Book excerpt: Vinyl LP (picture disc) plus booklet.Created during the exhibition David Shrigley: Laughterhouse at DESTE Foundation Project Space, Slaughterhouse, Hydra, Greece (19 June - 30 September 2018).The goat sounds in this piece of music are taken from the documentary film Shrigley made for the exhibition Laughterhouse. The goats in the documentary were filmed in Malta and Scotland, and were a response to the fact that the DESTE Foundation Project Space in Hydra was formally a slaughterhouse; something that hadn't really been made reference to by other artists who have exhibited there. Both dark and funny, Goat Music captures the humour of short video clips found on the internet with a more sobering revelation on what would have happened in the building before it became a space in which to show art.Published in an edition of 1000 copies by DESTE.Co-published by Koenig Books, DESTE and Karen Marta.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At once practical and creative, this book was feminism's Whole Earth Catalog Originally published in 1973, The New Woman's Survival Catalog is a seminal survey of the second-wave feminist effort across the US. Edited by Kirsten Grimstad and Susan Rennie in just five months, The New Woman's Survival Catalog makes a nod to Stewart Brand's influential Whole Earth Catalog, mapping a vast network of feminist alternative cultural activity in the 1970s. Grimstad and Rennie set out on a two-month road trip in the summer of 1973, meeting and interviewing a range of organizations and individuals, and gathering vital information on everything from arts groups to bookstores and independent presses, health, parenting and rape crisis centers and educational, legal and financial resources. "These projects express a rejection of the values of existing institutional structures," Grimstad and Rennie wrote, "and, unlike the hip male counterculture, represent an active attempt to reshape culture through changing values and consciousness." Arranged in themed sections on art, communications, work and money, child care, self-help, self-defense and activism, The New Woman's Survival Catalog provides crucial insight into feminist initiatives and activism nationwide during the Women's Movement. It includes a "Making the Book" section that details the publication's production. Kirsten Grimstad and Susan Rennie are the coeditors of The New Woman's Survival Catalog and The New Woman's Survival Sourcebook (1975). They went on to cofound Chrysalis: A Magazine of Women's Culture, published out of the Woman's Building in downtown Los Angeles from 1977 to 1981. Grimstad is currently Co-Chair of Undergraduate Studies at Antioch University, Los Angeles; she is the author of The Modern Revival of Gnosticism and Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus (2002). Rennie taught social sciences at Union Institute & University in Cincinnati, worked as a women's health activist and now lives in Venice, California.

Book excerpt: On the work of three contemporary artist's-book publishers who have developed fresh ways of broaching politics in publishing This book documents Publishing as Practice, a residency at Ulises--a curatorial platform based in Philadelphia--that explores publishing as an incubator for new forms of editorial, curatorial and artistic practice. Over the course of two years, three publishers activated Ulises as an exhibition space and public programming hub, engaging the public through workshops, discussions and projects. Residents included Hardworking Goodlooking, the publishing arm of Philippines-based, social-practice platform The Office of Culture and Design; Dominica, an imprint run by Martine Syms dedicated to exploring Blackness as a topic, reference, marker and audience in visual culture; and Bidoun, a non-profit organization focused on art and culture from the Middle East and its diasporas. The book features a preface by David Senior, an essay by Gee Wesley and Ulises Carrión's 1975 publishing manifesto "The New Art of Making Books," alongside documentation of the works produced.

Book excerpt: Tiré du site Internet d'Amazon.com (Vol. 1): "A culture's body image, as refracted through its art, will usually provide a more telling account of its preoccupations than the most explicit political art; it seems that cultural symptoms leak more readily into depictions of the body than into more overt statements. This is especially true in periods of heightened alienation, when the solitary figure gains poignancy, but bodies register their eras in many ways: the signifiers of opulence, imperialism, fashion, social decay, sexual convention and anxiety can all be readily inscribed onto the human form in art--and indeed, always have been. Fractured Figure projects our millennial moment as one of fragile bodies pitched against a restless, dysphasic backdrop, in which terrorism and global warming impinge as daily realities. It draws on the world-renowned contemporary collection of Dakis Joannou, who, in collaboration with Jeffrey Deitch, has previously organized shows such as Artificial Nature and Post Human, in which similar concerns have arisen. Here, in works by Chris Ofili, David Altmejd, Richard Prince, Urs Fischer, Pawel Althamer, Ashley Bickerton, Barnaby Furnas and others, the figure is shown as un-idealized and compellingly mortal--situated in a realm that we will immediately recognize as our own."

Book excerpt: A multipart installation on the island of Hydra exploring mythic themes of earth and sky In 2019, multidisciplinary artist Kiki Smith (born 1954) was invited to present a site-specific project at the DESTE Foundation Project Space in Hydra, a former slaughterhouse perched on the edge of the sea. Drawing on maritime history, mythology, astronomy and site-specific anthropology, Smith combined naturalistic and fantastic elements into a multipiece composition that reflects the lived and imagined memory of both the slaughterhouse--a stage for sacrifices--and the Hydra region itself. Alongside photographs of the installation and texts by Maggie Wright and Nadja Argyropoulou, Kiki Smith: Memorypresents documentation of Smith's process for this project, which draws on a variety of mediums including sculpture, textiles and drawing.
