Book Synopsis The Gods of the City by : Anthony J. Steinhoff
Download or read book The Gods of the City written by Anthony J. Steinhoff and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent scholarship has criticized the assumption that European modernity was inherently secular. Yet, we remain poorly informed about religion's fate in the nineteenth-century big city, the very crucible of the modern condition. Drawing on extensive archival research and investigations into Protestant ecclesiastical organization, church-state relations, liturgy, pastoral care, associational life, and interconfessional relations, this study of Strasbourg following Germany's annexation of Alsace-Lorraine in 1871 shows how urbanization not only challenged the churches, but spurred them to develop new, forward-looking, indeed, urban understandings of religious community and piety. The work provides new insights into what it meant for Imperial Germany to identify itself as "Protestant" and it provocatively identifies the European big city as an agent for sacralization, and not just secularization.

Book Synopsis Capitalism, Politics, and Railroads in Prussia, 1830-1870 by : James M. Brophy
Download or read book Capitalism, Politics, and Railroads in Prussia, 1830-1870 written by James M. Brophy and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the politics of moneymaking in the railroad industry and the relationship of railroad entrepreneurs with the conservative Prussian state during the industry's critical phase of growth and consolidation. James M. Brophy explores the pivotal role the business politics of the railroad industry played in Prussian industrialization, state building, and bourgeois political culture. Using the railroad industry as the basis on which to construct a larger argument about the role of the capitalist class in reconstituting the Prussian-German state, Brophy breaks new ground in locating the informal, bureaucratic, and parliamentary political spheres businessmen infiltrated and the legislative issues they influenced. Capitalism, Politics, and Railroads in Prussia, 1830-1870 reassesses how business activity shaped political culture, and throws new light on the impact of the economy on state organizations. This study will interest scholars of modern German and European history, business history, and the history of the railroad, as well as political science and economics.
Book Synopsis The German Invasion of Norway, April 1940 by : Geirr H. Haarr
Download or read book The German Invasion of Norway, April 1940 written by Geirr H. Haarr and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 481 pages. The first operation in which the air force, army, and navy worked closely together, Operation Weserübung included the first dive-bomber attack to sink a major warship and the first carrier task-force operations. Based on primary sources from British, German, and Norwegian archives, this book gives a balanced account of the reasons behind the invasion and showcases an unrivaled collection of photographs. As the definitive study of Germany's first and last major seaborne invasion, it offers a close look at an important but often neglected aspect of World War II.
