Book Synopsis New Mexico Vegetation by : William A. Dick-Peddie
Download or read book New Mexico Vegetation written by William A. Dick-Peddie and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993 and now available for the first time in paperback, this book remains one of the few authoritative vegetation compilations for a western state. It is the first comprehensive study of the biological history and evolution of New Mexico's vegetation and includes a detailed account of the distribution of plant communities in the state today. Discussed are the following major types of vegetation: tundra and coniferous forest, woodland and savanna, grassland, scrubland, riparian, and wetlands. For each type, information is provided on the principal plant species. In addition, for each vegetation type special attention is given to describing how plants sharing a common location interact and, in particular, how human activity impacts on each type. Much of New Mexico's vegetation is in some stage of succession as a result of human-initiated disturbances such as fire, logging, and livestock grazing. The book ends with a detailed description of species of special concern and what is being done to preserve examples of vegetation types within the state. A map of the state's vegetation, including types not found on existing maps, accompanies the book. The classifications of vegetation employed here are easily recognizable in the field, which makes them of greater use to the public as well as to resource managers, researchers, and students.

Download or read book Bouquet written by Richard Cady and published by . This book was released on 2021-08 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the summer of 2018 - and the two subsequent blooming seasons - the author, using the camera in his cell phone, took natural but artfully composed wildflower photos on his daily dog walks. It was his purpose to capture the awe and delight he'd experienced over the years since his first exposure to the wildflowers of the Southwest. For the most part, he has used the common names of the flowers in each entry, adding anecdotal information gleaned from his research and his own observations. Although it is as accurate a report on the history, folklore, medicinal uses, and/or botanical makeup of each plant as he can provide, it is not intended to be a scientific survey or an addition to the professional botanical literature. This book is meant for people who - like himself - are transplants to the Southwest, and for those visitors who pour into New Mexico - this branded "Land of Enchantment." Locals who are just beginning to explore the myriad of wildflowers and plants in Northern New Mexico and the surrounds of Santa Fe may also enjoy and learn from the book. Strewn among the various entries, the author has also included poetry, quotations, and some additional photos that he hopes will give the reader a sense of the time and place of his wildflower-gathering.
Book Synopsis Wildflowers of the Western Plains by : Zoe Merriman Kirkpatrick
Download or read book Wildflowers of the Western Plains written by Zoe Merriman Kirkpatrick and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stretching from western Texas and eastern New Mexico up through Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas, and into Canada, the vast western plains often appear sparse and dry to the casual observer. But a closer look, especially after spring rains, uncovers flowers of all colors, sizes, shapes, and fragrances. These forgotten flowers, never before the main focus of a field guide, come into bloom in Wildflowers of the Western Plains. Organized by plant family, the guide presents 186 species of wildflowers, accompanied by vivid color photographs. Each entry includes both the Latin and common names and a description of the plant, flower, fruit, and range. A special feature of the guide is the inclusion of Native American botanical folklore, legends pertaining to wildflowers, and medicinal uses of native plants. The author's personal observations and occasional recipes round out this delightful array of information.
