Book excerpt: When young lawyer Ian Sutherland is asked to write a death-bed Will, he has no idea that the dying man, John Field, had been a Royal Marine sniper in the Second World War. Having shot an SS officer, Manfred Fuchs, during the Battle of the Bulge, John Field removed a Luger, a rare Rolex watch and a wallet from his corpse. Field’s dying wish is that Sutherland returns the watch and the wallet to Fuchs’s family. Reluctantly embarking on a journey which firstly takes him to Munich, Sutherland exposes links to Nazi supporting aristocrats at the heart of the British banking establishment and a cover-up of both personal secrets and business impropriety. Falling in love with a German girl along the way, on his return to London, Sutherland is interrogated by Simon Black, head of the German desk at MI6 only to discover that he too has a secret past and a hidden agenda. In the ensuing battle of wits, Sutherland fights to hold on to his integrity even at the risk of his own life.

Book Synopsis Spas and Spa Visiting by : Ian Rotherham
Download or read book Spas and Spa Visiting written by Ian Rotherham and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-10 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British spa came into its own in the Georgian period, with thousands flocking to take the waters at Bath, Cheltenham and Tunbridge Wells as well as numerous other towns. As these towns grew, their reputation as fashionable destinations became as or more important than the benefits of bathing, which in any case often involved immersion in water tainted by dirt and diseases from fellow bathers. Ian D. Rotherham here traces the story of the British spa back to Roman and medieval times, through their heyday in Georgian and Victorian Britain and right up to their decline in the twentieth century and recent revival. With a wealth of colourful illustrations, this book is a perfect introduction to changing attitudes to public bathing and health, and describes the rise of some of Britain's most famous towns.
Download or read book Bandstands written by Paul Rabbitts and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1833, the Select Committee for Public Walks was introduced so that ‘the provision of parks would lead to a better use of Sundays and the replacement of the debasing pleasures.’ Music was seen as an important moral influence and ‘musical cultivation ... the safest and surest method of popular culture’, and it was the eventual introduction of the bandstand which became a significant aspect of the reforming potential of public parks. However, the move from the bull baiting of ‘Merrie England’ to the ordered recreation provided by bandstands has never been fully comprehended. Likewise, the extent of changes in leisure and public entertainment and the impact of music at seaside resorts often revolved around the use of seaside bandstands, with the subsequent growth of coastal resorts. Music in public spaces, and the history and heritage of the bandstand has largely been ignored. Yet in their heyday, there were over 1,500 bandstands in the country, in public parks, on piers and seaside promenades attracting the likes of crowds of over 10,000 in the Arboretum in Lincoln, to regular weekday and weekend concerts in most of London’s parks up until the beginning of the Second World War. Little is really known about them, from their evolution as ‘orchestras’ in the early Pleasure Gardens, the music played within them, to their intricate and ornate ironwork or art deco designs and the impact of the great foundries, their worldwide influence, to the great decline post Second World War and subsequent revival in the late 1990s. This book tells the story of these pavilions made for music, and their history, decline and revival.
