Book excerpt: A bitter struggle is brewing between the big cattlemen and the small nesters in the Buck River country. The hard-bitten Calhoun Terry, who used to be a small-time cowboy, has come to believe that the big ranches are better able to develop the country than the small cattlemen. Joining his small ranch to the larger Diamond Reverse B in exchange for the position as manager of the larger ranch seemed like an excellent move for him, but it has aroused the resentment of the cowpunchers and nesters who were once his friends.

Book Synopsis Where the Mockingbird Sang by : David Wilson Atwood
Download or read book Where the Mockingbird Sang written by David Wilson Atwood and published by David Wilson Atwood. This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All choices have consequences; some very little, while others reach through the years and affect the lives of subsequent generations. Where the Mockingbird Sang, set in the Arkansas Ozarks before, during, and after the Civil War is an intriguing tale of lust, war, capture and imprisonment, escape, betrayal, family, and the ability of good and love to triumph over the horrors of war. Evans Atwood is a warrior in the Confederate Army who serves with honor. Through him the story of so many who gave their hearts and sacrificed so much dear to them to be able to provide and protect freedom and their right to self determination comes to life. These men and women are forever changed as are those who are left behind to suffer other horrors and evil that war brings. Evans teaches school at the Primitive Baptist Church in Shiloh, Arkansas where he meets Lucy Jane Roberts, a beautiful transplant from eastern Tennessee. With her beauty and her designs on a better life, she sweeps him along a course that will change his life and the lives of all around him. Due to Lucy's seduction of Evans, and the resulting pregnancy, he chooses her over his lifelong friend, neighbor, and love, Susan Wilson. All is well with the young couple until the challenges of war come into their lives. Evans and his wandering, older, back woods friend, Nathanial James Buchanan or Buck, are certain, as are soldiers on both sides of the conflict that the war will only last a few months. Evans leaves Lucy Jane with eighteen month old Martha Jane and six week old James Calvin when he and Buck enlist in the 15th Arkansas Infantry to secure the freedoms they long for.
Download or read book DC Rider written by Richard C. Harrison and published by Pentland Press (NC). This book was released on 2001 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DC Rider follows the life of a man named Buck Buckley. After years and years of inflation and wasteful energy consumption, Buck wakes up to a world the likes of which he has never seen, an America whose major functions have completely shut down. There is no electricity, banks have shut down, the nation's food supplies are low, all of which in turn creates a ruthless and savage nation. Trying to find a way out of the great catastrophe, he heads north by bus, until the bus runs out of gas and signals a new life for Buck Buckley.Stranded on an Amish farm, Buck spends the next few years learning how to use and depend on nature before setting out west to start his own farm. Before reaching his destination, however, he is drawn back to his hometown of Washington, DC, which is now in shambles. The government is still intact and functioning, but its job is made almost impossible due to the loss of its ability to communicate with the nation's citizens. Police forces have ceased to patrol, and local thugs have taken over the communities. Feeling compassion for his former home, he begins his adventure of trying to bring the torn community together. He finds opposition in a variety of forms, but he alone rises to the fight in an effort to restore freedom to the heart of the nation.Richard Cortland Harrison does an wonderful job of painting a picture of this new world in the mind of the reader. His descriptive narration is superb, and he adds a little of something for everyone. DC Rider contains action, murder, romance, and humor, and all of it makes for a very compelling read.

Book Synopsis Westerns and American Culture, 1930-1955 by : R. Philip Loy
Download or read book Westerns and American Culture, 1930-1955 written by R. Philip Loy and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people have fond memories of Friday nights and Saturday afternoons spent in theatres watching cowboy stars of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s chase villains across the silver screen or help a heroine out of harm's way. Over 2,600 Westerns were produced between 1930 and 1955 and they became a defining part of American culture. This work focuses on the idea that Westerns were one of the vehicles by which viewers learned the values and norms of a wide range of social relationships and behavior, and thus examines the ways in which Western movies reflected American life and culture during this quarter century. Chapters discuss such topics as the ways that Westerns included current events in film plot and dialogue, reinforced the role of Christianity in American culture, reflected the emergence of a strong central government, and mirrored attitudes toward private enterprise. Also covered is how Westerns represented racial minorities, women, and Indians.

Book excerpt: “Fantasy as it ought to be written . . . Robin Hobb’s books are diamonds in a sea of zircons.”—George R. R. Martin Prince Dutiful has been rescued from his Piebald kidnappers and the court has resumed its normal rhythms. There FitzChivalry Farseer, gutted by the loss of his wolf bondmate, must take up residence at Buckkeep as a journeyman assassin. Posing as a bodyguard, Fitz becomes the eyes and ears behind the walls, guiding a kingdom straying closer to civil strife each day. Amid a multitude of problems, Fitz must ensure that no one betrays the Prince’s secret—one that could topple the throne: that he, like Fitz, possesses the dread “beast magic.” Only Fitz’s friendship with the Fool brings him solace. But even that is shattered when devastating revelations from the Fool’s past are exposed. Bereft of support and adrift in intrigue, Fitz finds that his biggest challenge may be simply to survive. Praise for Robin Hobb and Golden Fool “[Robin Hobb] ranks near the top of the high fantasy field. . . . [She] juggles all the balls with aplomb, besides providing spot-on characterizations.”—Publishers Weekly “Solid storytelling with warmth and heart.”—The Kansas City Star
