This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several coastal parks, including Cabrillo National Monument (CNM) and Channel Islands National Park (CINP), have begun intertidal monitoring programs to establish baseline datasets of their marine resources and to report changes in these resources (Davis and Halvorson 1996, Davis 2005). Monitoring intertidal assemblages allows changes to be tracked within and between communities over seasonal and yearly time scales. Such monitoring is critical for making informed management decisions.

Download or read book Living Marine Legacy of Gwaii Haanas I: Marine Plant Baseline to 1999 and Plant-related Management Issues written by N. A. Sloan and published by Halifax, N.S. : Parks Canada, Atlantic Region. This book was released on 2000 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first in a series of baseline marine biological inventories for the Queen Charlotte Islands archipelago including Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve. It focuses only on seaweeds, seagrasses, and marine lichens and begins with an overview of these three types of plants along with their traditional use by the Haida people. Inventory data collection methods are then described and results are presented in the form of species lists and dot maps showing geographic distribution of species. Finally, marine plant issues in Gwaii Haanas management are discussed, including the need for near-shore marine environmental monitoring, kelp forest ecosystem issues (kelp deforestation, the role of sea otters and red sea urchins, kelp forest-associated fisheries), and visitor impacts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You can't really know the place where you live until you know the shapes and origins of the land around you. To feel truly at home in the Bay Area, read Doris Sloan's intriguing stories of this region's spectacular, quirky landscapes."—Hal Gilliam, author of Weather of the San Francisco Bay Region "This is a fascinating look at some of the world's most complex and engaging geology. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an understanding of the beautiful landscape and dynamic geology of the Bay Area."—Mel Erskine, geological consultant "This accessible summary of San Francisco Bay Area geology is particularly timely. We are living in an age where we must deal with our impact on our environment and the impact of the environment on us. Earthquake hazards, and to a lesser extent landslide hazards, are well known, but the public also needs to be aware of other important engineering and environmental impacts and geologic resources. This book will allow Bay Area residents to make more intelligent decisions about the geological issues affecting their lives."—John Wakabayashi, geological consultant
Book Synopsis Indian Conquistadors by : Laura E. Matthew
Download or read book Indian Conquistadors written by Laura E. Matthew and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-02-13 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conquest of the New World would hardly have been possible if the invading Spaniards had not allied themselves with the indigenous population. This book takes into account the role of native peoples as active agents in the Conquest through a review of new sources and more careful analysis of known but under-studied materials that demonstrate the overwhelming importance of native allies in both conquest and colonial control. In Indian Conquistadors, leading scholars offer the most comprehensive look to date at native participation in the conquest of Mesoamerica. The contributors examine pictorial, archaeological, and documentary evidence spanning three centuries, including little-known eyewitness accounts from both Spanish and native documents, paintings (lienzos) and maps (mapas) from the colonial period, and a new assessment of imperialism in the region before the Spanish arrival. This new research shows that the Tlaxcalans, the most famous allies of the Spanish, were far from alone. Not only did native lords throughout Mesoamerica supply arms, troops, and tactical guidance, but tens of thousands of warriors—Nahuas, Mixtecs, Zapotecs, Mayas, and others—spread throughout the region to participate with the Spanish in a common cause. By offering a more balanced account of this dramatic period, this book calls into question traditional narratives that emphasize indigenous peoples’ roles as auxiliaries rather than as conquistadors in their own right. Enhanced with twelve maps and more than forty illustrations, Indian Conquistadors opens a vital new line of research and challenges our understanding of this important era.
