Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/nord2023-020/ Rights-based analysis related to children and young people (RBA) is a tool that helps assess the impact of our activities on children and young people (0-25 years old). Use it when you are developing, implementing, or evaluating a Nordic initiative and when you want to integrate a child rights and youth perspective into your work. The tool contains different forms tailored to different activities and is for those working within or on behalf of the Nordic Council of Ministers. By turning your analysis into action, you support the objective of giving children and young people a stronger voice and participation in the Nordic co-operation.

Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/nord2020-047/ “The Nordic region must be the best place in the world for children and young people.” This is the vision of the Nordic Council of Ministers as expressed in its cross-sector strategy for children and young people in the Nordic region. The 0–25 age group is a prioritised target group in the strategy. A key objective in the strategy is that the Nordic Council of Ministers will increasingly integrate a child rights and youth perspective in its work, thereby raising the level of participation of children and young people. The objective is based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, but also on a conviction that today’s projects and activities would be improved when children and young people participate and exert influence in various ways. Decisions would also be given greater legitimacy, and initiatives would be of higher quality and relevant to more people when the perspective of children and young people is incorporated.

Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/politiknord2023-724/ In early 2016 the Nordic Council of Ministers established a new cross-sectoral strategy for children and young people. This strategy has now been extended to 2024, with minor updates. The strategy lays down the vision for the Nordic Council of Ministers’ efforts relating to children and young people: that the Nordic Region must be the best place in the world for children and young people. The objective of efforts relating to children and young people in the Nordic Region is to establish good living conditions and improve their opportunity for influence. The right to good living conditions and influence must be promoted equally for all children and young people regardless of their gender, ethnic, cultural or socioeconomic background, age, place of origin, sexual orientation, or disability.

Book excerpt: 2010 is the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. In honour of this, we present in this publication 23 selected articles about children's involvement in the Nordic countries and in the self-governing territories of Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Åland. The articles illustrate a broad spectrum of models for participation as applied in central arenas in everyday lives of children and young people: pre-schools and schools, culture and local environment, and in political decisions. We have also included articles that concern the involvement of children and young people with experiences as clients in the welfare support system. An important goal is that these examples will serve as inspiration and toolkits for others who work with children and young people. This publication was produced by Norwegian Social Research (NOVA) as commissioned by the Nordic Committee for Children and Young People (NORDBUK) at the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The indicators show how far the region has come but also illustrate challenges that remain to be addressed in terms of demography, family and care, health, education, the labour market and income, as well as leisure and culture. This data will hopefully be useful for anyone seeking reliable and comparable data on children and young people in the Nordics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a comparative study of children’s constitutional rights in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The authors discuss the value of enshrining children’s rights in national constitutions in addition to implementing the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Central issues are whether enshrining children’s rights in the Constitution improves implementation and enforcement of those rights by providing advocacy tools and by mandating courts, legislators, policy-makers and practitioners to take children’s rights seriously. The study assesses whether the Nordic constitutions are in line with the child rights approach of the CRC both on a general level and in detail in three domains; the best interests of the child, participation rights, and the right to respect for family life.

Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/nord2023-004/ Social media platforms have become integral democratic infrastructure. However, such online platforms and their algorithmic functions may cause serious harm to our democracies and public debate. Hate speech online may lead certain groups in society to withdraw from public debate, and the spread of mis- and disinformation threatens open and factual democratic debate and can fuel polarisation. The vision of the Nordic Think Tank for Tech and Democracy for the Nordics is to be a united tech-democratic region, with thriving citizens and open and informed public debate taking place across different spaces and with vigilant public oversight over democratic infrastructure, building resilience to already strong Nordic public spheres. The Nordic Think Tank for Tech and Democracy proposes the following recommendations to protect and strengthen the democratic debate in the age of Big Tech.

Book excerpt: In this book academics, practitioners and scholars from all over the planet present relatively heterogeneous perspectives to produce something of the homogenous whole that youth work might be understood to be. This promotes the understanding that to lock down youth work in notional stasis (bolt it into a ‘carceral archipelago’) would be the antithesis of practice, which would effectively destroy it as youth work. Other writers have effectively tried to achieve just this, or perhaps identified (put a flag in) what they see (or want to be) the ‘core’ of youth work practice. But youth work is not an apple. A global and historical perspective of youth work shows it to be a relentlessly developing range of responses to a persistently growing and shifting range of phenomena, issues and directions presented by and to societies and the young people in those societies. Here the authors offer a set of responses from within the incessantly metamorphosing field that can generically be called ‘youth work; they do this in this time, from many places and a diversity of identities, but they all identify what they present professionally and/or academically with what they agree to be the glorious rainbow palette that youth work is.

The results show that Nordic citizens are concerned about the trends and believe that climate change and the environment is the most important area of co-operation for the Nordic region. There is also a lot of variation in what citizens think the best measures are and in the extent to which they believe that politicians can solve the climate crisis. The report highlights both challenges and opportunities for the Nordic democracies in their work for the climate and environment of the future

Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/politiknord2022-724/ In 2019, the Nordic prime ministers adopted a vision for the Nordic Region to be the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by the year 2030. The Nordic Council of Ministers was tasked with steering Nordic co-operation towards delivering this vision. The Nordic Council of Ministers is following a special action plan in its efforts relating to the vision for the period 2021 to 2024. Now, after almost two years, a mid-point evaluation has been produced. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine during the period, the Nordic Council of Ministers has delivered concrete results and made an impact. The activities of the Nordic Council of Ministers are being steered towards supporting the Nordic countries as well as possible in their realisation of the vision. Efforts relating to the green transition have been bolstered by way of DKK 120 million in additional funding thanks to a budget redistribution in the period 2021 to 2024. The mid-point evaluation was approved by the Ministers for Nordic Co-operation in September 2022.
