Download or read book Road of Agony written by Joel Savage and published by Virtualbookworm.com Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It started in Africa, the place often referred to as the Dark Continent, in terms of colour. But there is something more associated to the term dark, which might be spiritual or might be the simple chapters of the normal growing life of the African. However, such an experience of the normal growing life is too tough to handle. Babatunde is a young man, whose harsh experience after his father's untimely death still haunts him. Exposed to the world at a very tender age, he meets unpleasant situations, untold hardships, physical and mental suffering, coupled with frustration, which could have led him to his grave, but he survives every ordeal. "Road of Agony" is a marvel of the humane, sorrowful, and lucid account, in a sharper, clearer image and understanding, of how corruption is within the police, border control officers, and the army in Africa. The writer has given the truest account of what happened to him, written in a startling manner as an African writer.
Download or read book Wave written by Sonali Deraniyagala and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brave, intimate, beautifully crafted memoir by a survivor of the tsunami that struck the Sri Lankan coast in 2004 and took her entire family. On December 26, Boxing Day, Sonali Deraniyagala, her English husband, her parents, her two young sons, and a close friend were ending Christmas vacation at the seaside resort of Yala on the south coast of Sri Lanka when a wave suddenly overtook them. She was only to learn later that this was a tsunami that devastated coastlines through Southeast Asia. When the water began to encroach closer to their hotel, they began to run, but in an instant, water engulfed them, Sonali was separated from her family, and all was lost. Sonali Deraniyagala has written an extraordinarily honest, utterly engrossing account of the surreal tragedy of a devastating event that all at once ended her life as she knew it and her journey since in search of understanding and redemption. It is also a remarkable portrait of a young family's life and what came before, with all the small moments and larger dreams that suddenly and irrevocably ended.
Book Synopsis The Great Famine by : Ciarán Ó Murchadha
Download or read book The Great Famine written by Ciarán Ó Murchadha and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-02 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over one million people died in the Great Famine, and more than one million more emigrated on the coffin ships to America and beyond. Drawing on contemporary eyewitness accounts and diaries, the book charts the arrival of the potato blight in 1845 and the total destruction of the harvests in 1846 which brought a sense of numbing shock to the populace. Far from meeting the relief needs of the poor, the Liberal public works programme was a first example of how relief policies would themselves lead to mortality. Workhouses were swamped with thousands who had subsisted on public works and soup kitchens earlier, and who now gathered in ragged crowds. Unable to cope, workhouse staff were forced to witness hundreds die where they lay, outside the walls. The next phase of degradation was the clearances, or exterminations in popular parlance which took place on a colossal scale. From late 1847 an exodus had begun. The Famine slowly came to an end from late 1849 but the longer term consequences were to reverberate through future decades.

Download or read book The Agony of Bun O'Keefe written by Heather Smith and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Miss Sunshine meets Room in this quirky, heartwarming story of friendship, loyalty and discovery. It's Newfoundland, 1986. Fourteen-year-old Bun O'Keefe has lived a solitary life in an unsafe, unsanitary house. Her mother is a compulsive hoarder, and Bun has had little contact with the outside world. What she's learned about life comes from the random books and old VHS tapes that she finds in the boxes and bags her mother brings home. Bun and her mother rarely talk, so when Bun's mother tells Bun to leave one day, she does. Hitchhiking out of town, Bun ends up on the streets of St. John's, Newfoundland. Fortunately, the first person she meets is Busker Boy, a street musician who senses her naivety and takes her in. Together they live in a house with an eclectic cast of characters: Chef, a hotel dishwasher with culinary dreams; Cher, a drag queen with a tragic past; Big Eyes, a Catholic school girl desperately trying to reinvent herself; and The Landlord, a man who Bun is told to avoid at all cost. Through her experiences with her new roommates, and their sometimes tragic revelations, Bun learns that the world extends beyond the walls of her mother's house and discovers the joy of being part of a new family -- a family of friends who care.
Book Synopsis Passport to Heaven by : Micah Wilder
Download or read book Passport to Heaven written by Micah Wilder and published by Harvest House Publishers. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You have a call, Elder Wilder.” When missionary Micah Wilder set his sights on bringing a Baptist congregation into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he had no idea that he was the one about to be changed. Yet when he finally came to know the God of the Bible, Micah had no choice but to surrender himself—no matter the consequences. For a passionate young Mormon who had grown up in the Church, finding authentic faith meant giving up all he knew: his community, his ambitions, and his place in the world. Yet as Micah struggled to reconcile the teachings of his Church with the truths revealed in the Bible, he awakened to his need for God’s grace. This led him to be summoned to the door of the mission president, terrified but confident in the testimony he knew could cost him everything. Passport to Heaven is a gripping account of Micah’s surprising journey from living as a devoted member of a religion based on human works to embracing the divine mercy and freedom that can only be found in Jesus Christ.
Download or read book Agony of Choice written by David John Lu and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that the policies that Matsuoko Yosuke pursued as Japan's foreign minister in 1940-41 were profoundly influential on the course of history for Japan and the United States, Lu (emeritus, history and Japanese studies, Bucknell U.) provides a biography of the American- educated Japanese official that focuses on the causes and development of the policies he pursued. Matsuoko's relationship with the U.S. is characterized as one of "love-hate" and his policies towards the United States are viewed as ill considered. His policies towards China are viewed with considerably more charity. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: A grave could be visited. Ashes could be scattered. But simply vanishing? That ripped a hole in the world the size of a life, and through that hole sighed a terrible wind repeating a single note: Gone. For years, Aggie had forgotten the real Joanne, the way her sister had laughed, fought, been. But now that the videotape made her real again—no matter how many times the recording changed, no matter how terrifying the flickering images—it was all Aggie wanted. To trade the Gone for the One. She owed Joanne that much. To say she was sorry. That it had been her fault. It had been all their faults.

Download or read book Agony of Dal Lake written by Maharaj Kaul and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kashmir has been on the mind of Maharaj Kaul ever since the eruption of the civil war there in 1989, and it has been in his mind since his childhood, as he was born there. For him Kashmir is more than his birthplace, it is an irrigator of his consciousness. The author of the books The Light Through The Woods: Dreams Of Survival Of Human Soul In The Age Of Technology and Inclinations And Reality: The Search For The Absolute published last year examines the ongoing civil war in Kashmir over the last two decades that has wounded both the Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits in the spheres of personal, economic, social, and political lives and it has rendered the latter into refugees in their own nation, exiled from their home of 5,000 years. Thousands of Kashmiris have died, a lot more wounded; but the end is not even in sight. The soul of Kashmir is under pressure. The book explores the causes and history of Kashmir Problem and what its solution should be. It also celebrates some of its outstanding people and provides vignettes of some of its popular places, culture, life, and mystifying natural beauty. It is both a mourning over the tragedy of Kashmir and a celebration of its spiritual essence.

Book Synopsis Participating in God by : Paul S. Fiddes
Download or read book Participating in God written by Paul S. Fiddes and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participating in God claims that a doctrine of the Trinity cannot be developed in isolation from pastoral experience. It is not sufficient to view the persons of the Trinity as offering a mere example for human relationships; actual participation in this triune communication shapes both our knowledge of God and the pastoral practices that flow from it. Paul S. Fiddes develops a radical understanding of the "persons" in God as nothing other than relations, or as movements of divine relationship into which we are drawn. This important new book engages in conversation with recent thought about the Trinity in Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox theology. But it does so always through theological reflection on pastoral concerns. Fiddes brings the doctrine of the Trinity into dialogue with key issues, including the relation of the individual to community, the nature of power and authority, the effect of intercessory prayer, the problems of suffering, the power of forgiveness, the threat of death, the use of spiritual gifts, and the living of a sacramental life. Participating in God is essential reading for all those interested in Christian doctrine and pastoral care.
