Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an accessible introduction to RNA viruses and the infectious outcomes that they cause in the central nervous system (CNS). Chapters cover the major RNA viruses, their impact on the CNS, and the similarities and differences in pathological outcomes that can be observed. Neuroscientists, be they students, researchers, or clinicians, will benefit from the timely coverage provided. Our understanding of viruses, and specifically RNA viruses and their pathological impact, is rapidly evolving. For example, the close molecular interaction of viruses with the CNS cell types in the human host is poorly understood. Readers can use the book to understand clearly the cellular and molecular mechanisms governing pathological outcomes of RNA virus infection in the cell types of the human brain (e.g., neurons, endothelial cells, astrocytes, resident immune cells) based on summarized case studies, and gain insight into how cell type-specific defects affect brain function and cause poor clinical outcomes. The book is aimed primarily at neuroscience students and postgraduates wishing to learn about virology and professionals who are interested to learn more about virus-associated neuropathology. A basic knowledge of cell and molecular biology is assumed; however, readers across the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics will find this topical and timely publication of value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition is a comprehensive study of the viruses that affect the brain and the central nervous system. Along with a focus on the viruses themselves, it addresses the diseases they cause, current treatments and preventive measures. Also discussed are the unique aspects of how viruses cause disease and why certain hosts are more susceptible (e.g., polymorphisms, age, co-morbidities). Because there are 29 cutting edge chapters, written by experts in the fields, Neurotropic Viral Infections has been divided into two separate volumes. Volume 1, Neurotropic RNA Viruses, includes 14 chapters on RNA viruses that cause human disease of the central nervous system ranging from Bornavirus to polio to West Nile. Volume 2, Neurotropic Retroviruses, DNA Viruses, Immunity and Transmission, includes 15 chapters divided into two parts. Part 1 includes 7 chapters on retroviruses and DNA viruses that cause human disease of the central nervous system ranging from HIV to varicella zoster virus. Part 2 includes chapters on transmission of these viruses by transplantation, bites by bats and insects, clinical management of the infections, and beneficial uses of attenuated viruses. Neurotropic Viral Infections is a unique resource, bridging basic, clinical, and translational approaches.

Book excerpt: For increasing the knowledge about small RNA an online platform was built in this thesis, homogenizing the analysis of sequencing data from over 4,000 samples collected in different laboratories worldwide from various organisms. Consequentially, tissue and disease specific biomarkers were detected and evidence was found for bacterial and viral infections of the sequenced tissues. This motivated the development of an algorithm for analyzing non-host RNA sequencing reads for detecting pathogenic abundance in the host. Focusing on neurological diseases, bacterial presence is suggested in brains of dementia patients. The platform and the algorithm can help scientists to add important leads to their own studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plethora of miscommunication and disinformation about how SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) spreads suggests a widespread misunderstanding of how viruses work. This book will focus on the interpretation of scientific and medical results, giving the reader guidance on interpreting virological data, including the concepts of 'live' versus infectious virus. The first section covers the background of virology and immunology, introducing the reader to the science of virology (using COVID-19 as an illustration) and considers the measurement of infectious disease, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), molecular biology and the immune system. The second section looks at clinical virology and neurovirology. Taking a novel perspective on how viruses may play a role in evolution, this book discusses antivirals and how autoimmune disorders may be caused or triggered by viruses. Concise and practical, this is a key resource for those working in neurology, infectious disease and virology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tropical Medicine Notebook is a new concept in providing a concise overview of the key topics in tropical medicine, using short notes, diagrams, maps, and tables to present the material in an accessible, engaging, memorable, and interesting way. The format is generally a page per topic, with division of each page into subsections by boxes to make it easy to find the relevant information. Cross-referencing is provided to allow quick linking between relevant sections of the book. Providing the key information in bite-size chunks, the Tropical Medicine Notebook is a useful companion to more comprehensive texts. Divided into eight sections; the first five cover infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and helminths, followed by a further three which present the topics of vector biology, disease syndromes and envenomation. Where relevant, the section is prefaced by a classification system to provide a logical overview, helping with assimilation of information and highlighting important relationships between organisms. It is an ideal learning and revision guide for students or trainees in infection, microbiology, and tropical medicine, as well as being a useful reference resource for healthcare and laboratory staff across the wide range of disciplines to which infection may present.

Book excerpt: There has been a tremendous increase in interest in the neuropathogenicity of viruses during the past decade as we have come to recognize that the human immunodeficiency virus, which causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), can infect glial cells and cause neurological disease. Yet this increase has not been limited to AIDS but has extended to viruses that infect either or both the central and peripheral nervous systems. The changes examined here include both neurological and psychological diseases or syndromes. Moreover, the chapters in this volume review the interaction of the host immune system with the viruses examined and how such interactions may increase or decrease the neuropatho genicity of the viruses. Questions regarding viral neuropathogenesis include: (I) What is the mode of transmission of virus to the nervous system? (2) What types of cells are infected, and do they contain receptors for the virus? (3) What is the extent of damage that results from viral infection? (4) What are the immunologic mecha nisms by which damage is mediated or limited? Many of these questions remain unanswered, but this volume delves into efforts to provide some answers.

This group of viruses includes human simplex type 1 and 2, Epstein–Barr virus, Kaposi's Sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, cytomegalovirus, HHV6A, 6B and 7, and varicella-zoster virus. The viral diseases and cancers they cause are significant and often recurrent. Their prevalence in the developed world accounts for a major burden of disease, and as a result there is a great deal of research into the pathophysiology of infection and immunobiology. Another important area covered within this volume concerns antiviral therapy and the development of vaccines. All these aspects are covered in depth, both scientifically and in terms of clinical guidelines for patient care. The text is illustrated generously throughout and is fully referenced to the latest research and developments.
