Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book might be considered a sequel to or simply a continuation of Donovan Shilling’s Made in Rochester book. The contributions made by Rochester companies to our local and national economy stretches far beyond this book and the 165 that were chosen for the original book. This could be volume two in an ongoing series of books on the companies that have made Rochester such a great place in which to live and work. As with Made in Rochester, much of the material in this book came from Donovan Shilling’s vast collection of products, company photos and advertising material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A city's rich transportation history comes alive in Rochester's Transportation Heritage. Here, the evolution of transportation in Rochester is documented in vintage images from the 1890s through the 1950s. Included are photographs of Charles Lindbergh's visit to Rochester; images of the earliest locomotives and grand railroad stations; a picture of a trotting mare racing a lady bicyclist at the old Driving Park racetrack; views of boats on the Erie Canal; and shots of the city's first airplanes. Rochester's Transportation Heritage revives the horse-drawn trolley car days and the lost subway era. Rare images of the Regas auto and the cars that were destroyed by Rochester's 1932 tornado complete the story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American cities and towns have always prided themselves on their grand avenues. The social elite and industrial captains often transformed normal thoroughfares into magnificent promenades lined with mansions to showcase their wealth. Post-Civil War America experienced a burst of this activity, but Rochester, America's first true boomtown, had already set its sights on a grand avenue as early as 1840. The nouveau riche were anxious to establish a prestigious social colony befitting their stature. Using local and national architects, landscapers, and craftsmen, they transformed East Avenue from a crudely hacked pioneer lane into one of the grandest approaches to any city in the world. Although somewhat altered, it is still Rochester's most beautiful street and remains one of Monroe County's most spectacular features.

Book Synopsis Sales & Celebrations by : Sarah Elvins
Download or read book Sales & Celebrations written by Sarah Elvins and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the two world wars, the retail world experienced tremendous changes. New forms of competition, expanded networks of communication and transportation, and the proliferation of manufactured goods posed challenges to department store and small shopkeeper alike. In western New York, and in Buffalo and Rochester in particular, retailers were a crucial part of urban life, acting as cultural brokers and civic leaders. They were also cultivators of area pride. Even as they adopted the latest merchandising techniques or stocked the newest items, merchants emphasized their local roots and their ability to put a local spin on national trends and innovations. Regional identity became a powerful selling tool not only during the prosperity of the 1920s but also through the economic crisis of the Great Depression. Sales and Celebrations explains how local traditions and institutions affected the evolution of American consumer culture. It expands our understanding of American consumerism, demonstrating that local particularities and loyalties could often coexist with, and occasionally challenge, the spread of mass consumption. In her award-winning study, Professor Sarah Elvins provides new insight into the relationship between America's largest metropolises and its smaller centers. Retailers in Buffalo and Rochester did not simply imitate the practices of their counterparts in Manhattan and Chicago; they highlighted their unique ability to serve the wants and needs of their particular markets. By drawing attention to this persistent power of the local, Sales and Celebrations illuminates a neglected aspect of the story of American culture in the interwar period.
