Book excerpt: In a sleepy, secluded Alaska town called Barrow, the sun sets and doesn't rise for more than thirty consecutive days and nights from November to December. During this time a few years ago, from the darkness and across the frozen wasteland, an evil that normally preferred to exist in the shadows descended upon Barrow and brought the residents to their knees. Barrow's only hope was Eben and Stella Olemaun, a husband-and-wife law enforcement team who were torn between their own survival and saving the town they loved. Months later, as Stella Olemaun attempts to warn the world about the looming vampire threat by any means necessary, a rogue government agent may be taking more than an active interest in her story. And meanwhile, further north, a new sheriff and his young son must solve the lingering mystery of Barrow, even as the survivors of the original attack prepare for the sun to set once again -- however this time, they're ready. 30 Days Of Night: Rumors Of The Undead is Steve Niles's innovative and eagerly anticipated expansion of a nightmarish narrative that explores the nature of ancient evil existing -- and thriving -- in an unsuspecting modern world.

Book excerpt: The walking dead from 15 centuries haunt this compendium of ghostly visitations through the ages, exploring the history of our fascination with zombies and other restless souls. Since ancient times, accounts of supernatural activity have mystified us. Ghost stories as we know them did not develop until the late nineteenth century, but the restless dead haunted the premodern imagination in many forms, as recorded in historical narratives, theological texts, and personal letters. The Penguin Book of the Undead teems with roving hordes of dead warriors, corpses trailed by packs of barking dogs, moaning phantoms haunting deserted ruins, evil spirits emerging from burning carcasses in the form of crows, and zombies with pestilential breath. Spanning from the Hebrew scriptures to the Roman Empire, the Scandinavian sagas to medieval Europe, the Protestant Reformation to the Renaissance, this beguiling array of accounts charts our relationship with spirits and apparitions, wraiths and demons over fifteen hundred years, showing the evolution in our thinking about the ability of dead souls to return to the realm of the living—and to warn us about what awaits us in the afterlife. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book excerpt: “Joe Nassise has raised the bar for the whole genre.” —Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of The Dragon Factory Combine the take-no-prisoners heroic grit of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds with the irreverent inventiveness of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, set it on the blood-and-gore-soaked European battlefields of World War One, and you get By the Blood of Heroes, a wildly imaginative alternate history zombie novel by acclaimed urban fantasy author Joseph Nassise. When the German high command employs a terrible new chemical weapon that reanimates the dead, Allied forces must take on the Kaiser’s zombie army in order to rescue a downed American flying ace in the first book of Nassise’s The Great Undead War saga. By the Blood of Heroes is a deliciously gruesome adventure that horror and alternate history lovers, steampunk aficionados, and fans of such zombie-centric offerings as TV’s The Walking Dead, popular literature’s World War Z, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and Zombie Haiku, and the Resident Evil video game and film series will eagerly devour.

Book excerpt: Blake was never one for taking chances. He lived in a world of statistics and probabilities where everything could be controlled. That world disappeared the day the dead got up and began attacking the living. Now he must struggle to survive and to make sense of a new and chaotic world that is quickly spiraling out of control. Rise of the Dead chronicles the first week of events beginning from the moment the dead rise. While the story is a fast-paced thrill ride through an ever-growing zombie horde, the novel aims to draw upon familiar themes as those found in the Romero classics. Along the way, Blake finds himself thrust among other unlikely survivors who must adapt to the realities of the undead world or join the legion of zombies. They must do more than fight off the undead. The survivors must fight against their conditioned apathy towards humanity.

Book excerpt: Night had fallen, and Fetrona lay sleeping in her bed within her new room. Behind the headboard was a large mirror covered by a silver satin sheet as a curtain. Confidus Seaton, who was concerned for her, came into the room holding a basin filled with water so Fetrona could freshen up. He set the basin down upon an elegant dresser. To the side of the basin was a two-foot-high golden cross. Watched over by the spirit of God, Fetrona seemed to be in a trance. She was in deep sorrow over her life with Andromin. And now he was gone. Confidus closed the door and left the room. Moments later, a screw upon the window that fastened a knob on the large French window across from the bed began to slowly unscrew itself. It turned ever so slowly. When the screw unfastened from the knob, it fell to the floor. From within the screw pinhole, blood began to spray into the room, drenching the bed cover. Soon it was filled with blood, from which arose the crimson-coated figure of Cryptus. He sat on the bed looming over Fetrona. His face was dry and coated with a cracked red color. He edged closer to Fetrona's face. "You will pledge your soul to me. Give me the lust I desire. We shall walk the earth, and in the living night, seek solace of the darkness and never see the sun rise and set through countless centuries," said Cryptus. He touched her lips with his bloody fingertips. As he peered down at her watching her sleep, he spoke: "I will take you from this tormented world. You will join my wives. I baptize you with my blood." Then he kissed her lips with his bloody mouth, and, with no concern for the living, sprouted fangs and bit into her neck. Cryptus's wide-open eyes gleamed bright red. "You are now part of me." The kiss of death spread throughout her entire head and body. Soon she was covered in cracked, dried blood. In the meantime, Confidus Seaton had entered the room bringing tea for Fetrona. When he saw the gruesome sight, he dropped the tray and tea set, which shattered on the floor. Running to the dresser, Confidus picked up the basin of water and dashed it against the golden cross. Immediately, it transformed into holy water against the cross. The power of God penetrated the vampire; the creature sat, frozen in a trance. Confidus ran to the headboard of the bed and drew the satin drapes. With the mirror now reflecting the golden cross from the other side, Cryptus began to smoke and burn, emitting black smoke. Howling in pain, the creature opened his eyes and mouth wide and his fangs began to crack and crumble into dust. With every ounce of strength and power Cryptus had left, he transformed himself into black, misty fog, which drifted against the window and seeped out through the screw hole of the knob. The fog drifted out of the castle and flew into the sky. The black, misty fog landed upon ground and transformed into the wolf, which then scurried away. Within Fetrona's room, Confidus looked down at the corpse of Fetrona. He knew that the devil Cryptus had baptized her with his blood. Recognizing she was now undead, he asked two men to wrap Fetrona's bloodied body in cloth, take her to the courtyard, and burn her body. The two men did as Confidus asked. Fetrona's undead body was cremated. As the body burned, Cryptus lay far away on dirt, his face convulsing violently. His eyes burned a fiery red and his entire body writhed with pain. He knew Fetrona was dead. The next morning, Confidus learned from a man from the brothel that a man who resembled Andromin Seaton, calling himself Cryptus, had spoken to four women, and they had become his followers. He said with the forecast of clear day and sunlight about, the four woman were to transport Cryptus to the mountains of Drone within a wooden casket. Confidus had arranged six of his men to search for Cryptus and destroy him before he could leave for the Drone mountains. The man had overheard that Cryptus was living in an abandoned castle on Ridge Mountain.

Book excerpt: The New Testament records seven separate incidents of dead people returning to life through the power of God. In the midst of the current cultural fascination with undead creatures, many believers in the church are more familiar with zombies in entertainment than with the amazing stories of new life recorded in the Bible. Undead: Revived, Resuscitated, and Reborn retells these stories in a unique style that will reach a new generation of readers and challenge them to come back from the spiritual dead. Few believers realize that many people - including six specific individuals - are raised from the dead between the Gospels and book of Acts. Undead applies those stories to revitalize the faith of believers while leading seekers to discover the spiritual resuscitation that only comes from God through His Son. By examining each story of resuscitation, readers discover gospel truths that they can apply to their own lies in ways that will elevate hope and challenge faith. Relating to the characters in these accounts helps bring to light areas in our lives that may need revitalization and challenge us to decide whether we will allow God to transform us. Billions died and rose again, hungry for human flesh. Two years later, the undead have evolved. Now, besides the shambling, mindless cannibals are the hunters—cunning and fast, like wolves—and the thinkers, whose shocking intelligence and single-minded predatory obsession may mean the downfall of what’s left of humanity. As Danny leads a ragtag band of the living through the remnants of the American Midwest, rumors arise of a safe place somewhere east. But the closer they get to it, the more certain Danny becomes that something evil waits for them at the end of the line. With an unspeakable secret riding beside her and an unbreakable promise made to a small, silent boy, Danny must stake everything she has—her leadership, her sanity, and her life— in order to defeat the ultimate horror in a terrifying and dying world.

The once vibrant community now faced a silent terror as whispers of a mysterious illness began to echo through the streets. The town of Cresthaven, known for its idyllic landscapes and tight-knit community, now wore a shroud of unease. People grew pale and weary, plagued by a sickness that defied all known remedies. Feverish whispers spoke of loved ones falling into a deep, unnatural slumber, only to awaken with an insatiable hunger for flesh. Enter Dr. Evelyn Everly, a young and determined scientist, who arrived in Cresthaven on the heels of this enigmatic illness. Her inquisitive mind and unwavering determination marked her as a beacon of hope amidst the encroaching despair. With her, stood Marcus, her trusted friend and protector, a stalwart figure with a past shadowed by battles and survival instincts. Dr. Evelyn, driven by an insatiable curiosity and an earnest desire to save lives, set up a makeshift laboratory, analyzing blood samples and scouring ancient texts for any clue that might unravel this inexplicable pandemic. Meanwhile, Marcus patrolled the outskirts, witnessing firsthand the eerie transformation of the infected into something beyond human comprehension. With each passing day, the illness spread its tendrils further, claiming more victims. Panic gripped the town as whispers evolved into cries of terror. The once bustling streets now lay desolate, a haunting testament to the relentless march of this unknown affliction. As the situation escalated, Dr. Evelyn and Marcus faced their own internal conflicts. Doubt gnawed at the edges of their resolve, but their shared determination to uncover the truth and save lives forged an unbreakable bond between them. In the midst of their research, Dr. Evelyn stumbled upon a forbidden tome, its pages adorned with ominous symbols. It hinted at an unholy experiment gone awry, an attempt to cheat death that birthed the very plague tormenting Cresthaven—the rise of the undead. Driven by their newfound knowledge of the plague's origin, Dr. Evelyn and Marcus ventured into the heart of Cresthaven, now overrun by the undead. Their encounters with these twisted, flesh-craving beings were chilling. Faces once familiar now contorted into grotesque masks of hunger and despair lurched towards them in the shadows. They fought valiantly, their every step fraught with peril as they navigated through the abandoned streets, dodging the relentless onslaught of the undead. In their battles, Marcus proved to be an unparalleled force, his combat prowess matched only by his unwavering loyalty to protect Dr. Evelyn. Yet, amid the chaos, they encountered glimmers of humanity within the undead – fleeting moments where a distant memory or a semblance of recognition flickered in the eyes of the afflicted. These encounters stirred a bittersweet empathy within Dr. Evelyn, reminding her of the urgency to find a cure and free these tormented souls from their undead prison. As they pressed forward, they discovered the undead weren’t mindless; rather, they seemed drawn to a mysterious energy source pulsating beneath the town square—an energy that appeared to sustain and amplify their undead state. Their determination to end the plague intensified as they delved deeper into the heart of the town, following clues left behind by an ancient prophecy that hinted at a way to sever the undead from their tether to this malevolent energy. Amongst the rubble of an old library, they unearthed a fragment of the prophecy—an inscription detailing the ritual to disrupt the energy source. However, the ritual required a rare elemental substance known as "Ethereal Core," believed to be buried beneath the abandoned laboratory at the town's edge.
