Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Alan Gribben, a foremost Twain scholar, made waves in 1980 with the publication of Mark Twain's Library, a study that exposed for the first time the breadth of Twain's reading and influences. Prior to Gribben's work, much of Twain's reading history was assumed lost, but through dogged searching Gribben was able to source much of Twain's library. Mark Twain's Literary Resources is a much-expanded examination of Twain's library and readings. Volume I included Gribben's reflections on the work involved in cataloging Twain's reading and analysis of Twain's influences and opinions. This volume, long awaited, is an in-depth and comprehensive accounting of Twain's literary history. Each work read or owned by Twain is listed, along with information pertaining to editions, locations, and more. Gribben also includes scholarly annotations that explain the significance of many works, making this volume of Mark Twain's Literary Resources one of the most important additions to our understanding of America's greatest author.
Book Synopsis Ores to Metals by : James E. Fell, Jr.
Download or read book Ores to Metals written by James E. Fell, Jr. and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive treatment of the smelting industry of Colorado, originally published in 1979, is now back in print with a new preface by the author. Packed with fascinating statistics and mining data, Ores to Metals details the people, technologies, and business decisions that have shaped the smelting industry in the Rockies. Although mining holds more of the glamour for those in and interested in the minerals industry, smelters have continuously played a critical role in the industry’s evolution since their introduction in Colorado in the 1860s. At that time, miners desperately needed new technology to recover gold and silver from ores resistant to milling. Beginning as small independent enterprises, progressing to larger integrated firms working in urban centers, and finally following a trend toward mergers, the entire industry was absorbed into one large holding company—the American Smelting and Refining Company. Over time, fortunes were won and lost, business success was converted to political success, and advances were made in science and metallurgy. Drawing on archival material, Fell expertly presents the triumphs and troubles of the entrepreneurs who built one of the great industries of the West.

Book excerpt: Harry Orchard devoted most of his early life to lawlessness and crime on a fantasically large scale. As the hired assassin of the Western Federation of Miners, he blasted a trail of violence through the West, ending in the 1905 bomb-slaying of a former Idaho governor. Orchard's skill with dynamite and the fearful results of this talent produced some colorful pages of Americana that, up to now, have escaped the history books. This is more than just the story of Harry Orchard, however. It is also the story of the Western Federation of Miners, of William "Big Bill" Harwood, a onetime idol of American labor, and the organization of the Industrial Workers of the World by Haywood before he fled to the Soviet Union. Stewart Halbrook writes of the labor conditions that led to violence in the hardrock, first in the mines of Northern Idaho and later in the Cripple Creek region and the San Juans of Colorado. Time and again Orchard sparked new violence in the hope of winning the approval of Haywood and the other union leaders. By the time Orchard had killed twenty men or more, there was so much fear, hate, and violence in the hardrock mining towns that the Western Federation of Miners was doomed. Harry Orchard's last assignment, the dynamiting of former Governor Steunenberg of Idaho, put the Western Federation of Miners out of business. Orchard was persuaded to confess his crimes and turn state's evidence. In one of the great courtroom dramas of all times, Clarenece Darrow defended Haywood and one of the prosecutors was William E. Borah, then newly elected to the United States Senate.
