours, the waves struck without warning and claimed 159 lives. Fourteen years later, on May 22, 1960, a massive earthquake occurred off of the coast of Chile. The earthquake generated giant waves that sped across the Pacific at 442 miles per hour, reaching Hilo in just fifteen hours. The first wave to hit the town was a modest four feet higher than normal, the second nine feet. Before the third wave could arrive, a tidal phenomenon known as a bore smashed into the Hilo bayfront, with thirty-five foot waves that wrenched buildings off their foundations. That day several city blocks were swept clean of all structures and 61 people died. The first edition of Tsunami!, published in 1988, provided readers with a complete examination of the tsunami phenomenon in Hawai'i. This second edition adds many eyewitness accounts of the tsunamis of 1946 and 1960 and expands its coverage to include major tsunamis in the Mediterranean and off the coasts of Japan, Chile, Indonesia, Fiji, Alaska, California, Newfoundland, and the Caribbean, as well as the 1998 devastation in Papua New Guinea. Dramatic photographs and accounts of experiencing a tsunami firsthand are placed within the framework of the how and why of tsunamis, our scientific understanding of these phenomena, and the current status of the Tsunami Warning System, which is widely used to forecast and measure tsunamis and prepare coastal areas for potentially deadly tsunami strikes.

Book Synopsis Asphalt to Ecosystems by : Sharon Gamson Danks
Download or read book Asphalt to Ecosystems written by Sharon Gamson Danks and published by New Village Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case Studies from North America, Scandinavia, Japan, and Great Britain demonstrate natural outdoor teaching environment that support hand-on learning in science, math, language, and art in ways that nurture healthy imagination and socialization Asphalt to Ecosystems is a compelling color guidebook for designing and building natural schoolyard environments that enhance childhood learning and play experiences while providing connection with the natural world. With this book, Danks broadens our notion of what a well-designed schoolyard should be, taking readers on a journey from traditional, ordinary grassy fields and asphalt, to explore the vibrant and growing movement to "green" school grounds in the United States and around the world. This book documents exciting green schoolyard examples from almost 150 schools in 11 countries, illustrating that a great many things are possible on school grounds when they are envisioned as outdoor classrooms for hands-on learning and play. The book's 500 vivid, color photographs showcase some of the world's most innovative green schoolyards including: edible gardens with fruit trees, vegetables, chickens, honey bees, and outdoor cooking facilities; wildlife habitats with prairie grasses and ponds, or forest and desert ecosystems; schoolyard watershed models, rainwater catchment systems and waste-water treatment wetlands; renewable energy systems that power landscape features, or the whole school; waste-as-a-resource projects that give new life to old materials in beautiful ways; K-12 curriculum connections for a wide range of disciplines from science and math to art and social studies; creative play opportunities that diversify school ground recreational options and encourage children to run, hop, skip, jump, balance, slide, and twirl, as well as explore the natural world first hand. The book grounds these examples in a practical framework that illustrates simple landscape design choices that all schools can use to make their schoolyards more comfortable, enjoyable and beautiful, and describes a participatory design process that schools can use to engage their school communities in transforming their own asphalt into ecosystems.
