The problem has been analyzed using the Bronfenbrenner ecological model. The population consisted of late adolescents (15 {u2013} 19), using both survey and focus group discussions. This descriptive study was carried out in four congested areas of Bangkok (Railway community, Tuk Daeng, Rim Klong Sam Saeng and Soi Sauan Noeng), with a selfadministered questionnaire distributed to 99 late adolescents (both male and female), and afterward three focus groups (one in Railway community with female; and two, in Rim Klong Sam Saeng, with female and male separately) were carried out. Independent variables, included micro (age, sex, attending school, having a job, having a source of income, alcohol consumption), meso (living with both parents, parental monitoring, parental communication, partner communication, peers{u2019} influence) and macro-level (urban environment and instant messaging). Descriptive statistics, Chi-square, and logistic regression were used to analyze quantitative data. The focus group was analyzed through theme extraction. The quantitative analysis showed significant relations regarding age (pvalue 0.001), attending school (p-value

Book Synopsis HIV/AIDS and the Social Consequences of Untamed Biomedicine by : Graham Fordham
Download or read book HIV/AIDS and the Social Consequences of Untamed Biomedicine written by Graham Fordham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the case of HIV/AIDS in Thailand, this book examines how anthropological and other interpretative social science research has been utilized in modeling the AIDS epidemic, and in the design and implementation of interventions. It argues that much social science research has been complicit with the forces that generated the epidemic and with the social control agendas of the state, and that as such it has increased the weight of structural violence bearing upon the afflicted. The book also questions claims of Thai AIDS control success, arguing that these can only be made at the cost of excluding categories such as intravenous drug users, the incarcerated, and homosexuals, who continue to experience extraordinarily high levels of levels of HIV infection. Considered deviant and undeserving, these persons have deliberately been excluded from harm reduction programs. Overall, this work argues for the untapped potential of anthropological research in the health field, a confident anthropology rooted in ethnography and a critical reflexivity. Crucially, it argues that in context of interdisciplinary collaborations, anthropological research must refuse relegation to the status of an adjunct discipline, and must be free epistemologically and methodologically from the universalizing assumptions and practices of biomedicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1998 Sexual Behaviour and HIV/AIDS in Europe is detailed study comparing the major population surveys on sexual behaviour and HIV/AIDS carried out in Europe at the time of publication. Leading European researchers explore the differences and similarities between European countries in patterns of sexual behaviour and responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. As well as providing an empirical and methodological base for future research, the comparative analyses lead researchers, policy makers, health-educators and the media to new insights and a deeper understanding of issues that are of central concern in many countries. The chapters include discussion of data on sexual initiation, homosexual and bisexual behaviour, sexual practices, sexual partners, risk behaviour, STDs, preventive practices, the normative context, knowledge of HIV/AIDS, and attitudes towards people with HIV/AIDS. The book results from a major European Concerted Action, funded by the European Union Biomedical and Health Research programme (BIOMED), and coordinated by the Centre d'Etudes Sociologiques of the Facultes Universitaires Saint-Louis, Brussels, Belgium. It follows Sexual Interactions and HIV Risk, published in 1997.

Book excerpt: In 1978 Warren Fellows, Paul Hayward and William Sinclair were convicted of heroin trafficking between Thailand and Australia. They were sentenced to life imprisonment in Bangkok's notorious Bang Kwang men's prison, the Bangkok Hilton. For Warren Fellows, it was the beginning of twelve years of hell. The Damage Done takes you behind the bars of a Bangkok prison. A place where sewer rats and cockroaches are the only nutritious food, where autocratic prison guards giggle as they deliver pulverising blows and where the worst punishment by far is the khun deo - solitary confinement, Thai style. Brutally honest and repentant of his initial crime, Warren talks about the decade of his life he lost in leg irons. The Damage Done is a brave and compelling book that poses harrowing questions on the nature of justice. Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.
