Book Synopsis Rivals for Power by : James A. Thurber
Download or read book Rivals for Power written by James A. Thurber and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that Republicans control two of the three branches of government following the election of Donald Trump, the relationship between the president and Capitol Hill continues to be strained. Underscoring the book’s theme that the executive and legislature regularly compete and clash—even when controlled by the same party—already tensions are emerging between President Trump and the Republican congressional majority around the Affordable Care Act, infrastructure spending, trade agreements, relations with Russia, and immigration and refugee policy. Now in its sixth edition, Rivals for Power: Presidential-Congressional Relations brings together the knowledge of leading scholars and scholar-practitioners alike to explain the complex political dynamic between the president and Congress in new chapters. Contributors analyze the structural, political, and behavioral factors that shape this relationship, while showing how and why rivalry has tended to intensify when different parties control the two branches. Intended for students, scholars, public officials, and the general public, Rivals for Power offers an accessible and engaging analysis of executive and legislative rivalry across a span of eras, with particular attention to developments under recent presidents, including Trump and Obama. Contributors include Gary Andres, Ross K. Baker, Sarah Binder, Patrick Griffin, David R. Jones, Douglas L. Kriner, John Anthony Maltese, James P. Pfiffner, Jordan Tama, Claudia H. Thurber, and James A. Thurber.

Download or read book Crossed Wires written by Dan Schiller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-17 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping, revisionist historical analysis of telecommunications networks, from the dawn of the republic to the 21st century. Telecommunications networks are vast, intricate, hugely costly systems for exchanging messages and information-within cities and across continents. From the Post Office and the telegraph to today's internet, these networks have sown domestic division while also acting as sources of international power. In Crossed Wires, Dan Schiller, who has conducted archival research on US telecommunications for more than forty years, recovers the extraordinary social history of the major network systems of the United States. Drawing on arrays of archival documents and secondary sources, Schiller reveals that this history has been shaped by sharp social and political conflict and is embedded in the larger history of an expansionary US political economy. Schiller argues that networks have enabled US imperialism through a a recurrent "American system" of cross-border communications. Three other key findings wind through the book. First, business users of networks--more than carriers, and certainly more than residential users--have repeatedly determined how telecommunications systems have developed. Second, despite their current importance for virtually every sphere of social life, networks have been consecrated above all to aiding the circulation of commodities. Finally, although the preferences of executives and officials have broadly determined outcomes, these elites have repeatedly had to contend against the ideas and organizations of workers, social movement activists, and other reformers. This authoritative and comprehensive revisionist history of US telecommunications argues that not technology but a dominative--and contested--political economy drove the evolution of this critical industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, designed to give a survey history of American labor from colonial times to the present, is uniquely well suited to speak to the concerns of today’s teachers and students. As issues of growing inequality, stagnating incomes, declining unionization, and exacerbated job insecurity have increasingly come to define working life over the last 20 years, a new generation of students and teachers is beginning to seek to understand labor and its place and ponder seriously its future in American life. Like its predecessors, this ninth edition of our classic survey of American labor is designed to introduce readers to the subject in an engaging, accessible way.
