Book excerpt: Richard Nelson uses the familiar tale of Rip Van Winkle as the basis for his epic study of American agrarian reform, the Industrial Revolution, and the labor movement. ..".The play has a smart, engaging premise. Rip Van Winkle's sleep and waking are used to frame a variety of themes: men and women, parents and children, alcoholism, superstition, and, above all, the battle between industry and agriculture in the social history of the Hudson Valley. The style is also interesting: a kind of terse Bondian dialogue in short Brechtian scenes which allow the audience to find its own path between two ends of an imaginative leap..." Book excerpt: This Hardcover edition includes two books: "A Modest Proposal" and "Gulliver's Travels" ! Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" is a satirical essay written to mock the callous and indignant attitude of Ireland's rich towards the poor. In the essay, Swift argues Ireland's economic problems could be lessened by selling poor Irish children as food to the wealthy. First published in 1729, Swift's essay gained international attention as a satire unlike any other published to-date. "A Modest Proposal" helped bring international attention to rising economic uncertainty in Ireland and the plight of the less fortunate. Gulliver's Travels was published in 1726 and is probably the most famous work by Jonathan Swift. It was an instant hit--selling out within a week--and has never been out of print, as well as having been adapted many times. Lemuel Gulliver, an English surgeon on the Antelope, is shipwrecked and washed up on the island of Lilliput, where the inhabitants are less than six inches tall. This part of the book is a thinly veiled attack on the political classes of the time, as the Lilliputians focus on the minutiae of life, most notably the rift which has developed according to which end of a boiled egg gets opened at breakfast--the big end or the little end. On his second recorded journey he is abandoned on an island of giants where he is paraded as a curiosity at local markets and fairs. On his third journey he is marooned by pirates and is rescued by the inhabitants of a floating island devoted to music, mathematics and astronomy. On his final journey he meets the Houyhnhnms, a race of talking horses who have subdued the Yahoos, creatures who resemble humans. On his return to England, Gulliver has a very different outlook on life and views the human race in a very different way. A True Classic that Belongs on Every Bookshelf!

Book excerpt: Dealing with Thomas Paine's Common Sense (1776), John Trumbull's M'Fingal (1776-82), Philip Freneau's "The British-Prison Ship" (1781), J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur's Letters from an American Farmer (1782), and Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle" (1819-20), Steven Blakemore breaks new ground in assessing the strategies of subversion and intertextuality used during the American Revolution. Blakemore also crystallizes the historical contexts that link these works together – contexts that have been missed or overlooked by critics and scholars. The five works additionally illuminate issues of history (The Norman Conquest, the English Civil War, and the French Revolution) and gender as they impinge on American-revolutionary discourse. The result is five new readings of significant revolutionary-era works that suggest fruitful entries into other literatures of the Revolution. Blakemore demonstrates the nexus between literature and history in the revolutionary era and how it created an intertextual dialogue in the formation of the first postcolonial critiques of the British Empire.

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of Room comes a moving set of historical stories spanning centuries and continents. The fascinating characters that roam across the pages of Emma Donoghue's stories have all gone astray: they are emigrants, runaways, drifters, lovers old and new. They are gold miners and counterfeiters, attorneys and slaves. They cross other borders too: those of race, law, sex, and sanity. They travel for love or money, incognito or under duress. With rich historical detail, the celebrated author of Room takes us from puritan Massachusetts to revolutionary New Jersey, antebellum Louisiana to the Toronto highway, lighting up four centuries of wanderings that have profound echoes in the present. Astray offers us a surprising and moving history for restless times.

Book excerpt: Washington Irving-author, ambassador, Manhattanite, and international celebrity-has largely slipped from America's memory, and yet, his creations are still very well known. With a historian's eye for scope and significance, Andrew Burstein returns Irving to the context of his native nineteenth century where he was a major celebrity-both a colorful comic genius and the first name in our national literature. Though he gave his young nation such enduring tales as “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle,” he was far more than one of our nation's most outsized literary talents. Irving was an American original and a citizen of the world.
