Book Synopsis Sacred Music and Liturgical Reform by : Rev. Anthony Ruff, O.S.B.

This book was released on 2022-01-07 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony Ruff, O.S.B., has written a brilliant, comprehensive, well-researched book about the treasures of the Church's musical tradition, and about the transformations brought about by liturgical reform. The liturgy constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium stated many revolutionary principles of liturgical reform. Regarding liturgical music, the Council's decrees mandated, on the one hand, the preservation of the inherited treasury of sacred music, and on the other hand, advocated adaptation and expansion of this treasury to meet the changed requirements of the reformed liturgy. In clear, precise language, he retrieves the Council's neglected teachings on the preservation of the inherited music treasury. He clearly shows that this task is not at odds with good pastoral practice, but is rather an integral part of it. The book proposes an alternate hermeneutic for understanding the Second Vatican Council's teachings on worship music.
Book Synopsis Re-Envisioning Past Musical Cultures by : Peter Jeffery
Download or read book Re-Envisioning Past Musical Cultures written by Peter Jeffery and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying Gregorian chant presents many problems to the researcher because its most important stages of development were not recorded in writing. From the sixth to the tenth century, this form of music existed only in song as medieval musicians relied on their memories and voices to pass each verse from one generation to the next. Peter Jeffery offers an innovative new approach for understanding how these melodies were created, memorized, performed, and modified. Drawing on a variety of disciplines, including anthropology and ethnomusicology, he identifies characteristics of Gregorian chant that closely resemble other oral traditions in non-Western cultures and demonstrates ways music historians can take into account the social, cultural, and anthropological contexts of chant's development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Vatican Council praised the Church's rich patrimony of sacred music and called for its continued liturgical use, with "pride of place" given to Gregorian chant. The Council Fathers also asked for the development of choirs capable of singing beautiful sacred music and the encouragement of the congregation to sing those parts of the Mass proper to them. What is involved in implementing these multiple reforms aimed at drawing the faithful more deeply into the sacrifice of the Mass? This question is expertly addressed in these papers collected by the Congregation for Divine Worship. All of the various authors are noted for their scholarship in or experience with the aspirations for sacred music expressed in the Second Vatican Council's document on the liturgy, Sacrosanctum Conciilium. With depth and candor they discuss the successes, as well as the continued challenges, involved in implementing the liturgical reforms envisioned by the Council Fathers. These papers are sure to make a significant contribution to the current conversation about the important place of music in the worship of God.

Book Synopsis The Critical Nexus by : Charles M. Atkinson
Download or read book The Critical Nexus written by Charles M. Atkinson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-12-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Critical Nexus confronts an important and vexing enigma of early writings on music: why chant, which was understood to be divinely inspired, needed to be altered in order to work within the then-operative modal system. To unravel this mystery, Charles Atkinson creates a broad framework that moves from Greek harmonic theory to the various stages in the transmission of Roman chant, citing numerous music treatises from the sixth to the twelfth century. Out of this examination emerges the central point behind the problem: the tone-system advocated by writers coming from the Greek harmonic tradition was not suited to the notation of chant and that this basic incompatibility led to the creation of new theoretical constructs. By tracing the path of subsequent adaptation at the nexus of tone-system, mode, and notation, Atkinson promises new and far-reaching insights into what mode meant to the medieval musician and how the system responded to its inherent limitations. Through a detailed examination of the major musical treatises from the sixth through the twelfth centuries, this text establishes a central dichotomy between classical harmonic theory and the practices of the Christian church. Atkinson builds the foundation for a broad and original reinterpretation of the modal system and how it relates to melody, grammar, and notation. This book will be of interest to all musicologists, music theorists working on mode, early music specialists, chant scholars, and medievalists interested in music.
