Book excerpt: An emotionally evocative, richly textured history based on autobiographical accounts of those who lived and shaped the struggle. The importance of many of Rogers' subjects and the uniqueness of New Orleans make this must reading for anyone interested in the history of the movement. But those interested in oral history and African-American autobiography will find riches aplenty as well. A welcome addition to a number of literatures --Doug McAdam, author of Freedom Summer Righteous Lives skillfully blends oral history with a perceptive analysis of three generations of civil rights leadership in New Orleans. Rogers has revealed not only what people did, but what they remember, and how their assessments of their activism have changed over time. --Donald A. Ritchie, U.S. Senate Historical Office "Rogers paints a slightly less rosy picture, one in which the Louisiana un-American Activities Committee staged a raid on the offices of the Southern Conference Educational Fund (SCEF), and the City Council passed laws prohibiting the right to peaceful assembly, paving the way to jailing protesters." —Gambit Weekly This important study provides fresh insights into the lives of both black and white civil rights leaders, documents the diversity of individuals and motivations, and traces movement history in a major southern city. Well written and well researched, this book is highly recommended for readers at all levels. --Choice Charts the distinctly different experiences and memories of 25 black and white civil rights activists of three 'generations' in New Orleans, opening with a deft sketch of the city's unusual racial background with its black Creole caste. --Publishers Weekly An important study, full of valuable information, profoundly moving testimony, and provocative insights. --The Journal of Southern History A major contribution to our understanding of the civil rights movement. RIGHTEOUS LIVES illustrates the complexity of movements for social change, the long history of seemingly spontaneous conflicts, and the personal consequences of political activism. Rogers reveals how issues of caste and class, of gender and generation divided the black community in New Orleans, while her in-depth interviews and observations bring to the surface previously unexamined contradictions within the white southern experience as well. RIGHTEOUS LIVES also offers perceptive and thought-provoking insights into broader issues of collective and individual memory, life history, and autobiography. It evokes the struggle for African-American self-determination in the Crescent City with clarity and conviction, and it stands as a fitting testimonial to the courageous men and women whose voices provide so much of the book's fascinating narratives and textures. -- George Lipsitz, University of California, San Diego When former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke campaigned for governor in late 1991, race relations in Louisiana were thrust dramatically into the national spotlight. New Orleans, the political and economic hub of the state, is in many ways representative of Louisiana's unique racial mix, a fusion of African-American, Caribbean, European, and white Southern cultures. An old, colorful port famous for its French and Spanish heritage, distinctive architecture, and jazz, New Orleans was a peculiarly segregated city in the 1950s and 1960s. Yet, despite its complicated racial and ethnic identity and heated desegregation battles, New Orleans, unlike other Southern cities such as Birmingham, did not explode. In this moving work, Kim Rogers tells the stories, in their own words, of the New Orleans' civil rights workers who fought to deter the racial terrorism that scarred much of the South in the 1950s and 1960s. Spanning three generations of activists, RIGHTEOUS LIVES traces the risks, triumphs, and disappointments that characterized the lives of New Orleans activists. Chronicling watershed moments in the movement, Rogers' compelling narrative illustrates how blacks and whites worked together to decompress the tensions that accompanied desegregation in the ethnic mosaic of New Orleans.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The acclaimed social psychologist challenges conventional thinking about morality, politics, and religion in a way that speaks to conservatives and liberals alike—a “landmark contribution to humanity’s understanding of itself” (The New York Times Book Review). Drawing on his twenty-five years of groundbreaking research on moral psychology, Jonathan Haidt shows how moral judgments arise not from reason but from gut feelings. He shows why liberals, conservatives, and libertarians have such different intuitions about right and wrong, and he shows why each side is actually right about many of its central concerns. In this subtle yet accessible book, Haidt gives you the key to understanding the miracle of human cooperation, as well as the curse of our eternal divisions and conflicts. If you’re ready to trade in anger for understanding, read The Righteous Mind.

It also goes on to show you what transpires in the new birth, what must be done in order for you to grow effectually in Christ and build a prosperous life while living in love, peace and joy of the Holy Ghost. It also outlines three things the church must be willing to do in order to enjoy the manifestations of God through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

I believe that if they have available resources and literatures like this, they will help them to navigate and jump-start their journey. Furthermore, those who are already in the faith do sometimes feel lost at some point in their journey, and this is why I believe this book will be a tremendous help to new and growing believers in the Lord to improve their understanding of the life expected of them by God. The book is about righteous living. It details the expectations of God from all believers who want to walk with Him. It also contains information on how to maintain a life of righteousness and things to do in order to remain steadfast, instead of growing weak or weary. The book also gives a brief understanding of God’s view of a righteous man and why God intended this life for all that will walk with Him. This book also includes some practice questions to refresh reader’s memories and ensure adequate comprehension of their reading.

Book excerpt: The central themes of Romans are “the Gospel” and “the righteousness of God.” The Book of Romans provides a clear and detailed explanation of how sinners, destined for hell due to their sins, can receive the remission of sins and become righteous. No one can be justified before God by merely keeping the Law. However, anyone can experience spiritual rebirth and obtain salvation through the remission of sins by placing their faith in “the righteousness of God,” which is abundantly revealed in the Gospel of truth. So, what kind of faith makes us born again as righteous? It is the faith of Abraham “who, contrary to hope, in hope believed” (Romans 4:18) in God's Promise. Attaining righteousness apart from sin is a divine work that we cannot achieve on our own, and Jesus Christ accomplished this grace unilaterally. Because God the Father, who loves us deeply, understands that we cannot free ourselves from sin and become righteous on our own, He unilaterally blotted out all our sins on our behalf. How did God remove our sins? God the Father sent His Only Begotten Son, Jesus, in the same human flesh as us. Jesus is God Himself, who came as the Lamb without blemish to atone for our sins. Jesus ordered John the Baptist to baptize Him, saying, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15). He received baptism from John in the form of laying on of hands, taking upon Himself the sins of the world at once. Thus, all the sins of the world were transferred to the flesh of Jesus. Therefore, on the day following Jesus' baptism, John the Baptist declared to his disciples, while pointing to Jesus passing by, saying, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) Jesus bore the sins of the world through the baptism He underwent and went to the cross. After being crucified and shedding all His blood on the cross, the Lord Jesus cried out loudly with His final breath, saying, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). He rose from the dead after three days. Jesus “came by water and blood” (1 John 5:6-8) to redeem and cleanse us from all our sins. The truth that Jesus atoned for all world’s sins through His baptism and the shedding of His blood on the cross is known as the Gospel of the water and the blood, the Original Gospel. Christians can truly comprehend the Book of Romans within the context of the Original Gospel. Sadly, in today's Christianity, the truth of Jesus' baptism has been lost. Those who rely solely on the partial gospel, centered only on the blood of the cross, can never fully grasp or live by the teachings of Romans. As you read through the two volumes of “Sermons on Romans,” my earnest desire is that you, the readers, will firmly stand upon the foundation of the Original Gospel, believe in the righteousness of God, and become righteous servants who proclaim it. Our Lord Jesus also strongly desires that you move “from faith to faith” (Romans 1:17).

Book excerpt: For many of us, the attempt to live for God can leave us feeling burdened rather than free. Yet that's not the kind of life God intends for us to experience. What if he never meant for us to try so hard? What if overcoming sin doesn't rely on our own self-control? What if loving others isn't about saying and doing all the right things? What if suffering isn't designed to teach us lessons? What if we could feel closer to God without doing anything? In God's Best-Kept Secret, the founder of Grace Life International explodes our preconceived notions of living the Christian life, freeing us to stop just going through the motions and to experience true fulfillment. Illuminating commonly misunderstood Bible verses, Mark Maulding shows us that following God is not as complicated as we often make it out to be. And, in fact, the answer to our struggles has been hiding in plain sight all along.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first comparative study of Colossians and 1 Peter, the book fills a lacuna by exploring each author’s understanding of the new existence and the means to righteous living. If the epistles end up offering almost identical paraenesis, why do they have such distinctive theological patterns of thought? The conventional starting point in Colossian and 1 Peter studies centers on the recipients’ needs. Much has been learned from these investigations and is kept in view. However, the extent to which each epistle’s theology reflects an underlying pattern of ideas within each author’s worldview is less well understood. Setting the author’s views in the context of the literature of early Judaism throws fresh light on his thought-world and understanding of the new existence and moral enablement. Evidence exists which indicates that streams of traditions in Early Judaism Literature, factors other than the recipients’ needs, contribute to the theology within each epistle and may account for distinctive aspects identified between Colossians and 1 Peter. Exploration of 4QInstruction and the Hodayot, texts discovered at Qumran, provides precedents, precursors, and parallels for the distinctive emphases investigated. Thus, they shed new light on each epistle.

Are you seeking to find a closer relationship with God? Is your life in turmoil, and you struggle with no idea where to turn? Life is not easy to navigate. I know! I struggled with habits that carried into my adult life. I had trouble with jobs, trouble with relationships, trouble with finances. You name it! Everything in my life became a struggle. In 2012, at the age of sixty-five, I found the Lord and dedicated my life to Jesus Christ. But this is not a story about me. Rather, the Handbook for Righteous Living is a manual for navigating life to put it simply. The goal is to help you find a better life; to improve your relationship with others; to become successful in your endeavors; to find peace, joy, and strength, and a love for others that you have never experienced. There are no guarantees along the way. What you draw from this manual is up to you. You may have heard the old saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” Whether or not you grow is based on your application of these principles. Whether you develop a relationship with Jesus Christ will be determined by your faith, practice, and love and trust in God.

Book excerpt: The righteousness of God is given to the born-again believers who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Believers are the righteousness of God because they are "in Christ." Being "in Christ," believers can live a righteous life in our changing world. Believers are justified by God's grace through the redemption that is "in Christ." They renew their minds in the Word of God, which transforms their minds so they can live a righteous life. Believers who are "in Christ" will not conform to this world's patterns and behaviors. They are "the just," and "the just" lives by faith in Jesus Christ alone. Believers have righteous attitudes because of their faith "in Jesus Christ" and in the Word of God, which helps them live a pleasing life before God in order to have peace with God and themselves. Believers' attitudes determine their thoughts, their thoughts determine what they say, and their words determine their results or their reality. Therefore, believers can live righteous in our changing world because they are led by the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, which is their final authority, and they have the mind of Christ.

Book excerpt: Considered an expert about the Book of Enoch, Dr. Randy Delp has put together an analysis of this ancient book to explain why Jesus and the New Testament writers were not only influenced by the Book of Enoch, they quoted its contents, cited its texts and labeled it Scripture. The teachings of Enoch have influenced every major monotheistic religion including Islam, Judaism, Christianity and Zoroastrianism and vestiges can be found in Hinduism, and other ancient religions. The footprints of his teachings are seen throughout every generation and the finality of his message has yet to be fulfilled. Enochs influence in astronomy, history, religion, education, and para-psychology has forged how society thinks today. It is significant to note that the prophet named Enoch, who was born seven generations after Adam and Eve, may be the only person in history who has had a positive effect on every major and minor religion, while nothing negative is ever spoken about him.
