Book excerpt: At many existing highway bridge locations throughout the United States, the length of need for guardrail required at bridge ends cannot be installed due to conflicts within the existing rights-of-way limits. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 1013: Roadside Barrier Designs near Bridge Rail Ends with Restricted Rights-of-Way: A Guide presents a guide on the application and installation of newly designed short-radius guardrail systems for roadside barriers near bridge rail ends with restricted rights-of-way. Supplemental to the report is NCHRP Web-Only Document 334: Roadside Barrier Designs near Bridge Rail Ends with Restricted Rights-of-Way: A National Survey and Testing Reports, which provides appendices with further details on the literature review, state survey responses, plus crash-test analyses and results.

Book excerpt: Traffic barriers are roadside hardware of various designs and materials which are intended to protect vehicles from such off-the-road hazards as trees, embankments, ravines, signposts, bridge support pillars or abutments, or other hazards. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been concerned with the problem of inadequate traffic barriers for several years. The Safety Board has investigated accidents in which barriers failed, and has made recommendations to the FHWA. Of primary importance among these have been recommendations that the FHWA develop and promulgate mandatory performance standards for traffic barriers. The purpose of such standards would be to require that traffic barrier types be crash-tested to demonstrate their ability to meet a set of established safety criteria. At present, barriers are not required to meet such criteria through crash-testing. The purpose of this report is to review past Safety Board concerns regarding the adequacy of bridge and highway rail systems and to evaluate the FHWA's efforts to develop safer traffic barriers. This study analyzes the results of recent crash-testing sponsored by the FHWA and makes recommendations concerning performance standards for traffic barriers.

Book excerpt: Get a complete look into modern traffic engineering solutions Traffic Engineering Handbook, Seventh Edition is a newly revised text that builds upon the reputation as the go-to source of essential traffic engineering solutions that this book has maintained for the past 70 years. The updated content reflects changes in key industry standards, and shines a spotlight on the needs of all users, the design of context-sensitive roadways, and the development of more sustainable transportation solutions. Additionally, this resource features a new organizational structure that promotes a more functionally-driven, multimodal approach to planning, designing, and implementing transportation solutions. A branch of civil engineering, traffic engineering concerns the safe and efficient movement of people and goods along roadways. Traffic flow, road geometry, sidewalks, crosswalks, cycle facilities, shared lane markings, traffic signs, traffic lights, and more—all of these elements must be considered when designing public and private sector transportation solutions. Explore the fundamental concepts of traffic engineering as they relate to operation, design, and management Access updated content that reflects changes in key industry-leading resources, such as the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), AASSHTO Policy on Geometric Design, Highway Safety Manual (HSM), and Americans with Disabilities Act Understand the current state of the traffic engineering field Leverage revised information that homes in on the key topics most relevant to traffic engineering in today's world, such as context-sensitive roadways and sustainable transportation solutions Traffic Engineering Handbook, Seventh Edition is an essential text for public and private sector transportation practitioners, transportation decision makers, public officials, and even upper-level undergraduate and graduate students who are studying transportation engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the development and testing of a guardfence-to-rigid bridge rail transition. The transition consists of a tubular W-beam supported on 7 inch diameter round wood posts. It is designed to transition to a vertical wall or to the concrete safety shaped barrier. It can be used on new construction or as a retrofit for existing installations. Based on a full-scale vehicular crash test program, the design was judged to be in compliance with recommended impact performance criteria as presented in NCHRP Report 230. Also described is a tentative design for approach guardfence at bridge ends near an abutting roadway. The design consists of short radius, curved guardrail supported on weakened round wood posts.

Book excerpt: "The Roadside Design Guide presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside safety and is written in dual units-metric and U.S. Customary. This book is a guide. It is not a standard, nor is it a design policy. It is intended to use as a resource document from which individual highway agencies can develop standards and policies. Although much of the material in the guide can be considered universal in its application, several recommendations are subjective in nature and may need modification to fit local conditions. However, it is important that significant deviations from the guide be based on operational experience and objective analysis. The 2011 edition of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide has been updated to include hardware that has met the evaluation criteria contained in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features and begins to detail the most current evaluation criteria contained under the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware, 2009 (MASH). For the most part, roadside hardware tested and accepted under older guidelines that are no longer applicable has not been excluded in this edition." -- AASHTO website.

Book excerpt: Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) materials have emerged as an alternative material for producing reinforcing bars for concrete structures. GFRP reinforcing bars offer advantages over steel reinforcement due to their noncorrosive nature and nonconductive behavior. Due to other differences in the physical and mechanical behavior of GFRP materials as opposed to steel, unique guidance on the engineering and construction of concrete bridge decks reinforced with GFRP bars is needed. These guide specifications offer a description of the unique material properties of GFRP composite materials as well as provisions for the design and construction of concrete bridge decks and railings reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.
