This book was released on 2006-04-09 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 12 out of 16, University of Bedfordshire (Business School), 74 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This dissertation seeks to compare risk-taking behaviour in response to activities initiated by the teacher by Chinese, Greek and other second language learners of English. A common perception of Chinese students is that they regard the learning of English as important not for communication purposes but rather to enable them to gain access to higher education and therefore better career chances. Another reason for their relatively poor speaking and listening skills could be the fact that many Chinese students hold the false belief that learning English merely involves memorising words, individual structures and grammatical rules. Because of their hesitation or unwillingness to take risks in the language classroom, teachers often reach the conclusion that their level of English is lower than it really is. The shy attitude of many Chinese students may create irritation and frustration among their fellow students in the classroom. Greek students seem to be the opposite of Chinese students. Reluctance to take risks means that these students make less progress in their English learning and therefore it takes longer for them to learn English. On the other hand, students who are taking more risks have a better chance of learning English more quickly. Risk-taking behaviour in the classroom will be addressed in this dissertation, with a particular focus on Chinese students, and possible explanations will be discussed.

Book Synopsis PRC Overseas Political Activities by : Andrew Chubb
Download or read book PRC Overseas Political Activities written by Andrew Chubb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political elites in liberal democracies are showing heightened concern about threats to national security from the overseas political activities of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and its supporters. This Whitehall Paper argues that an effective liberal democratic policy response requires careful disaggregation of distinct sets of risks: to national security; civil liberties; and academic freedom. Although widely cited as a model to follow, Australia’s response to these issues illustrates how aggregation of these diverse risks into a singular national security threat – commonly labelled ‘Chinese influence’ – can produce alarmist public policy discourse, legislative overreach and mismatched institutional responsibilities. The Paper suggests a set of measures for liberal democracies to manage their engagement with China’s powerful and increasingly authoritarian party-state.

Book Synopsis Willingness to Communicate in the Chinese EFL University Classroom by : Jian-E Peng
Download or read book Willingness to Communicate in the Chinese EFL University Classroom written by Jian-E Peng and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2014-02-26 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents mixed-methods research into Chinese students' willingness to communicate (WTC) in an EFL classroom context. The interrelationships between WTC and motivation, communication confidence, learner beliefs and classroom environment are examined using structural equation modelling on data collected in a large-scale survey. These results are then complemented and expanded upon in a follow-up multiple case-study that identifies six themes which account for fluctuations of WTC over time and across situations. The qualitative and quantitative data provide the grounds for the proposition of an ecological model of WTC in the Chinese EFL university classroom, which reveals that WTC is socioculturally constructed as a function of the interaction of individual and environmental factors inside and beyond the classroom walls.

Book Synopsis Educational Equality and International Students by : Stuart Tannock
Download or read book Educational Equality and International Students written by Stuart Tannock and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly globalised educational landscape, this book examines whether the principle of educational equality can be applied across nation state borders. Exploring the tension between the theory of educational equality and the reality that most educational institutions are rooted in local communities and national frameworks, the author thus probes the consequences for institutions, individuals and communities as the number of international students grows exponentially. A topic that has previously received limited attention, the author draws upon theoretical literature and an empirical study of how universities in the United Kingdom conceptualise and promote principles of educational equality for international as compared with home students. This pioneering work will be interest and value to students and scholars of international education, international students, educational equality and globalisation, as well as practitioners and policy makers.

Against a backdrop of theory, policy documents, and examples of practice, he weaves together research in both secondary and tertiary education, with a particular focus on the key stakeholders involved in EMI: the teachers and the students. Whilst acknowledging that the momentum of EMI is unlikely to be diminished, and identifying its potential benefits, the author raises questions about the ways it has been introduced and developed, and explores how we can arrive at a true cost–benefit analysis of its future impact. “This state-of-the-art monograph presents a wide-ranging, multi-perspectival yet coherent overview of research, policy, and practice of English Medium Instruction around the globe. It gives a thorough, in-depth, and thought-provoking treatment of an educational phenomenon that is spreading on an unprecedented scale.” Guangwei Hu, National Institute of Education, Singapore Additional online resources are available at www.oup.com/elt/teacher/emi Ernesto Macaro is Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Oxford and is the founding Director of the Centre for Research and Development on English Medium Instruction at the university.
