Book Synopsis Life Cycle Costing for Construction by : J.W. Bull
Download or read book Life Cycle Costing for Construction written by J.W. Bull and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-10-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction industry is becoming increasingly aware of the need to adopt a holistic approach to the design, building, and disposal of structures. With 60 per cent of the total construction budget in most developed countries being spent on repair and maintenance, there is an obvious need to design for reliability and durability, with more carefully planned maintenance and repair schedules. One important facet is to look at how costs are distributed and spent during the lifetime of a structure: an approach known as life cycle costing, which has the ultimate aim of minimising total lifetime expenditure. As an example, choosing an inexpensive coating for steelwork may require maintenance every three years, whereas a coating which is more expensive may require repairing only once per decade. It is a question of balance - taking the lifetime costs of the structure into consideration. This new book provides an insight into how whole life costing is affecting our approach to designing, building, maintaining and disposing of structures. The book is written for consulting engineers in the fields of civil and structural engineering, building designers, architects, quantity surveyors, refurbishing specialists, as well as practising civil and structural engineers engaged in planning, design, construction, repair and refurbishment of structures.

Book Synopsis National Transportation Planning by : Adib Kanafani
Download or read book National Transportation Planning written by Adib Kanafani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after starting work on the development of a methodology for national trans portation planning in Venezuela, we realized the importance of an integrated management process for such an effort. We also realized the absence in the literature of specific guidelines on how to manage and conduct a transportation planning effort. The literature on the subject of national transportation planning is predominantly theoretical and technical in nature. To a large extent, the absence of literature on management and broad-based methodological approaches reflects the limited and ad hoc nature of the experience in national transportation planning. This book is an attempt to fill that gap. The main objective of the book is to show one way by which a methodology for national transportation planning can be integrated into a process management framework. It reports on the experience that the authors had in the Venezuelan case, as well as in earlier national planning efforts. The book is not intended as a theoretical discussion of planning. Instead, it adopts a particular theoretical stand and proceeds on that basis to develop a program for applying a specific methodology. The intention is to leave as much of the details and elaborations of that methodology to the user. This is motivated by two considerations. The first is a pragmatic attempt to limit the scope of the book.

Book Synopsis The Urban and Regional Transformation of Britain by : John Goddard
Download or read book The Urban and Regional Transformation of Britain written by John Goddard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1983 The Urban and Regional Transformation of Britain, analyses economic and social changes recorded across the cities and regions of Britain since the Barlow Report. The collection analyses the whole country at a more detailed scale than the ten Standard Regions, for which most official statistics are produced. Although there are important differences between the major regions of Britain, many of the recent processes of change appear to have operated at a local level within rather than between regions. The essays in this volume bring together change at the regional and local labour market scales and provides a comprehensive statement of urban and regional change, seeking to highlight the new spatial priorities of the 1980s.

Book Synopsis Road Passenger Transport: Road Goods Transport by : D. L. Munby
Download or read book Road Passenger Transport: Road Goods Transport written by D. L. Munby and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road Passenger Transport: Road Goods Transport reviews sources of statistics on road passenger transport and the road transport of goods in Great Britain. Topics covered range from organization of passenger transport to main sources of data, along with regional statistics, modeling, and forecasts. Comprised of six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of inland transport on land in Great Britain, with the exception of railways. Varieties of passenger movement are considered, together with measurement of passenger transport. The discussion then turns to the organization of passenger transport, with emphasis on private movement and taxis as well as public road passenger transport. Main sources of statistics are presented, including the National Travel Survey; road censuses; vehicle registration and excise licensing; and annual reports of area licensing authorities. Data for pedestrians, bicycles, private cars, and motorcycles are also given. Examples of secondary analysis of available data are provided for purposes of modeling and forecasting. Papers on relevant theory, methodology, and statistical data requirements are also considered. This monograph will be of interest to both transport economists and environmentalists.
