Book Synopsis Assuming the Light by : Stephen Henighan
Download or read book Assuming the Light written by Stephen Henighan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Miguel Angel Asturias (1899-1974), the first Spanish-American prose writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, is both a pivotal and a representative figure in the development of the twentieth-century Spanish-American novel. Asturias's literary apprenticeship in the Paris of the 1920s and 1930s is arguably the most crucial and least understood period of his career. In forging his definitions of Guatemalan cultural identity and Spanish-American modernity from a French vantage point, Asturias made literary innovations and generated cultural paradoxes which have proved central to subsequent generations of writers. This study of Asturias's early academic writings, journalism and short fiction, and of his first major novel, ""El se""or presidente, provides a prehistory of the contemporary Spanish-American novel."

Download or read book La Casona de los Siete Balcones written by Cris Martinez and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Performing Memories by : Gabriele Biotti
Download or read book Performing Memories written by Gabriele Biotti and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is memory today? How can it be approached? Why does the contemporary world seem to be more and more haunted by different types of memories still asking for elaboration? Which artistic experiences have explored and defined memory in meaningful ways? How do technologies and the media have changed it? These are just some of the questions developed in this collection of essays analysing memory and memory shapes, which explores the different ways in which past time and its elaboration have been, and still are, elaborated, discussed, written or filmed, and contested, but also shared. By gathering together scholars from different fields of investigation, this book explores the cultural, social and artistic tensions in representing the past and the present, in understanding our legacies, and in approaching historical time and experience. Through the analysis of different representations of memory, and the investigation of literature, anthropology, myth and storytelling, a space of theories and discourses about the symbolic and cultural spaces of memory representation is developed.

Book Synopsis Terror in the Land of the Holy Spirit by : Virginia Garrard-Burnett
Download or read book Terror in the Land of the Holy Spirit written by Virginia Garrard-Burnett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1982 and 1983, in the name of anti-communism the military government of Guatemala prosecuted a scorched-earth campaign of terror against largely Mayan rural communities. Under the leadership of General Efrain Rios Montt, tens of thousands of people perished in what is now known as la violencia, or 'the Mayan holocaust.' Rios Montt, Guatemala's president-by-coup was, and is, an outspokenly born-again Pentecostal Christian - a fact that would seem to be at odds with the atrocities that took place on his watch. Virginia Garrard-Burnett's book is the first in English to view the Rios Montt era through the lens of history. Drawing on newly-available primary sources such as guerrilla documents, evangelical pamphlets, speech transcripts, and declassified US government records, she is able to provide a fine-grained picture of what happened during Rios Montt's rule. Looking back over Guatemalan history between 1954 and the late 1970s, she finds that three decades of war engendered an ideology of violence that cut across class, cultures, communities, religions, and even families. Many Guatemalans converted to Pentecostalism during this period, she says, because of the affinity between these churches' apocalyptic message and the violence of their everyday reality. Examining the role of outside players and observers: The US government, evangelical groups, and the media, she contends that self-interest, willful ignorance, and distraction permitted the human rights tragedies within Guatemala to take place without challenge from the outside world.
