This inquiry, often repeated, and the controversy which there has been of late over reminiscences of turf history of forty or fifty years ago, have emboldened me to try to amuse my patrons and friends with an account of a few incidents and stories of a more modern date, which have come within my own experience of the turf, an experience which extends over the past thirty-six years, and must be the justification of my attempt. I must ask my readers not to consider my book from a literary point of view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Turf Recollections and Other Sketches To say that the decision raised a row would be put ting it altogether too mild. The crowd jeered and hooted, hissed and yelled, and at one time it looked exceedingly dangerous for the weak-backed men on the stand who had allowed themselves to be persuaded into doing a rank injustice. It was difficult to understand why they had so ruled. No complaint of foul riding had been made by the jockey on King Tom, and had such been done and proven, it would have demanded the punishment of the winner, but no such objection was raised; they awarded the race as the horses finished, yet without stating any reason, declared the bets off. Afterwards evidence was forthcoming which showed the reason why. A certain London merchant, now dead, had been wining rather freely over night, and being a strong King Tom man, backed his favorite for about The result of the race staggered him and he straightway got a friend or two together, besieged the judges' box, and induced them to declare the bets 05. It was the only really unpleasant occurrence I can remember in connection with the old time meetings at Newmarket, but candor compels me to declare that it was one of the rankest decisions ever given on any race course, and in almost any other section of the country would have earned a jolly good mobbing for the judges guilty of such a trick. It is pleasant to remember that outside of the little ring influenced by the merchant alluded to, every other Londoner who had bet his money on King Tom, was ashamed of the manner in which he had been relieved of the necessity to pay his losses. Whyte-melville was born in 1821 and went, in process of time, to Eton, after the manner of many of his kind. The reputation of Eton for scholarship never, perhaps, exceedingly high, was probably at its lowest in the thirties yet, as has happened to other boys who have passed in and out of her gates without distinction, young George acquired in that school a loving reverence for Latin writers which endured throughout his life and left its stamp on all his writings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pierce Egan's Book of Sports, and Mirror of Life: Embracing the Turf, the Chase, the Ring, and the Stage; Interspersed With Original Memoirs of Sporting Men, Etc Our horses would fare badly on the scanty nourishment afforded the Arabian. The mare usually has but one or two meals in twenty four hours. During the day she is tied to the door of the tent, ready for the Bedouin to spring, at a moment's warning, into the saddle; or she is turned out before the tent, ready sad died, the bridle merely taken off, and so trained that she ga110ps up immediately at her master's call. At night she receives a little water; and with her scanty provender of five or six pounds of barley or beans, and some times a little straw, she lies down, content, in the midst of her master's family. She can, however, endure great fatigue; she will travel fifty miles without stopping; she has been pushed, on emergency, one hundred and twenty miles, and, occasionally, neither she nor her rider has tasted food for three whole days. To the Arabian, principally, England is indebted for her improved and now unrivalled breed of horses for the turf, the field, and the road. Not only are contemporary events enthusiastically fol lowed, but racing history itself is often discussed with an ardour that would gladden the hearts of bygone Turf celebrities were they alive now. In the hope that it may revive memories for the older section of racegoers, and be instructive to the younger generation, this volume has been written. I often wonder if it is generally realised how numer ous are the former. Habitues of the various race meetings are among the healthiest and longest living people in the country. The average man who attends a race meeting seldom realises the immense mental and physical benefit thus obtained. The fresh air, the spirit of cheery good-fellowship that pervades almost every gathering of racing folk, and the excitement of watching varying phases of a race, are to me the finest tonic in the world, and I have seldom left a racecourse without feeling well braced up in mind and body. Whether the present generation will rival their racing forebears in the matter of longevity is a debatable point. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Turf B 2despised, but the great point is whether the horse has speed, stamina, constitution, soundness, and other attributes calculated to render its offspring worthy upholders of the family; and this can only be ascer tained by submitting the animals to the ordeal of preparation and testing them on the course. An infusion of thoroughbred blood confers special and peculiar benefits on those so endowed, whether chargers, hunters, hacks, or carriage horses. The fact has been constantly made obvious when horses of what may be described as the royal strain have drifted out of their own class and been put to try conclusions with their coarser bred cousins. The blood horse - thoroughbred or even half-bred - that comes to carry a soldier or a sportsman in the hunting-field may not have the size and scope of some of his companions, and may not look so well able to bear weight; but as a very general rule his action and courage will unmistakably prove what his breeding signifies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Gladiateur to Persimmon: Turf Memories of Thirty Years To cover the ground thoroughly between 1865 and 1896 would necessitate the production of about half-a-dozen volumes the size of this one, and I have thought it wiser to give as complete histories as possible of a few great horses, rather than to produce hasty and unfinished sketches of three or four times the number. I have devoted myself almost exclusively to horses rather than to men. In the first place, I may frankly confess to regarding the former as infinitely the more inter esting of the two, and, in the second, it is possible to write perfectly freely and truthfully about them without any serious fear of giving offence. When one is dealing with men the case is altogether different. If they are still living, a plain and un varnished tale of the careers of some few of them would probably lead to libel actions, whilst I Should be reluctant indeed to write one word against any of those who have gone from us. De mortuis nil nisi bonum is a maxim in which I am a firm believer, though I do not interpret it to mean that, because a man is dead, it is necessary to write a fulsome eulogy of him, but rather that, where it is not possible to give honest praise, a discreet silence should be preserved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Turf: With Anecdotes and Recollections of Its Principals Celebrities The very favourable reception accorded to 'The Racehorse in Training' induces me to appear before the public again as the writer of my Reminiscences. It is a work that aims to deal in a plain fashion with matters of importance to all those who have an interest in the turf, and relies solely for its success on its truthful simplicity and its impartial mode of dealing with the diverse subjects which come under consideration. It is partly biographical, partly anecdotal; and in the portions which treat of trials and the stable, has its technical or professional side. The biographical sketches have, I hope, in most cases the charm of novelty to recommend them, either in the subject itself or in their treatment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Turf Fora decade more than the three score years and ten allotted by a gracious Providence to man I have been awaiting the solemn call which comes to all human kind to weigh in, and then to the great Steward make account of the use to which I put the opportunities that came to me. In the active competition of life, when rivalries were keen, when ambitions created new fields and contests kept alert both mind and body, there was little time, indeed, to do more than merely store away in unclassified groups in memory events and incidents each one deserving of a sep arate chapter. To write a history of the American turf had long been a cherished project, but each day of a life of practically unremitting and exacting labor interfered until the westering sun of my eightieth year warns me that I must be up and doing if I would achieve my cherished ambition and leave behind me something which I trust will be worthy tribute to the best and the noblest sport that it is given to man to enjoy. If in the chapters which are to come there should be noted a tone of enthusiastic optimism, let the reader realize that sixty-five years of my life were spent in the activities oi the turf as a jockey, a trainer and an owner; that I have seen, and in many of them personally participated, practically all of. The great contests which gave fame to our thorough breds; that I have traveled on foot through valleys and over mountains, when but rough paths pointed the way between places now drawn close together by the bands of great trunk line railroads, leading the horse that was on conquest bent; that I spent weary weeks on journeys that now would be but the occupation of one brief day of luxurious travel; thati have seen the upward and the onward progress which has marked the rise of the thoroughbred in America from a little meet in some isolated though sport-loving place to the magnificent seasons of Belmont Park. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Turf: A Record of Horses and Courses Such a period cannot be otherwise than propitious for the production of a work in which every subject is dealt with that can interest those who, in one form or another, to a greater or less extent find an attraction in the Turf. Books about racing have a not unnatural habit of being reminiscent here, for a change, is one that deals with things as they are. That entirely new ground is broken will be at once apparent to those conversant with racing literature. For one thing a work of this nature has previously not been possible, because the conditions favourable to its compilation have not existed; but no one has even attempted the comprehensive task which the author has accomplished. The reader has set before him the characteristics of every racecourse in England, and of the racing that each year takes place upon it. Although less numerous than they were half a century ago, English racecourses are still many, and no two are alike either in conformation or in the sport provided and its management. These are the details which receive treatment, the writer's wide personal experience being in every case brought into play. References to the actors upon the stage, human and equine, form a natural corollary. When we read about historical racecourses we like to hear of the celebrated races associated with them and of the great horses that earned their reputations by winning them.
