Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A doctor chases, then assaults an elderly woman after she cuts in front of his BMW; a teenager shoots another driver because the driver "looked at him with disrespect"; one man kills another because "he was driving too slow." These are a few of the many examples of extreme road rage documented by Paul Eberle in this shocking look at the havoc caused by angry people in their cars. Eberle makes it clear that young and old, men and women, and all socioeconomic classes are involved in this epidemic of rage and violence on our highways. In 1998, the California Highway Patrol recorded 209 incidents of Assault with a Deadly Weapon in which a motor vehicle was the weapon used, and in the same year the media reported more than 4,000 stories on road rage nationwide. Since then, the problem has only gotten worse.Eberle lists the warning signs of potential road-rage drivers, suggests ways to avoid such dangerous individuals, discusses the psychology of the car as "holy icon" and the effects of traffic congestion on "mad car disease," expresses skepticism about psychologists specializing in aggressive driving, and proposes ways to reinvent our cities to make them less stressful, dangerous places.Complete with graphic pictures showing the dire consequences of driving while enraged, Terror on the Highway should be mandatory reading in all driver education classes.

Individually, we may decide to marry or just leave the house. Such decisions are often made subjectively without any quantitative analysis. Communities take risks when they decide not to build protection against flooding. Nations take risks when they invest in other countries or go to war. The human race take risk with its acceptance of the balance of nuclear power or global warming as a policy for peace. The acceptance of risk by individuals is often very different from the acceptance of the same type of risk by groups. This book discusses different aspects of risk together with some choices and presents examples to enlighten the reader. The author has written books on topics such as earthquakes hazard assessment and risk analysis.

Drawing on the insights of Bruno Latour, Donna Haraway and Michel Serres, the author elaborates an innovative methodology through which new hybrid objects of study are creatively constructed, tracing the ways in which the cultural, the natural and the technological interweave in the production of order and disorder. This book critically engages with and draws connections between a wide range of literature including those concerned with the environment, consumption and the body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Americans prize the ability to get behind the wheel and hit the open road, they have not always agreed on what constitutes safe, decorous driving or who is capable of it. Mobility without Mayhem is a lively cultural history of America’s fear of and fascination with driving, from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Jeremy Packer analyzes how driving has been understood by experts, imagined by citizens, regulated by traffic laws, governed through education and propaganda, and represented in films, television, magazines, and newspapers. Whether considering motorcycles as symbols of rebellion and angst, or the role of CB radio in regulating driving and in truckers’ evasions of those regulations, Packer shows that ideas about safe versus risky driving often have had less to do with real dangers than with drivers’ identities. Packer focuses on cultural figures that have been singled out as particularly dangerous. Women drivers, hot-rodders, bikers, hitchhikers, truckers, those who “drive while black,” and road ragers have all been targets of fear. As Packer debunks claims about the dangers posed by each figure, he exposes biases against marginalized populations, anxieties about social change, and commercial and political desires to profit by fomenting fear. Certain populations have been labeled as dangerous or deviant, he argues, to legitimize monitoring and regulation and, ultimately, to curtail access to automotive mobility. Packer reveals how the boundary between personal freedom and social constraint is continually renegotiated in discussions about safe, proper driving.
