Download or read book Skinhead written by Richard Allen and published by Dean Street Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen-year-old Joe Hawkins is the anti-hero's anti-hero. His life is ruled by clothes, beer, football and above all violence - violence against hippies, authority, racial minorities and anyone else unfortunate enough to get in his way. Joe is a London skinhead - a member of a uniquely British subculture which arose rapidly in the late 1960's. While other skins were driven mainly by music, fashion and working-class pride, Joe and his mob use their formidable street style as a badge of aggressive rage, even while Joe dreams of making a better life for himself. Lacerating in its depiction of violence and sex, often shocking by today's standards, Skinhead is also a provocative cross-section of urban British society. It doesn't spare the hypocrisy, corruption or excessive permissiveness which, the author believed, allowed the extremist wing of skinhead culture to flourish. Skinhead, first published in 1970 and a huge cult bestseller, is now available for the first time in ebook form, with a new introduction by Andrew Stevens. Nearly fifty years on, it remains one of the most potent artefacts of British popular culture ever committed to print. "I did happen to read the book when it came out and I was quite interested in the whole Richard Allen cult... suedeheads and skinheads and smoothies were very much part of daily life. There was a tremendous air of intensity... something interesting grabbed me about the whole thing." Morrissey "(Richard Allen's) work shouldn't require a theoretical summing up, once enough of those to whom it appeals understand its attraction we will have superceded this society." Stewart Home

Download or read book Suedehead written by Richard Allen and published by Dean Street Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skinheads were dead, man. Phased out. Home had never appealed. All his life he had dreamed about a plush flat somewhere in the West End of London. So now he would make the leap from poverty street into the affluent society. In one gigantic jump. Fresh out of stir after kicking a police sergeant's head in, former skinhead Joe Hawkins is heading for the big time - a job in a firm of stockbrokers, a swanky flat and (hopefully) plenty of money. A whole new style is called for - so Joe becomes a Suedehead. The hair is a few millimetres longer, the uniform a velvet-collared crombie coat, bowler hat and neatly-furled umbrella - with razor sharp tip. For while Joe might be playing the establishment pet, he remains the unrepentently vicious, cunning hooligan from Skinhead, intent on pulling women, stealing and putting the boot in. It's not long before he finds some other Suedes willing to commit mayhem under cover of respectability... but can Joe and respectability ever really get along? Suedehead is the second of Richard Allen's era-defining cult novels featuring anti-hero Joe Hawkins. First published in 1971, this new edition features an introduction by Andrew Stevens. "I did happen to read the book when it came out and I was quite interested in the whole Richard Allen cult... suedeheads and skinheads and smoothies were very much part of daily life. There was a tremendous air of intensity... something interesting grabbed me about the whole thing." Download or read book AFRICOBRA written by Wadsworth A. Jarrell and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formed on the South Side of Chicago in 1968 at the height of the civil rights, Black power, and Black arts movements, the AFRICOBRA collective created a new artistic visual language rooted in the culture of Chicago's Black neighborhoods. The collective's aesthetics, especially the use of vibrant color, capture the rhythmic dynamism of Black culture and social life. In AFRICOBRA, painter, photographer, and collective cofounder Wadsworth A. Jarrell tells the definitive story of the group's creation, history, and artistic and political principles. From accounts of the painting of the groundbreaking Wall of Respect mural and conversations among group members to documentation of AFRICOBRA's exhibits in Chicago, New York, and Boston, Jarrell outlines how the collective challenged white conceptions of art by developing an artistic philosophy and approach wholly divested of Western practices. Featuring nearly one hundred color images of artworks, exhibition ephemera, and photographs, this book is at once a sourcebook history of AFRICOBRA and the story of visionary artists who rejected the white art establishment in order to create uplifting art for all Black people.

Book Synopsis Film Theory and Philosophy by : Richard Allen
Download or read book Film Theory and Philosophy written by Richard Allen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While concepts from and debates within Continental philosophy have long formed a backdrop to arguments in film theory and criticism, exchanges between Anglo-American `analytic' philosophy and film studies have been relatively few and far between. In recent years this has begun to change, as the consensus around semiotic and psychoanalytic approaches has weakened, as film scholars have turned their attention to other sources such as cognitive theory and analytic philosophy, and as philosophers have taken a more focused interest in film. This volume provides further momentum to these developments. It is comprised of new essays on a wide range of topics by both film scholars and philosophers who share the commitment to conceptual investigation, logical consistency, and clarity of argument that characterizes analytic philosophy. The first section addresses the nature of cinematic representation, while the second section re-examines notions of authorship and intentionality in our understanding and appreciation of films. Sections 3 and 4 look at ideology and aesthetics respectively, while the final section considers the nature and place of emotion in film spectatorship. The diversity of the questions addressed here (aesthetics and politics in black film theory, film music, authorship, genre, comedy, epistemology, feminism, and film theory) is matched by the range of positions argued for and demonstrates a vital plurality of perspectives rather than a single line of thought.

Download or read book Khalar's Dash written by Richard Khalar and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-18 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of Rick's twelve uncles fought in World War II. They left no history of their experiences. So much family history lost, how sad. The purpose of this book is to pass his military and life experiences to family. Rick served over 30 years in the Air Force, moved the household more than 14 times, travelled to 32 countries, and bombed three. He flew 78 B52 combat sorties in SEA dropping just under 5,000 bombs. His experiences reflect what all B52 crewmembers experienced. Lightning hit his B52 four times, he landed a B52 that was on fire. Eighteen fellow squadron crewmembers died in his first squadron. Additionally, Rick has had some unique experiences. He rode in the cockpit of an Egyptian airliner from Cairo to Luxor. He sailed on the fast attack submarine "Los Angeles" and spent time on the aircraft carrier "Carl Vincent." He spent a year as an Unarmed Military Observer in the UN Truce Supervision Organization. In Lebanon, he was chased by armed PLO. He saw .50 caliber machine guns, mortars, and artillery fired with intent to kill. When the North Korean guards were not looking, he stepped across into the North Korean side of the DMZ. Rick oversaw 19 B52s, 16 KC135s, and 380 personnel.Rick rode camels in Egypt and Israel, and elephants in Thailand. The fences in Darwin kept alligators out of town. Rick commanded a 4-week AFROTC Field Training camp with 520 cadets. Finally, he then spent 14 years as the University of Texas System Chief Pilot. If you are interested in factual adventure and the military, this book is a must read.
