Book excerpt: This Fifteenth Symposium of the Society for the Study of Development and Growth is divided into three parts. In the first group of chapters T. T. Puck discusses the methods of deriving cultures from single animal cells; R. Dulbecco, problems of virus reproduction; and R. M. Klein, the current status of cultivating plant tissues. D. M. Prescott then examines the rhythmic growth and division of Amoebae; C. S. Pittendrigh and V. G. Bruce contribute a review of their analysis of internal clocks in animals; and E. Bunning writes on diurnal rhythms in vascular plants. Finally H. Gaffron and B. L. Strehler discuss the origin, significance and mechanics of photosynthesis while H. F. Blum and H. Shapley take up other aspects of biochemical evolution. Originally published in 1957. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Synopsis Behavior of the Fetus by : Scott R. Robinson
Download or read book Behavior of the Fetus written by Scott R. Robinson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-08-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This decade has seen a resurgence of interest in the prenatal development of behavior in animals, in part due to new technology which permits noninvasive, indirect monitoring of fetal activity and in part due to improved surgical procedures and other techniques that permit direct monitoring. All of these new techniques and methods are replacing the speculation of the past with empirical data about prenatal behavior. This volume provides a summary of the current state of thought. Historically, researchers have approached the subject from many different fields: child development, pediatric medicine, obstetrics, behavioral embryology, neurobiology, and psychobiology. This present volume attempts to unite these diverse interests by providing a concise introduction to the major conceptual issues, theoretical questions and empirically derived speculation as framed by leading scholars in the field of prenatal behavioral research. Researchers in fetal physiology and behavior, neonatal physiology and behavior, obstetrics, pediatrics, child development, and behavioral development will find this book useful in their own specific areas of concentration.

This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cockroaches offer a useful and inexpensive alternative to traditional laboratory animals, yet most researchers are unfamiliar with their biology. This unique and comprehensive cockroach handbook is written for everyone from novice to expert. It addresses every aspect of cockroach biology, with a particular emphasis on the neuroendocrine system. Liberally illustrated chapters include such topics as cockroach culture, anatomy, behavior, and various experimental techniques. One of the few available books to provide broad coverage of the neurobiology of a single organism, this second volume is a must for all researchers in biomedical or veterinary fields, as well as for entomologists.
Book Synopsis The Geometry of Biological Time by : Arthur T. Winfree
Download or read book The Geometry of Biological Time written by Arthur T. Winfree and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dealing with dynamics of processes that repeat themselves regularly, this revised and updated edition extends the thread from 1980 to the present day, concentrating on areas of interest where there will be much activity in the future. This involves going through spatial biochemical, electrophysiological, and organismic dynamical systems and patterns that were discovered by pursuing the theme of phase singularities introduced in the original book. In particular the work on excitability in cell membranes will be thoroughly updated as will the references throughout the book.

Book Synopsis Processing of Environmental Information in Vertebrates by : Milton H. Stetson
Download or read book Processing of Environmental Information in Vertebrates written by Milton H. Stetson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In just one concise and lucidly written volume a multitude of topics is covered introducing the results of extensive research on the processing of environmental information in vertebrates. Practical examples are provided to illustrate points made in the text. Many factors, both from the external environment and from within the animals own cells or tissue makeup can directly serve as a pressure to elicit physiological and/or behavioral responses in the organisms studied. Light intensity, photoperiod, circadian rhythms, seasonal variation and daylenght, just to name a few, are among the environmental factors that are correlated in these studies to behavioral or hormonal changes, organ function, and reproduction. This work will serve as a guidebook and easy reference source for students and research professionals in physiology, endocrinology, comparative zoology, and veterinary science.

Book Synopsis The Physiological Clock by : Erwin Bünning
Download or read book The Physiological Clock written by Erwin Bünning and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a translation of the second Gennan edition (1963). In a few places modifications have been made to take into account important works that have since appeared. The aim has not been an all-embracing survey of experimental facts on the subject, but rather to emphasize the physiological kinship of phenomena having a wide variety of names, and to show thereby the great extent to which the physio logical clock influences quite different phenomena in the "behaviour" of uni cellular organisms, of higher plants, of animals, and of human beings. Furthennore, an attempt has been made to make as thorough an analysis of the mechanism of the clock as is possible at the present time. The first draft of the translation was made by Dr. LARS LORCHER (now of the of Radiation and Organisms, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D. C.). Division The whole script was then thoroughly revised and corrected by Prof. Dr. FRANK SALISBURY (Department of Botany, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado). Finally, I made amendments and additions to the presentation, as they seemed to me to be necessary, in order to keep abreast of recent developments. Mr. DEREK MCCULLOCH (at present Lecturer in English Language in the Uni versity of Tiibingen) then checked the manuscript. I should like to thank all those involved in the translation for their efforts.
