Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence are one of the most widely known assessment frameworks in the world, interest in the Criteria has ebbed and flowed over the years. In part this may be due to the fact that applicants are often on their own when it comes to determining how to use the Criteria and award programs in an efficient and effective manner. This difficulty is somewhat by design, since the Criteria are non-prescriptive. The requirements are presented as more than 200 questions written in a generic manner to enable their application by all types of organizations. They do not tell leaders what to do to meet the requirements, which is both good and bad. While it allows organizations to develop processes to respond to the Criteria in ways that meet their unique needs, this has created a barrier for some leaders. This book provides a detailed road map and systematic process to design and implement a customized operating model for performance excellence based on the Criteria. The road map includes regular use of state award programs for feedback to enable mid-course correction. Though recognition is not its primary purpose, following this road map also increases the likelihood of being recognized by these award programs. The approach presented here will not guarantee an award, but it will help an organization’s leaders use the Criteria and award programs more efficiently and effectively as an aid to organizational transformation and improvement. "It is true, organizations are perfectly designed to get the results they are getting. The Baldrige framework is an operating model that guides organizations to establish key processes that are proven to yield high reliability. The framework, however, can be intimidating. Kilbride’s Road Map clearly explains and provides ‘doable’ steps to apply the Baldrige Criteria and become more process-honoring. It is a compilation of the valuable education, guidance, and support Joe provided us on our journey." David Fox, President and Pattie Skriba, VP Business Excellence Advocate Good Samaritan Hospitalbr2010 Baldrige Award Recipient "The Baldrige journey of continuous improvement never ends. For such a journey you need a knowledgeable co-pilot, and Joe Kilbride has helped many organizations, examiners, judges and others pursuing excellence to navigate that journey. His expertise is priceless and the Road Map makes him your virtual co-pilot. I hope you will take the first step today; excellence awaits." Bob Barnett Retired CEO, Motorola CGISSbr2002 Baldrige Award Recipient "Surviving the challenges of today's global competition requires having a long-term plan..... and a road map to get there. Here is the essential companion for a successful journey." David Boulay resident Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on several years study of the nine Baldrige Award winners from health care. It describes how these organizations approached their “Baldrige journey” and what other health care leaders should do to reap similar benefits. To fully understand the journey for these nine organizations and their return on investment, the authors studied each of their 50-page award applications, presentations at national and regional meetings, and other publications by or about them. Additionally and most importantly, CEOs and other senior leaders were interviewed at length. The questions asked of these leaders followed three basic themes: How did you successfully use the Baldrige framework to drive improvement? What would you recommend other organizations do to gain the value you have from a Baldrige journey? What can we learn from you that would help other organizations manage their improvement journeys to maximize the value they gain? “Health reform is making it clear: healthcare organizations improving to great clinical, financial, and experience outcomes will win and thrive for the communities they serve. Yet research teaches us that most change fails. Journey to Excellence, through ‘brutal truth,’ inspirational storytelling, courageous journeys, disciplined research, and sustained results, shows us the way, the very hard way, as well as the awesome possibility.” Jim Conway, SVP, Institute for Healthcare Improvement “W. Edwards Deming spoke of consistent, business-driving quality as arising from ‘a system of production.’ At best, health care delivery in most places today is bubbling chaos. The Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award supplies the only practical, comprehensive outline for health care as a system of production in existence today. It’s about time that health care leaders had a comprehensive guide. Taught by experts, this volume is drawn from careful analysis of those who have succeeded. You hold the future in your hands – at least, for those who will not only survive, but thrive in the coming turmoil of health care reform.” Brent James, MD, Intermountain Health Care “Journey to Excellence is an insightful synthesis of the powerful Baldrige framework and the real life journeys of the healthcare award winners. Their stories will deepen understanding both for those new to and experienced with the Baldrige Criteria. This book is a major contribution to achieving healthcare excellence!” Louise Liang, MD, Former Chair, Institute for Healthcare Improvement “Most healthcare organizations are currently in a purely reactive mode – just struggling to get through the day and the fiscal year, collecting the data that they are required to report, and responding to crises. In Journey to Excellence, Goonan and her co-authors show healthcare leaders how to take control of the agenda. The Baldrige Criteria define the journey that can help organizations approach greatness, and the authors’ LASER set of behaviors describes what they need to ‘pack’ for the trip.” Tom Lee, MD, Network President, Partners Healthcare System “Journey to Excellence provides a concrete framework for leaders seeking to improve their organizational performance. Health care organizations are likely to face increasing pressure to improve quality and reduce cost in the coming years. Goonan, Muzikowski, and Stoltz offer a strategic roadmap for a successful transformational change. This book contains real life stories of leaders who used Baldrige to successfully transform their organizations into high performance enterprises.” Vinod K. Sahney, Chief Strategy Officer, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

COMMENTS FROM OTHER CUSTOMERS Average Customer Rating: (5 of 5 based on 1 review) "David Spong is a hero from among the quality gurus of our time...and more than expounding on successful principles, he has practiced them and achieved the highest level of success with them. His and Ms. Collard's book describes their journey, highlights the key criteria and issues they had to address, and provides excellent insight into the 'behind the scenes' debates and agreements that occurred to lead Boeing to demonstrate their absolute and unwavering dedication to the Baldrige framework to start their journey before and continue their journey beyond winning the National Quality Award for manufacturing (1998) and service (2003)." Book excerpt: This book presents an innovative and radically logical way of thinking about organizational knowledge and competition that centers on discipline, integration and focus. By tapping into the previously unrealized strengths that lie in all companies, the author suggests that it is possible for companies to move beyond informational chaos to create focused and enticing new opportunities. The 12 step method presented in the first five chapters show you how to take information from feedback from assessments, surveys and audits, convert it into usable knowledge and get bottom line improvements. The strategy expands the plan-do-check-act (PDCA) model into a Plan-Do-Knowledge-Act (PDKA) process. The case studies provided reinforce the principles and the theory behind them. Significant challenges face any organization intent on becoming world-class by managing knowledge effectively. They can be classified into four types: making use of your information by integrating it, organizing the different forms of information into a manageable framework, focusing equal attention on your strengths and your weaknesses, developing decision-making criteria based on key company drivers. The12 steps outlined in Knowledge-Driven Profit Improvement: Implementing Assessment Feedback Using PDKAction Theory will show you how to make your company into a world-class organization. Features Assists companies in becoming more competitive Serves as a guide for companies to use when taking their feedback from assessments, surveys, and audits, then integrating the feedback, and prioritizing it so that financial and operational improvements can be made Allows companies to use the information they have been accruing for years Helps companies establish better business priorities for the purpose of better planning Demonstrates the significance of improvements made by using the information gained from assessments.

This comprehensive two-volume reference book is the first to analyze the central role of work and the workforce in U.S. life from the Industrial Revolution through today's information economy. Drawing on a variety of disciplines—economics, public policy, law, human and civil rights, cultural studies, and organizational psychology—its 256 entries examine key events, concepts, institutions, and individuals in labor history. Entries also tackle tough contemporary questions that reflect the conflicts inherent in capitalism. What is the impact of work on families and communities? On minority and immigrant populations? How shall we respond to changing work roles and the growing influence of the transnational corporation? Work in America describes and evaluates attempts to address social and class issues—affirmative action, occupational health and safety, corporate management science, and trade unionism and organized labor—and offers the kind of comprehensive understanding needed to discover workable solutions.

What makes these top-performing employees have such an impact on the success of each of their organizations? What encourages their sense of organizational ownership? With deep insight into eight award-winning, market-leading companies, It’s My Company Too! explores how the highest-performing organizations entangle employees, systems, culture, and leadership into a unified drive for excellence. The entangled culture emerges from a unique synergy and magnetism within the organization that is the result of leaders: • Doing extraordinary things • Building an ethical organization • Focusing human capital • Using processes to guide performance • Building self-efficacy and esteem • Developing freedom and responsibility within a culture of discipline • Hardwiring discretionary thinking and actions • Guiding the transformational process Through interviews and extensive field research, the authors analyze how companies across industries tackle internal and external challenges, constructing the pieces of the entanglement puzzle. Along the way, they show you how to develop motivated, involved, and entangled employees who embody an organization’s core values, vision, and mission—and succeed beyond imagination.
